A well-designed landscape is a pleasure to the family, enhances a community and adds to the property's resale value. Landscape design involves much more than placing trees, shrubs and other plants on the property. It is an art which deals with conscious arrangement or organization of outdoor space for human satisfaction and enjoyment. Some of its major goals include:
    • Organizing and developing the site for maximum use and pleasure.
    • Creating a visual relationship between the house and the site.
    • Reducing landscape maintenance to a practical level.
Americans spend tremendous amounts of money "landscaping" their businesses, homes, streets, parks, schools, etc. Much of this money is wasted, however, because of little or no planning. People cannot understand how to landscape until they know why they landscape. There are several reasons why people "landscape": some think it improves the appearance of their place; others like to grow plants; still others just want their place to look pretty. Too often these landscapes dominate rather than serve. Masses of plants or other materials in the landscape may take up a large portion of the space and leave little room for people. Then how does the designer arrange space so that people will find it useful, beautiful, meaningful and functional? His methods include:

Texas Agricultural Extension Service Although it is not possible to control temperature, wind and other weather elements, certain landscape practices can modify the climate in and around homes significantly. By placing trees, shrubs, vines and landscape structures properly, the homeowner can reduce the energy required to keep homes and surrounding areas comfortable during winter and summer. If the landscaping is well done, one receives the added benefits of beauty and increased real estate values. A well planned landscape is one of the best investments a homeowner can make. Protection From the Sun Trees. Trees can reduce summer temperatures significantly. Shading the roof of a house from the afternoon sun by large trees can reduce temperatures inside the home by as much as 8 to 10 degrees F. Deciduous trees (those that lose their leaves in winter) provide summer shade, then drop their leaves in the fall, which allows the warmth of the sun to filter through their bare branches in winter and help warm the home. If a home can be situated to take advantage of shade from existing trees on south and west exposures, energy expended to cool the house can be reduced considerable. To shade the roof or a wall of a one-story home, trees which will reach a medium to large size should be selected and placed 15 to 20 feet from the side or 12 to 15 feet from the corner of the structure. To be most effective, the canopy of the tree should extend over the roof. Smaller trees such as crape myrtles and redbuds can be planted closer to the house and used for shading walls and window areas. Since they are deciduous, they will provide shade during the summer and allow light and sun to penetrate during the winter season.

    DEFINITION:
"Energy conserving landscapes" reduce energy costs in a home during summer and winter. Ideally, the energy conserving landscape is also a water conserving landscape.
    CONSIDERATIONS:
It is possible to achieve as much as a 30% reduction in cooling and heating costs through careful landscape planning. Landscaping can reduce direct sun from striking and heating up building surfaces. It can prevent reflected light carrying heat into a house from the ground or other surfaces. By reducing wind velocity, an energy conserving landscape slows air leakage in a house. Additionally, the shade created by trees and the effect of grass and shrubs will reduce air temperatures adjoining the house and provide evaporative cooling. The use of dense tree and shrub plantings on the west and northwest sides of a home will block the summer setting sun. This is the most effective landscape planting strategy. Additional considerations include the use of deciduous trees on the south side of the house that will admit summer sun; evergreen plantings on the north side will slow cold winter winds; constructing a natural planted channel to funnel summer cooling breezes into the house.

    Fire-Resistant Landscaping
    by F.C. Dennis
    Quick Facts...
    • More people are moving into Colorado's rural areas, increasing the chances of wildfire.
    • "Defensible space" is the primary determinant of a structure's ability to survive wildfire.
    • Native species are generally the best plant materials for landscaping in defensible space, but others can be grown successfully in Colorado.
    • To be a FireWise homeowner, plan well, plant well and maintain well.
Colorado's population is growing, its urban areas are rapidly expanding, and people are building more homes in what was once natural forest and brushlands. Newcomers to rural areas need to know how to correctly landscape their property to reduce wildfire hazards. Improper landscaping worries land managers and fire officials because it can greatly increase the risk of structure and property damage from wildfire. It is a question of when, not if, a wildfire will strike any particular area. Vegetative clearance around the house (defensible space) is a primary determinant of a home's ability to survive wildfire. Defensible space is, simply, room for firefighters to do their job. If grasses, brush, trees and other common forest fuels are removed, reduced, or modified to lessen a fire's intensity and keep it away from the home, chances increase that the structure will survive. It is a little-known fact that in the absence of a defensible space, firefighters will often bypass a house, choosing to make their stand at a home where their safety is more assured and the chance to successfully protect the structure is greater.

    Xeriscaping: Creative Landscaping
    by J.R. Feucht
    Quick Facts...
    • Proper planning is the first step in landscaping to reduce water use.
    • Steep slopes with south and west exposures require more frequent water to maintain the same plant cover as east or north slopes.
    • Terracing slopes reduces runoff.
    • Limit irrigated bluegrass turf to small or heavily used areas.
    • Soil preparation is a key to water conservation.
    • Proper irrigation practices and system design can lead to 30 to 80 percent water savings.
    • Mulches help reduce water needs and control weeds.
Xeriscaping (zer-i-skaping) is a word originally coined by a special task force of the Denver Water Department, Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado and Colorado State University to describe landscaping with water conservation as a major objective. The derivation of the word is from the Greek "xeros," meaning dry, and landscaping thus, xeriscaping. The need for landscaping to conserve water received new impetus following the drought of 1977 throughout the western states and the recognition that nearly 50 percent of the water used by the average household is for turfgrass and landscape plantings. Unfortunately, many homeowners have cut back on turfgrass areas by substituting vast "seas of gravel and plastic" as their answer to water conservation. This practice is not only self-defeating as far as water conservation is concerned, it also produces damaging effects to trees and shrubs. It is not xeriscaping.

A rchitects and Interior Designers are constantly challenged with demands for something new and different for flooring inside malls, showrooms and public areas of buildings that will satisfy a wide variety of criteria. The flooring material must have a different but pleasing texture or it must create an outdoor feeling inside or it must be as easily maintained as extant flooring but cost less or . . . the criteria are unlimited depending on the imagination of the designer.
I nterlocking Paving Stone Systems have fully demonstrated their diversity in a number of interior applications. In every case a different but pleasing texture was created that is easily maintained and costs the same or less than conventional techniques.
S ince its introduction in 1993, Brussels Block, has evolved into a dynamic but simple paver system. With the addition of the Half Stone and the Quarter Stone, it gives the designer a greater range of design while maintaining that ever important classic natural stone appearance. With its antiqued appearance, accented by the three unique Brussels Block stories, that true old cobblestone look creates the most exquisite stone terrace, courtyard, or winding pathway offering an attractive transition from house to garden. Brussels Block is the perfect choice.
R etaining walls built with Pisa Stone lean at the proper angle to assure stability. This slope (set-back) is formed automatically by the patented off-set interlock. Vertical free standing walls are built by reversing every other course of Pisa Stone, thus eliminating the lean (set back).

We pay orthodontists an average of $350,000, and no one would say that their impact on the lives of kids is greater than a teacher's. But it seems difficult for everyone, from parents to politicians, to shake free of a tradition in which teaching was seen as something of a volunteer project for women whose husbands brought home the real money. Today's teachers need to, but very often can't, support a family on their salaries. They find it difficult or impossible to buy homes, to save money, to live comfortably, and, in wealthier areas, to live in or near the towns where they teach.
