161. Bicycling In Central Asia
Bob describes a tour from Panfilov (Kazakhstan) to Bishkek, (kyrgyzstan) as well as another tour from Tashkent (Uzbekistan) to Bishekek.
http://www.hullsgrove.com/
Bicycle Touring in Central Asia by Bob Egan, 1995 and 1997 I n June of 1997 I bicycled from Panfilov, Kazakhstan to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan with a friend, Dave Clopton. This was my second trip to Central Asia. The first was in 1995 with another friend, Kath Giel, and was also done independently on bicycles. The 1995 route was from Tashkent to Bishkek, and a chronicle of that trip is also here , following the description of the 1997 trip. Also here , after everything, are a few incomplete and purely miscellaneous tips on travel in the region. In addition to the two trips to Central Asia, I've completed a 1993 too-early spring tour across Ukraine, and ridden across Europe and North America in the 80's. I haven't written anything up about these trips, but if you have any questions about them, or bicycle touring in general, you may email me at bobegan@qwest.net Second Visit, JUNE 1997: Panfilov to Bishkek It's back to Central Asia for another bicycle tour. This time the route was east to west, from the Kazak-China border to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Planning for the trip was done with some trepidation. Those who are familiar with my first trip, from Tashkent to Bishkek will recall that we met with some difficulties in the Tashkent subway (detained by the cops for taking photos) and then again in the fields of Kyrgyzstan (nearly robbed by thugs and a bout of intense food poisoning, all in one night). This trip, as it turned out, was different in many ways. The scenery was better and logistics were well-executed; but on the other hand we spent more money and saw fewer cultural sites. Like the last trip, the adventure started with getting visas, so let's start the story there . . .

or in this case a turn of the crank... For optimised viewing we recommend: Screen resolution of 800 x 600 (or greater)
Pedalling out across the lonely steppe of Eastern Turkey, our journey unfolded along the busy Caspian shores of Iran and into the Karakum furnace, Turkmenistan's Desert of the Black Sands. Via the outdoor museums of Uzbek Silk Road cities, a string of jam-packed bazaars, an abundance of yurts and five thousand kilometres later, we arrived at our eventual destination: Son Kol lake, home to the nomadic horsemen of the Tien Shan mountains in Kyrgyzstan. We've tried to make it more than just a tale of shashlyk kebabs and vodka. As well as posting diaries of our thoughts, eclectic images and a snippet of cultural background, we've noted practical resources for the more pedal-driven reader. This includes maps, stats, visa help, treadly shops and in true cycle-tourer style, a particularly beady eye was cast over the region's culinary offerings. Loaded with challenges, encounters and hospitality, we can't claim that travelling by tandem was always easy. But tough times or not, it was certainly an experience that left an incredible impression of this fascinating land.

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan (CNN) An employee of the Chinese Embassy in Kyrgyzstan has been killed in an armed assault, the Russian news agency Interfax reported. Two unidentified gunmen with pistols shot and killed the embassy employee Saturday night, Kyrgyz Interior Ministry sources told Interfax. Preliminary reports indicate that the victim served in the post of consul in the former Soviet republic in central Asia. The gunmen attacked the diplomat as he sat in his Mercedes-Benz, killing him, the driver and another Chinese citizen, the sources said. The attackers then fled in another car. Sources said they believe the killing was politically motivated. RELATED SITES: See related sites about World WORLD TOP STORIES: Blix: 'Iraq could do more' N. Korea warns of nuclear conflict
