Working Papers on Central Asia and Iran Prepared by Professor Iraj Bashiri
e-mail: bashi001@umn.edu
web: bashiris.com Central Asia Iran Tajikistan Update ... Tajikistan in the 20th Century
Introductory Note:
  • The cultures of Central Asia and Iran share a number of remarkable features. They are Islamic, albeit Sunnite and Shi'ite, and they enjoy a common cosmology and mythology. Additionally, they share the same early history. Indeed, until the rise of the Western Turks and the subsequent coming of the Turks and Mongols to Central Asia, the primary population of the region was Iranian. As descendants of the earlier Indo-European peoples, they followed the teachings of Zoroaster and worshiped his God, Ahura Mazda.
  • From the foregoing, we can conclude that any social, political, or ideological study of the early history of this region must take this common heritage into consideration. To respect the shared values of the Iranian and the Central Asian peoples, therefore, the following arrangement is adhered to. The more recent events appear under "Central Asia" and "Iran" respectively. The ancient and medieval issues that cannot be logically divided appear under "Central Asia and Iran."
  • This web page covers a vast area from Africa to India and from Kazakhstan to the Persian Gulf. It also

Nearly everyone in Kyrgyzstan is Muslim, but Islam has sat relatively lightly on the Kyrgyz people. The geographically isolated southern provinces tend to be more conservative and Islamicised than the industrialised, Russified north. Ancient but still important tribal affiliations further reinforce the north-south differences. The Kyrgyz language has not been imposed on non-speakers in Kyrgyzstan (as Uzbek has in Uzbekistan), and the use of Russian persists, especially in the north.
Central Asian literature has traditionally been popularised in the form of songs, poems and stories by itinerant minstrels, called akyn . But the Kyrgyz are also associated with something rather more complex - an entire cycle of oral legends, 20 times longer than the Odyssey, about a hero-of-heroes called Manas.
k y r g y z s t a n The stories are part of a wider, older tradition, but have come to be associated with the Kyrgyz people and culture partly because Soviet scholars 'gave' Manas to them in efforts to create separate cultures for the various Central Asian peoples. Although the oral tradition is pretty much dead, Manas is still a figure for the Kyrgyz to hang their dreams on. Kyrgyzstan has two well-known living authors - Chinghiz Aitmatov and Kazat Akmatov.

Culture shock - some “bits and pieces” Gestures
To attract attention raise your hand and say “kechiresiz” – or more simply : “oy”
To apologise the Kyrgyz place their right hand, palm flat against the chest – sometimes they use both hands. This gesture is also sometimes used when serving tea or when welcoming someone.
You beckon someone the whole hand is used – not just a single finger … the hand is held palm up and the fingers are repeated curled and unfurled.
To pinch your cheek, or rub your cheek in a downward motion, is used to signify that someone has done something bad, or shameful. Greetings
Shaking hands – men shake hands – but usually women do not. (A recent trend is for business women to shake hands). Men often shake with both hands to show respect – the left hand patting the top of the other persons hand – although there are variations … one man may shake with the right hand whilst tapping the other person’s shoulder with his left hand and, in the South, men might shake with the right hand holding his left to his breast. Don’t shake hands across a thresh-hold.
When women meet they usually bow slightly – even from afar. They sometimes greet each other by touching right cheeks without actually kissing – although an older woman may place a kiss on the cheek of a younger woman. It is considered polite for younger and foreign women to kiss elderly women on the cheek.

Nomadic way of life: This way of living appeared as the necessity to shepherd many flocks of sheep on seasonal pastures of different heights. This lifestyle led to the isolation of families, had to go up to high mountains, where were enough grass for livestock. This exactly acts as the unique reason of hospitality of Kyrgyz people. Guests had brought news; guests were new people, with whom they may talk to…. For guests offered the best and they were long-awaited people for Kyrgyz.
Ancient dwelling of Nomads – the Yurta. An experienced master may complete the yurta within one month, but it will serve decades. Yurt is accompanied people during their whole life – it is moved around with them, and when a man dies, his relatives set yurta near his home, to express their sorrow and respect memory to the dead. The yurt consists of wood carcass and felt. It is easily removable and transportable from one place to another. When setting the yurt, firstly placed the jamb and hung a door, later on set wood grids (kerege), constituting the walls. Tunduk (wood circle of top piece of the yurt) connected to the kerege with long bent perches. Later on the kerege wrapped in ornamented felt, mats and covered with parts of felt different shapes and size, and tied up in narrow embroidered stripes and cords. The yurt settlement takes about one hour.

Kyrgyz People and Culture
"At the beginning of mankind, God gave land to every people, according to their talents and personality He distributed fertile valleys, rocky mountains, dry deserts, forests, and everything the world had to offer. At the end of the distribution, God noticed the Kyrgyz, who had been sleeping at the foot of a tree, when everybody else was fighting for the best part of the world. This carelessness touched God so much in his very heart, that He decided to give him an especially fertile and beautiful part of the world, so he wouldn't have to work too hard to survive." Kyrgyz Legend The Kyrgyz are traditionally Nomads, who originally came from Sibiria and then moved to the south until what today is Kyrgyzstan . The have always been living with cattle, especially sheep and horses from the very beginning were important animals, but also cows and goats are being raised, as well as donkeys for the smallest of the family to ride them. Well, horse-back riding is one of the most important parts of Kyrgyz culture, and a Kyrgyz saying even tells us: "If you would have only one day to live, you should spend at least half of it in the saddle."

Tourism in Kyrgyzstan is increasing by 15 – 20 % annually, tourists being attracted by the country’s magnificent and unspoilt scenery, which includes Lake Issy Kul, a Biosphere Reserve of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) and area of the UNESCO project in Kyrgyzstan.
Kyrgyzstan is mostly unspoilt mountain country and high grassy meadows (NoviNomad) Located 1600m above sea level among the mountain peaks of the Tien Shen Mountain range, Lake Issy Kul is some 170km long and 70km wide, making it the second-largest alpine lake in the world after Lake Titicaca in South America. Nearly 95% of Kyrgyzstan is unspoilt mountain country, the setting for high, grassy meadows boasting antelope, ibex, rare snow leopards and brown bears, as well as for dramatic glaciers and snow-bound peaks. Lake Issy Kul, surrounded by hotels and health spas, is an ideal base for ecotourism activities in Kyrgyzstan, including swimming, hiking and mountain climbing. The UNESCO project in Kyrgyzstan, set up in partnership with the Novinomad Ecotourism Development Company, is setting up an association of ecotourism service providers, the country having a growing tourism industry and a wealth of natural and cultural resources, but little experience in managing the growth of tourism in a sustainable way.
