Geography
The Kyrgyz Republic is located in the heart of the Eurasian continent. The country occupies a strategic location on the Silk Road - between the markets of the former Soviet Union and Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, and China. Stretching 900 km from east to west and 425 km from north to south, Kyrgyzstan's total landmass is 199.9 thousand square kilometres, which is about the size of Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal combined. The northernmost part of the country is on the same latitude as Rome, and the southernmost end is on a level with the island of Sicily. The borders of the Republic generally follow natural boundaries - mountain ranges and rivers. Kyrgyzstan borders on Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the south, and China to the south and east. Kyrgyzstan is remarkable for its natural beauty. It is a country of sunshine, high snow-covered mountains, deep gorges cut by swift rivers and 1,923 mountain lakes. The country's generally mountainous terrain has an average elevation of 2,750 metres above sea level. Because of differences in elevation and degree of shelter, the climate of the Republic differs widely. In the summer months, travellers can spend part of a single day in a sunny valley, in a flowering meadow high in the mountains, and in glaciers above the clouds. Extensive mountain ranges featuring ridges, deep gorges, wide steppe valleys and virgin forests are complemented by more than 40,000 rivers and streams that provide irrigation and a vast potential for hydroelectricity production.

Soil
The intricate mountain relief structure and mixed character of environmental conditions have determined great diversity of Kyrgyzstan's topsoil, vegetation cover and animal world. Deserts, steppes, meadows, forests, bush thickets, bogs, mountain tundra and other types of vegetation can be found on its territory. Vegetation as well as other natural components is distributed depending on both zonal factors such as altitudinal zonality and regional peculiarities: the location of ranges and slopes and the composition and nature of soils. Mountains depending on their location and relief peculiarities feature great diversity of landscapes that sharply replace each other as altitudes change. On the contrary, the general flat relief and closed continental climate make topsoil and vegetation covers in the intermountain troughs and tablelands more uniform. Unlike mountains, altitude zones are not so distinctive here.  Dry and hot deserts of peripheral low intermountain troughs occupy the lowest hypsometric positions (400 m - 1,300 m). Wormwood and ephemeral formations grown on northern sierozems represent them in Chui and Talas valleys; and wormwood, halophytic and Ephedraceae deserts on light and dark sierozems in the area near the Ferghana Valley. All these arid submontane valleys and foothills have almost everywhere been developed and turned into oasis areas where numerous villages, towns and workers' villages are surrounded with plantations of technical, grain and vegetable crops, and gardens. Deserts are the habitat of various rodents (yellow gopher, jerboa); reptiles (Central Asian tortoise, eastern small boa, lizards); and birds  (saji, desert bullfinch).

    Kyrgyzstan, An Overview
Kyrgyzstan is a newly-independent republic of the former Soviet Union, nestled in the Tian Shan mountains next to China and Kazakhstan. About five million people live here, a little over half of whom are ethnic Kyrgyz, a Turkic relative of the Mongols. The cities have a very distinct Soviet taste. But dotting the countryside are the same sheep herds and yurtas that Ghengis Khan1s Mongol hordes saw as they rode through this land.

    The people of Kyrgyzstan
As a result of its varied and turbulent history, the country throughout the centuries became a real melting pot of nationalities: The ethnic group of the Kyrgyz, traditionally nomads that still nowadays often live as half-nomads (see also "Kyrgyz people and their traditions"), makes up only a bit more than 50% of the population. The two other important ethnic groups are Russians and Uzbeks, both with about 15 % of the population. The Russians came into the region during the 19 th century, and especially the capital Bishkek, only 125 years old, is heavily influenced by the Russian way of life and Soviet architecture. Because of this people, also the second-biggest religious group in the mostly muslim country (80%) are Russian-orthodox. The Uzbek people lives to its biggest part in the south of the country, close to the border to Uzbekistan . This part of the country is also much more influenced by muslim traditions than the rest. Other people out of those more than 80 nationalities and ethnic groups living in Kyrgyzstan are European ones like Germans or Ukrains, muslim chinese people like Dungans and Uighurs, as well as Tatars.

Asia Kyrgyzstan History and Government - Kyrgyzstan
    History :
In early 2005, tensions flared, as protests for the resignation President Akayev accumulated. This was a result of his alleged interference in parliamentary elections. Numerous independent and opposition candidates were supposedly barred from standing. There have been mass rallies in Kyrgyzstan, which were reportedly heightened by reports of violent police intervention, which turned a relatively peaceful rally into a much more passionate one. Protestors in the capital have already stormed the main government building and are demanding justice.
Government : Under the constitution accepted by referendum in 1994, legislative power is vested in the bicameral 105-strong
