The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) is a huge aquatic playground where you'll find everything from dedicated birdwatchers and anglers in highly specialized shallow-water skiffs to people on speeding sailboards and personal watercraft. With so many activities going on at once, we all need to pay attention to what others are doing. Fishing Fishing is one of Florida's top three outdoor recreational activities. Almost half the people recently surveyed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Sea Grant College rate saltwater fishing as "their most important activity." A slightly higher number, 57 percent, considered saltwater fishing one of life's main sources of satisfaction. Unfortunately, continued loss of sea grasses, as well as increased angling pressure along the IRL, have impacted the fish population drastically. Not long ago, the IRL was perhaps the best place in the entire country to take big spotted seatrout, the so-called "gator" trout that weighed 10 pounds or more. Due to the steady loss of grass flats, gator trout are rare these days.

http://library.davidson.edu/archives/ency/lakes.asp
Lake Campus and Lake Wiley For more than a hundred years, water activities have been an important aspect of Davidson College. This important aspect of college life has focused around two lakes: Lake Norman and the lesser known Lake Wiley. The former has presently been affiliated with Davidson College for exactly forty years and has been used as a social outlet for the student body as well as the greater community. Lake Norman has also provided the student body with numerous opportunities to get involved in the Davidson community through club and intramural sports. Before Lake Norman, however, it was Lake Wiley that gave Davidson students a unique aquatic experience. Built enthusiastically, for the most part, by the students themselves, this venue was a year-round haven for bonding, relaxation, and fun.
Starting out as strictly a swimming area, it quickly grew to encompass canoeing, sailing, water skiing, and other types of boating endeavors (Lake Campus Regulations and Information). A storage facility, a bath house, a shelter, and even a clubhouse were planned for construction to support athletics (R.A. Currie: Memorandum to Dr. Martin). However, the administration also planned to emphasize the intellectual. President Martin envisioned the Lake Campus to be an extension of the educational program and the liberal arts (Sailstad: Lake Norman Recreational Area). The Lake Campus was quickly a huge success, and as a result, administrators realized that there were things that needed to be attended to. The Lake Campus had a lack of resources, in addition to being understaffed. Picnic grills and tables, in addition to shelters, outdoor lighting, and greater safety measures, such as signs directing boating, parking traffic, and swimmers, were needed (Tom Scott: Memorandum to Bob Currie; Sailstad: Lake Campus).

72. Landsailing In America
As time went on other activities limited the landsailing area to only one single strip. Provides racing and recreational activities in the Reno Area.
http://www.nalsa.org/landsailing_in_america.htm
Excerpted by permission of the author from the May 12 1998 issue of the
AMERICAN LANDSAILING FEDERATION newsletter.
Landsailing in America By Nord Embroden I remember a non-successful attempt at landsailing in 1956 with a bed sheet for a square sail and a push car. A puff of wind came and my whole rig went over the front. 1958 I installed a dingy sail on a Soap Box Derby car. This car would sail with two kids at dangerous boardwalk speeds. I remember that the torque of the mast would lock up the steering bar during gusts adding more excitement. Nord and his friends were the terrors of the peninsula in Long Beach.
My father taught rendering and structure classes at the Art Center School in Pasadena. Don Rypinski was a student of my dads
and was experimenting with landyacht design. Don and I became friends and worked on many landsailing projects together. Over the years Don designed several beautiful yachts that were very unique. A very early yacht was constructed of tubing and cloth. The yacht could be folded in to a small package and placed in the trunk of the car. His Windbuggy competition was a lightweight space frame of tubing with and extruded aluminum mast and sulky spoked wheels. Later Don designed and built several Windbuggy Juniors, the first yachts designed specifically for children.
Scorpion was a later and almost identical copy of the Chubasco. Scorpion tried to break into the market at a less expensive price but was already working with an outdated design.

Charles River Reservation Boston, Cambridge The Charles River Reservation is 17 miles of linear park with endless recreational opportunities. Whether your interest is canoeing or ice skating, baseball or in-line skating, the Charles River is a beautiful resource. Since 1893, the Metropolitan District Commission has preserved the region's unique landscapes by acquiring and protecting park lands, river corridors and coastal areas; reclaiming and restoring abused and neglected sites, and setting aside areas of great scenic beauty for the recreation and health of the region's residents. Click here to see more information about specific activities within the Reservation. Charles River Dam
The Charles River Dam, located behind the Fleet Center, controls the water level in the river basin. An earlier dam, located beneath the Museum of Science , was completed in 1910 with the purpose of creating a fresh water river basin and river front park in Boston. The newly landscaped banks of the river became known as the Charles River Esplanade. The later dam, completed in 1978, houses six pumps that provide flood control protection. The dam's lock system permits travel of recreational craft from the river to the harbor year round. A fish ladder allows for passage of anadromous fish (alewife herring, rainbow smelt and shad) during the migration season in late spring. Regularly scheduled tours are available. Call 617-727-1188 x445 for information.

2.8.1 Background

The estuary supports a range of recreational activities, both on the water and on the adjacent land, including: yachting, cruising, dinghy sailing, canoeing, rowing, windsurfing, angling, walking, cycling and bird watching. It is the only one of the four estuaries on the Isle of Wight which is accessible to the public along most of the shoreline and intertidal areas. It is used by individuals, clubs, training centres and for organised events and regattas. In 1996, approximately 250 water based and 15 land based recreation events were organised. Recreation facilities on the estuary include sailing and rowing clubs, training centres, slipways and landing facilities, marinas, moorings, public footpaths and a cyclepath. Maps 7 and 8 illustrate the location of recreational provision and public access within the estuary.
Angling:
Watching birds and other wildlife:
Watching birds and other wildlife is very popular along the shores of the estuary. It occurs most extensively in areas adjacent to Dodnor Creek, Kingston mudflats, Folly Lake, Pinkmead Creek and the mudflats adjacent to the Medina Valley Centre. The estuary is also used as a field study site for courses provided by the Medina Valley Centre.
