Olympic and Mt. Rainier National Parks (July 2005)
A quick jaunt up North to discover some of the most beautiful national parks in the country. Mountain vistas, misty seascapes, creeks and waterfalls, critters of all sorts, and entire hillsides covered in wildflowers! What's not to like? (70 images) Eastern Sierras Autumn (October 2004)
Several days spent roaming around the Eastern Sierras taking photos of some amazing stuff. Pictures from Mono Lake, the ghost town of Bodie, Devils Postpile, Mt. Whitney, the Alabama Hills, not to mention lots and lots of amazing fall color. (75 images) Hawaii: The Big Island (August 2004)
Travelbug photographer goes on vacation. Massive stints of laziness punctuated by occasional photographic binges results in images of palm trees, sunsets, windmills, the southern-most point in the U.S., black sand beaches, clear blue waters, volcanic craters, petroglyphs, waterfalls, lotsa flowers, lava! and the moon reflected on the Pacific. (39 images) Death Valley (March 2004)
Alien. Bizzarre. Unreal. After spending a week visiting locations like Titus Canyon, Zabriskie Point, The Mesquite Flats San Dunes, Ubehebe Crater, Teakettle Junction, The Racetrack, the salt flats, Mosaic Canyon, the Devil's Golfcourse and Artists' Palette, one is definitely left reaching for the thesaurus to look up synonyms for "weird."

Most photographers are familiar with the work of the late Ansel Adams. This photographer/ artist/author/teacher was renowned for his magnificent black and white landscape pictures of the American southwest. Most would go so far as to say that Ansel Adams is the most recognizable name in professional photography. The set of pictures above illustrates how different a scene looks at different times of day. The picture with the mist on the lake was taken in the early morning. The other photograph was taken in the late afternoon. When you are on location, shoot at different times of day for different effects.
The Camera.
You also want a camera with at least a 6mm (28mm on a 35mm camera) lens. The 4800 features a 6x zoom lens (3x optical, 2x digital) and a 6-18mm lens (28-84mm equivalent on a 35mm camera). For the accompanying pictures, I used the 6mm setting.

posted September 02, 2005
While the airwaves are overflowing with very specific information from urban areas hit by Katrina, verifiable information from more rural areas is still sketchy.
Louisiana : Allen Ownings, the Louisiana state association executive reports that nurseries north northwest of New Orleans suffered minor damage, but those in St Tammany Parish (Covington) were much harder hit. There is also a nursery production area south of New Orleans that is under water.
Mississippi : Communications are still difficult in that state and ANLA has received no specific, confirmable information at this time. The lack of fuel in that state is a major factor in rural areas. No fuel, no generators. Additional generators needed have to come in on trucks that need fuel to get out.
Alabama : Primary problems are the result of the storm surge that hit Mobile Bay. Low-lying nurseries close to Bay experienced flooding by salt water. Ultimate damage to plants will depend on the ability to clean the salt out. Reports of some damage in the Semmes area, but nothing specific yet.

Planning the Home Landscape William C. Welch
Extension Landscape Horticulturist
A well-designed landscape is a pleasure to the family, enhances a community and adds to the property's resale value. Landscape design involves much more than placing trees, shrubs and other plants on the property. It is an art which deals with conscious arrangement or organization of outdoor space for human satisfaction and enjoyment. Some of its major goals include:
  • Organizing and developing the site for maximum use and pleasure.
  • Creating a visual relationship between the house and the site.
  • Reducing landscape maintenance to a practical level.
Americans spend tremendous amounts of money "landscaping" their businesses, homes, streets, parks, schools, etc. Much of this money is wasted, however, because of little or no planning. People cannot understand how to landscape until they know why they landscape. There are several reasons why people "landscape": some think it improves the appearance of their place; others like to grow plants; still others just want their place to look pretty. Too often these landscapes dominate rather than serve. Masses of plants or other materials in the landscape may take up a large portion of the space and leave little room for people. Then how does the designer arrange space so that people will find it useful, beautiful, meaningful and functional? His methods include:

RESEARCH Research areas at LEML include: Landscape Ecology Urban Ecology Ecological Modeling , and Sustainability Science
Our current research projects focus on: interactions between landscape pattern and population/ecosystem processes, pattern and process in urban landscapes and their ecological consequences, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, and integrating ecological, economic, and societal processes to create and maintain sustainable landscapes. Our research has involved a variety of ecosystems, including deserts, grasslands and forests in North America and Asia. While the geographic idiosyncracy of ecology must be recognized, it is the research questions that drive our studies. Our research approaches combine theoretical and empirical methods, with an emphasis on systems analysis, spatial modeling, spatial statistics, GIS, and remote sensing.

Whole Document Navigator (Click Here) Top of Document ELEMENTS OF ART PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN STEPS IN DEVELOPING A LANDSCAPE DESIGN -Steps In Design Develop a Plot Plan Conduct a Site Analysis Assess Family Needs Locate Activity Areas Design Activity Areas Plant Selection and Placement Footnotes
Basic Principles of Landscape Design
Dewayne L. Ingram Landscaping combines elements of art and science to create a functional, aesthetically pleasing extension of indoor living to the outdoors. One initial purpose of landscape design is to blend man's technology (house or building) into the natural surroundings. To work toward a desirable landscape design, the landscape horticulturist must have a working knowledge of art elements and design principles. This publication is intended for the commercial landscaper with little or no training in the use of these basic principles. This publication is not a complete landscape design text.
ELEMENTS OF ART
Elements of art include but are not limited to color, line, form, texture and scale. These elements are never independent of each other, but we will discuss their individual natures before considering the interactions. Color variation can best be explained by use of a color wheel ( Figure 1 ). Primary colors are red, blue and yellow. Orange, green and violet are called secondary colors because they are combinations of two primary colors. For example, yellow and red are combined to yield orange. Tertiary colors are the fusion of one primary and one secondary color. These colors would be between primary and secondary colors.
