Voters in Kyrgyzstan have elected a new president. Former protest leader Kumanbek Bakiyev won with nearly ninety percent of the vote. President-elect Bakiyev will succeed Askar Akayev, the autocratic president who fled Kyrgyzstan after flawed parliamentary elections sparked violent protests in the capital, Bishkek, three months ago. The Kyrgyz elections were closely monitored by observers from more than one-hundred countries. Ambassador Lubomir Kopaj of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said the election indicates progress toward democracy: "There were almost no discernible obstacles to campaigning, except the available financial resources of candidates themselves. Freedom of assembly and freedom of expression were respected throughout the election process. [Abuse of] administrative resources to favor the incumbent was largely absent, or unsolicited, after strong warnings were announced [by politicians and the interim administration.]"

Early History
Very little is known about the Jewish presence in the Kyrgyz territory before the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. Jews began to settle along the Great Silk Road starting in the 4th century C.E. They were traders who dealt in Aramaic . Archeological evidence shows that at the end of the 6th century C.E., Jewish traders from Khazaria traveled through the region. Bukharan Jews populated the Turkistan region, which encompassed the territory that is modern-day Kyrgyzstan. Their history stretches over 2,000 years in Uzbekistan Tajikistan , and Kyrgyzstan. In the mid 19th century, they took on Sephardic traditions.
Under the Russians
In the mid-19th century, Russia absorbed the region into its vast empire. Ashkenazi Jews settled in the provincial cities of Kyrgyzstan, particularly in Karakol, Bishkek, and Osh. In 1885, only one Jew lived in Karakol, by 1900, there were fifteen and, by 1910 thirty-one resided in the city.

According to recent findings of Kyrgyz and Chinese historians, Kyrgyz history dates back to 201 B.C. The earliest descendents of the Kyrgyz people, who are believed to be of Turkic descent, lived in the northeastern part of what is currently Mongolia. Later, some of their tribes migrated to the region that is currently southern Siberia and settled along the Yenisey River, where they lived from the 6th until the 8th centuries. They spread across what is now the Tuva region of the Russian Federation, remaining in that area until the rise of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, when the Kyrgyz began migrating south. In the 12th century, Islam became the predominant religion in the region. Most Kyrgyz are Sunni Muslims of the Hanafi school. During the 15th-16th centuries, the Kyrgyz people settled in the territory currently known as the Kyrgyz Republic. In the early 19th century, the southern territory of the Kyrgyz Republic came under the control of the Khanate of Kokand, and the territory was formally incorporated into the Russian Empire in 1876. The Russian takeover instigated numerous revolts against tsarist authority, and many Kyrgyz opted to move into the Pamir mountains or to Afghanistan. The suppression of the 1916 rebellion in Central Asia caused many Kyrgyz to migrate to China. Soviet power was initially established in the region in 1918, and in 1924, the Kara-Kyrgyz Autonomous Oblast was created within the Russian Federal Socialist Republic. (The term Kara-Kyrgyz was used until the mid-1920s by the Russians to distinguish them from the Kazakhs, who were also referred to as Kyrgyz.) In 1926, it became the Kyrgyz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. On December 5, 1936, the Kyrgyz Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) was established as a full Union Republic of the U.S.S.R.

Triumphant Kyrgyz opposition leaders come to power
The new Kyrgyz government will have to do its best not to let the new era of Kyrgyzstan's history become associated with looting Little was known about leaders of the Kyrgyz opposition until massive actions of protest swept across the country. One has to acknowledge that the world was not interested in parliamentary elections in the small Asian country, even if they could provoke a political crisis there. Kyrgyz oppositionists had very few hopes to win the elections: they said that 30 percent of seats in the parliament would be a great accomplishment for them. However, the regime of the Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev proved to be a lot weaker than his rivals could thinks. Rosa Otunbayeva, the leader of the Ata-Zhurt bloc, is known in Kyrgyzstan as the locomotive of the opposition. Otunbayeva said that it was President Akayev, who gave such a description to her. Rosa Otunbayeva is a professional diplomat. She graduated from the Department of Philosophy of the Moscow State University in 1972 and finished post-graduate course there as well. After that she spent about 15 years taking various party positions. She worked in the executive authorities system in Kyrgyzstan and eventually became deputy chairwoman of the republic's Council of Ministers. Otunbayeva chaired the Kyrgyz Foreign Affairs Ministry; she was the ambassador of Kyrgyzstan to the USA, Canada and Great Britain. She worked in the UN system and took the position of the deputy special envoy of the UN Secretary General to regulate the conflict between Georgia and Abkhazia.

There's speculation in Kyrgyzstan that Canadian company, Cameco's huge Kumtor gold mine may now face criminal charges, after an investgation by the new government. On July 18th five villages, downstream of the mine, rallied to demand full damage compensation from the company, with a threat of civil disobedience if no satisfactory answer were forthcoming Cameco unit mines for goodwill in Kyrgyzstan By Graeme Smith, Toronto Globe and Mail July 15, 2005 When the riots were finished, after the looting had stopped, the new leader of Kyrgyzstan held a private meeting with the country's biggest foreign investor. Acting Kyrgyzstani President Kurmanbek Bakiev wanted to send a message to the Canadians: Clean up your image. It wasn't the kind of thing that Andy Lewis, president of Kumtor Operating Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Saskatoon-based Cameco Corp., was used to hearing from the government of this tiny, mountainous country in the middle of Asia. "He said to us, 'We think it would help your cause if you'd explain yourself,' " Mr. Lewis said. Such a request would have been unheard of during the rule of former president Askar Akayev, an old Soviet administrator who was exiled to Russia during the so-called Tulip Revolution in March.

The area is conquered by the Mongols in the thirtheenth century. During the 15th-16th centuries, the Kyrgyz settle in present-day Kyrgyzstan. The area becomes part of Dzungaria in 1626. The southern part of the area comes in the early 19th century under the control of the Khanate of Kokand , and the territory was formally incorporated into Russia in 1876. Between 1862 and 1885 Kokand is destroyed by the Russians. Soviet power is established in the region in 1918. In 1924 the Kara-Kyrgyz Autonomous Oblast is created within Russia, reorganized into the Kyrgyz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1926. In 1936 the Kyrgyz Soviet Socialist Republic is established as a full Union Republic of the USSR. The early 1990s bring change to the Kyrgyz SSR. The Kyrgyzstan Democratic Movement (KDM) develops into a significant political force with support in parliament. In 1990 Askar Akajev is elected to the presidency, bringing younger, reform-oriented politicians into power. In 1990 the supreme soviet votes to change the name to the Republic of Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan Plants and Animal Back to Top Forests occupy 5 % of the nation’s land area. Coniferous trees such as the Tian Shan white spruce grow along lower valleys and on north-facing mountain slopes. Many rare animal species inhabit the woodlands, including the Tian Shan bear, the red wolf, and the snow leopard, which are protected by government decree. Other animals in Kyrgyzstan include deer, mountain goats, and mountain sheep. Kyrgyzstan’s mountain lakes are an annual refuge for thousands of migrating birds, including the mountain goose and other rare species. Kyrgyzstan Communications Back to Top
poorly developed; about 100,000 unsatisfied applications for household telephones
domestic: principally microwave radio relay; one cellular provider, likely limited to Bishkek region
international: connections with other CIS countries by landline or microwave radio relay and with other countries by leased connections with Moscow international gateway switch and by satellite; satellite earth stations - 1 Intersputnik and 1 Intelsat; connected internationally by the Trans-Asia-Europe (TAE) fiber-optic line
Kyrgyzstan Culture Back to Top As the capital of a Soviet republic, Bishkek was endowed with the standard cultural facilities, including an opera, ballet, several theater companies, and an orchestra, as well as a Lenin museum, national art and craft museums, and an open-air sculpture museum. Since freedom, funding for those institutions has decreased dramatically, and the cultural facilities have also been hard hit by the departure of local Russians. It also is unclear whether younger Kyrgyz will continue their parents' substantial interest in classical music, which in the Soviet era led several generations to support the national orchestra.

In this process they were dominated by and intermixed with a number of other tribes and peoples that have influenced the ultimate character of the Kyrgyz people. Archaeological researches showed that a primeval man had familiarised himself here since the Stone Age. The Kyrgyz have been known in Central Asia since the 1 st millennium BC and have carried their name throughout the centuries. The earliest notable residents of what is now Kyrgyzstan were warrior tribes of Saka (also known as Scythians), from about the 6

Introductory Note:
  • The cultures of Central Asia and Iran share a number of remarkable features. They are Islamic, albeit Sunnite and Shi'ite, and they enjoy a common cosmology and mythology. Additionally, they share the same early history. Indeed, until the rise of the Western Turks and the subsequent coming of the Turks and Mongols to Central Asia, the primary population of the region was Iranian. As descendants of the earlier Indo-European peoples, they followed the teachings of Zoroaster and worshiped his God, Ahura Mazda.
  • From the foregoing, we can conclude that any social, political, or ideological study of the early history of this region must take this common heritage into consideration. To respect the shared values of the Iranian and the Central Asian peoples, therefore, the following arrangement is adhered to. The more recent events appear under "Central Asia" and "Iran" respectively. The ancient and medieval issues that cannot be logically divided appear under "Central Asia and Iran."
