Calling code Kyrgyzstan Kyrgyz : Кыргызстан, variously transliterated ), formally the Kyrgyz Republic , and sometimes known as Kirghizia , is a country in Central Asia . Landlocked and mountainous, it borders China Kazakhstan Tajikistan , and Uzbekistan . Its capital is Bishkek . Once a republic of the Soviet Union , Kyrgyzstan has been independent since 1991. Remaining reasonably stable throughout most of the 1990s, the country's young democracy showed relative promise under the leadership of former President Askar Akayev , but moved towards autocracy and authoritarianism . At present Kyrgyzstan is in turmoil following a sudden revolution and President Akayev's resignation on April 4 , and the political situation in the country remains uncertain.

Kyrgyzstan Plants and Animal Back to Top Forests occupy 5 % of the nation’s land area. Coniferous trees such as the Tian Shan white spruce grow along lower valleys and on north-facing mountain slopes. Many rare animal species inhabit the woodlands, including the Tian Shan bear, the red wolf, and the snow leopard, which are protected by government decree. Other animals in Kyrgyzstan include deer, mountain goats, and mountain sheep. Kyrgyzstan’s mountain lakes are an annual refuge for thousands of migrating birds, including the mountain goose and other rare species. Kyrgyzstan Communications Back to Top
poorly developed; about 100,000 unsatisfied applications for household telephones
domestic: principally microwave radio relay; one cellular provider, likely limited to Bishkek region
international: connections with other CIS countries by landline or microwave radio relay and with other countries by leased connections with Moscow international gateway switch and by satellite; satellite earth stations - 1 Intersputnik and 1 Intelsat; connected internationally by the Trans-Asia-Europe (TAE) fiber-optic line
Kyrgyzstan Culture Back to Top As the capital of a Soviet republic, Bishkek was endowed with the standard cultural facilities, including an opera, ballet, several theater companies, and an orchestra, as well as a Lenin museum, national art and craft museums, and an open-air sculpture museum. Since freedom, funding for those institutions has decreased dramatically, and the cultural facilities have also been hard hit by the departure of local Russians. It also is unclear whether younger Kyrgyz will continue their parents' substantial interest in classical music, which in the Soviet era led several generations to support the national orchestra.

Kyrgyzstan celebrates Days of Slav culture and literature
Traditional Days of the Slav culture and written language started in the Chuysky region of Kyrgyzstan. The event is celebrated for the tenth time, every year it is celebrated in a special way.
This time the event is to be celebrated not in the Kyrgyzstan capital, but in the towns and villages of the Chuysky valley, where majority of Slavs live and where traditions are carefully observed. Another peculiarity of the celebration this year is a bigger number of its participants. Traditionally guests from Russia and Belarus take part in the event, but this year actors, writers, journalists and diplomats from Ukraine are also coming to Kyrgyzstan to celebrate the Days of the Slavic culture and written language.
The key idea of the Days’ celebration in Kyrgyzstan is to make the nations closer, to get a better picture of other people’s cultures and ways of living. Guests from the CIS Slav countries said at the Days’ opening ceremony, that culture was designed to make people closer to each other, not separate them from each other. In many respects Kyrgyzstan may serve an example to it. Since establishment of the independent state practically no international conflict occurred there. Russian Tatars live in the republic, newspapers and magazines are regularly published in the Russian and Ukrainian languages. It means, cultures of different people live in harmony in Kyrgyzstan.
