Environmental Landscaping
Environmental landscape design involves selecting slow-growing, drought-tolerant plants that require less water and maintenance, significantly reducing water consumption. Native California plants and well-adapted non-native plants can be combined in wildlife-friendly and visually attractive landscapes suited to difficult urban conditions. Lawns require more water than other plants during dry periods and their use should be minimized. Currently the City of Santa Monica restricts lawn areas to a maximum of 20% of the landscaped area, but lower percentages are desirable. Drought-tolerant groundcovers should be considered as an alternative to lawn. The following principles guide environmental landscape design. 2. Test soils to determine their nutrient content, organic matter, and necessary soil amendments. Soils in urban environments commonly suffer from excessive compaction and depleted organic matter. To promote healthy plant growth, continuously mulch and compost whenever possible. When planting in paved areas, provide a continuous soil trench with a minimum cross-sectional area of 3 sq. yd. to ensure an adequate volume of rooting medium. 3. A variety of drought-tolerant native and non-native trees, shrubs, groundcovers and perennials grow in the Santa Monica region. In most cases they can replace non-native ornamental plants to achieve the same objectives of color, texture, shade and seasonal interest. They have the added benefit of providing fruit and seeds for wildlife.

Windbreaks for Winter Savings
In a windy site, a windbreak or shelterbelt planting can account for up to 50 percent wind reduction with a 20 to 40 percent reduction in heating fuel consumption. In a calmer spot, wind barriers can still reduce fuel use by 10 percent or more. A wind barrier that permits 50 to 60 percent wind penetration is more effective than a solid barrier because it provides a larger area of protection on the leeward side. Evergreen conifers (needle-leaf trees) are a perfect barrier to winter winds. Location.

Brick Patio and Landscaping News for Appleton, Neenah and the rest of Wisconsin's Fox Valley
Landscape Design for the Everyday to the Unusual
Jeff Pozniak discusses a project with an Appleton client in this photo, taken from a recent article profiling our company. The article appeared in the April issue of Pro Magazine, a nationally circulated landscape industry magazine.
Whether you're looking for something that will spark your imagination, or provide sanctuary from the everyday, Stonehenge has the knowledge, experience and equipment to design and install a landscape that you'll love.
Brick Paver Patios
From Appleton down to Neenah and everywhere in between, using concrete pavers, clay pavers, even flagstone and bluestone, we're building brick paver patios. We've built patios as far north as Pickerel and Crandon, and as far south as Slinger. With nearly 20 years of experience, covering brands such as Unilock, Decra-Lok, Pine Hall, Glen-Gery, County Pavers, Belgard, Belden and more, there isn't a brick patio project we can't build for you. To read more about our brick paver work and view our portfolio, click the 'Pavers' button.
Retaining Walls
Landscape Bed Plantings
Taking your property from bare soil to green and lush, we'd love the opportunity to design and install a full planting plan for you. We prefer to use large caliper trees and larger, more mature shrubs for the landscapes we install, because we'd prefer that you enjoy a full landscape today, not five years from today. We will properly 'face' and plant your trees, shrubs and perennials, and if you'd like to call us back to prune your plantings to maintain their health, we'd be happy to. Click the 'Plantings' button to read more.

  • Education Resources Across North America, more and more people are discovering the satisfaction of landscaping their homes, schools, businesses and places of worship with native plants.
    What Are Native Plants
Native plants are those that evolved naturally in North America. More specifically, native plants in a particular area are those that were growing naturally in the area before humans introduced plants from distant places. In eastern and central North America, native plants typically grew in communities with species adapted to similar soil, moisture, and weather conditions. Some of the widespread communities included oak-hickory-chestnut and beech-maple forests, tallgrass and shortgrass prairies, and freshwater marshes. Additional communities occupied specialized niches, including savannahs, fens, bogs, flood plains and alpine areas.
    Why Landscape with Native Plants
Landscaping with native plants has several appealing factors.

Quigley , Department of Horticulture and Crop Science, The Ohio State University Edible landscaping offers an alternative to conventional residential landscapes that are designed solely for ornamental purposes. Edible landscapes can be just as attractive, yet produce fruits and vegetables for home use. One can install an entirely edible landscape, or incorporate simple elements into existing yards and gardens.
What is edible landscaping?
Figure 1 Edible landscaping is the use of food-producing plants in the constructed landscape, principally the residential landscape. Edible landscapes combine fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, vegetables, herbs, edible flowers and ornamental plants into aesthetically pleasing designs. These designs can incorporate any garden style and can include anywhere from 1-100% edible species (Figure 1).
