Geography of Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan is one of the 5 Central Asian Republics which declared their independence from the ex-Soviet Union in 1991. It is a landlocked country and is surrounded by Kazakhstan in the north, China in the South and East, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in the West. Like the other republics, it is situated on the ancient Silk Road which connected China with the West and trade has long been a staple of its economy. Today, it has become a transshipment point for illegal drugs entering Russia and Europe from Asia. It has a mountainous terrain with both the Tian Shan and the Pamir mountain ranges covering much of the country. The mountains are bisected by numerous deep valleys and are home to many glaciers. Most of the agricultural land lies in northern and eastern plains areas. The land has many lakes and rivers that flow from the ice-capped mountains into the valleys. One of its lakes, Issyk-Kul, in the northern ranges of the Tian Shan Mountains, is the world's second largest alpine lake (Lake Titicaca in Bolivia is the largest) and is 5250 feet above sea level. The highest peak in the mountains, Jengish Chokusu, is 24,400 feet above sea level.

90. Kyrgyz Republic: Geography
geography of the Kyrgyz Republic In days of old the territory of what is now kyrgyzstan was crossed by the Great Silk Road leading from Europe to China.
http://freenet.bishkek.su/kyrgyzstan/geogr.html
Geography of the Kyrgyz Republic
Between China and Central Asia there is a country, lifted by its mountains above the world. Tien Shan is the name given to the mountains by Marco Polo, a great traveller and merchant, who walked across the territory of the present-day Kyrgyzstan on the Great Silk Road. Kyrgyzstan is at the same altitude with Italy and only a little smaller in area. It will take one only 4 hours to fly to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, from Moscow, and not more than an hour from Tashkent and Alma-Ata. The climate is sharply continental. Summer is usually dry and sunny in the valleys, whereas it often rains in the mountains. Clear good weather lasts till December. There are thaws in winter and cold spells in spring and autumn. Kyrgyzstan ranks first in Central Asia in prospected coal reserves. Mining and processing of non-ferrous metals, such as antimony, mercury, tin, copper and others, is presently the focus of the ore-mining industry and it's prospects for the future. Wool processing and cotton growing occupy a conspicuous place in the economy of the republic.

Introduction
In September of 1991 the 10 station Kyrgyz broadband seismic network (KNET) became operational. In its lifetime under IRIS sponsorship using JSP funding, it has so far survived the economic and political turbulence from the breakup of the former Soviet Union and the formation of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, as well as the occurrence of the 19 August 1992 magnitude 7.4 Suusamyr earthquake located underneath the network station Almayashu (AML). KNET is a cooperative project sponsored by IRIS and the government of Kyrgyzstan. It is operated by Kyrgyz Institute of Seismology (KIS) and the Institute of High Temperature Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IVTAN). The IRIS participants in this project have included University of California at San Diego, Indiana University, Rennselear Polytechnic Institute, and the University of Colorado. The University of California San Diego last had responsibility for collecting and processing KNET data in 2002.
Geography
KNET is located along part of the boundary between the northern Tien Shan mountains and the Kazakh platform (see image below). Several major tectonic features are spanned by the network including a series of thrust faults in the Tien Shan, the Chu Valley, and the NW- SE trending ridges north of Bishkek. At present there exist over 8000 triggered events. These sources are dominated by the aftershock sequences for the magnitude 6.2 earthquake near the city of Osh (~200 km southwest of the network) in May 1992 and the 19 August 1992 magnitude 7.4 Suusamyr event located under the KNET station AML. In addition there are a large number of regional events from the Pamir-Hindu Kush region and from westernmost China.

Alamedin Valley, a day's bus ride south of the capital, Bishkek (2000m elevation). During last year's summer break from study at APU I spent twelve weeks working in and travelling around the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan.
My time spent working in Bishkek mainly involved doing tasks like painting, or fitting doors and windows, but it was also a time spent getting to know some of the Kyrgyz people I worked with. Most were keen to share their life stories, or tell me that they liked English football teams, and most would offer their intriguing perspectives of what life in the UK must be like. Village chiefs sitting at the head table during a traditional mountain village wedding in San Tash. Kyrgyz, Kazaks and Dungans were in attendance. The three weeks I was not working, I spent travelling around the country. Public transport is, shall we say, unreliable at all times, but great fun and very cheap. Kyrgyzstan is arid and mountainous, and home to several large freshwater lakes. The rural population of Kyrgyzstan live a more traditional lifestyle than their city counterparts. True to their Muslim faith, and great horse-lovers, many even continue to live a nomadic existence in portable felt houses known as yurts.
