Peter Brimelow writes: Thanksgiving is over (we’ve pointed out its forgotten National Question dimension ) but did Santa Claus bring up the end of your parade this year? That’s a tradition that’s going to go, if the Abolish America Army has anything to do with it. (Separation of saint and state, you know. Any sightings of Father Frost yet?) Claus Canned in MD! Hard to believe that our ever-popular competition to find the most egregious attempt to abolish Christmas used to appear in National Review (click here for story and last year’s competition) before Buckley abandoned immigration reform and started publishing attacks on the villains who talked him into advocating it.

Units on African-American Culture Kwanzaa by Emily Henesler Art Drama Experiences Literature ... Strategies Day one Lesson one
Title: Kwanzaa Preview
Subjects/Strategies: Reading, Language Arts
Visualization, Brainstorming
Time Required: 45 minutes
Materials: chalk, blackboard space, My First Kwanzaa Book by Deborah M. Newton, a Kwanzaa portfolio booklet for every student
Objectives: The students will be able to:
write something they like about their holiday on the board.
orally share ideas before, during, and after the reading of the book.
write one paragraph on what they think Kwanzaa is.
Pre-Lesson: The teacher will tell the students to close their eyes. The teacher will say the following: "Think of a holiday where all of your family gets together and you eat, visit, and maybe exchange gifts. You wake up on that morning and smell a turkey in the oven, and fresh pumpkin pie. You rush downstairs to see gifts wrapped in colorful paper. Pretty soon, your relatives start to come: grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. You have a big meal and your stomach so full you can barely move. Later you play games with your family, visit, and perhaps sing songs." The teacher will tell the students to open their eyes. The teacher will ask the students what holiday they were thinking of. Students will probably respond with "Christmas." The teacher will ask, if anyone celebrates a different holiday instead of Christmas around the same time of year. Hanukah or other such holidays may be mentioned.

LESSONS FROM THE KWANZAA CANDLES
By Gail Forsyth-Vail, DRE, North Parish Church, N. Andover, MA Unitarian Sunday School Society 1999 Intergenerational Service Award Winner Chalice Lighting Words
Each morning we must hold out the chalice of our being to receive, to carry, and to give back. (Dag Hammarskjold) Song: Rise Up, O Flame (#362) Worship Leader
This is the time of the year when Kwanzaa comes, followed closely by the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The message spoken quietly in African American homes at Kwanzaa is shouted to the world two weeks later at the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. Even if we are not African American, there is a lot that the candles of Kwanzaa have to teach us. The Kwanzaa candles are seven - three red, a black, and three green. The black candle is a celebration of being black, of the unique and special qualities each person brings to the whole family or community. It is a candle of the present, of today. The green candles are vision candles - candles of hopes, dreams, and promises for the future. The red candles are struggle candles, past candles, candles the color of blood, candles the color of courage. All seven candles help African Americans to remember a long struggle against injustice, against unfairness, and to promise each other that they will continue to work together against injustice. As a white person, I can't be a part of the remembering or the promise. I will not light the candles, for they are not mine to light. I will, however, honor the struggle for justice by speaking a history - the story of a people which is not often enough told in our society.

I returned to the practice of celebrating kwanzaa about 7 years ago when I was On Saturdays I spent my mornings teaching school age children at St.
http://www.mdcbowen.org/p1/fpp/kwanzaa.htm
Kwanzaa Reborn
From mbowen in Salon February, 1999 That fall, we arranged a field trip over to rural jersey to go apple picking. Johann, the young priest who ran the program had suggested this as part of a harvest mass in the church calendar. While we were over in jersey we got huge bags of apples and a few giant pumpkins to boot. The mass was a great success; it's always pleasant when you can excite young people to participate in church and I was feeling pretty good. But as this rite progressed I was shocked into recognition. This was Kwanzaa all over again - and watching these kids took me back to my own childhood. We agreed to celebrate the Karamu on one Saturday instead of attempting to do the entire 7 day rite. I would lead. Some of the adults were concerned that it not be commercial or phony like the big Kwanzaa / black expo being advertised on the radio. Some of them had gone in prior years to the convention center and considered it all a big hustle. I shared their concerns. So there was a great deal of rediscovery and rededication in my approach to the celebration. As the elder, I was to be the caretaker of spirit for this occasion. I bought a new kofi, and borrowed my cousin's full length boubou for the occasion. I encouraged everyone to get some clothes or something - even if it was just a pin - to wear. One of the ladies brought some cloth to wear as sashes for kids who had nothing else. I photocopied some terms and passed them around.

by Robert Rucker Kwanzaa in a nutshell is the brainchild of Dr. Maulana Karenga. Maulana invented the holiday one year after the Watts riots of Los Angeles to exemplify the rebuilding and unity of the black community that fostered after this violent event. Thereafter it has become responsible for inspiring Kwanzaa celebrations in England, Canada, Zimbabwe, and Kenya. The foundation of Kwanzaa (meaning first fruits in Swahili) lies in the Nguzo Saba, the Seven Principles which begins on December 26 to January 1. The Celebration The first day Umoja (unity) to strive for unity in the family , nation, and race. The second day Kujichaglia (self-determination) means that we will define ourselves, name ourselves, and create for ourselves. The third day, Ujima (collective work and responsibility) - to build and maintain our community together and to make our sisters and brothers problems our problems. The fourth day is Ujamaa (cooperative economics), this day symbolizes our need to own our own stores, shops, and other businesses so that we all may profit together. With Ujamaa in full swing we can end some of the poverty that exist in our community. The fifth day

Many of the songs on this recording are familiar holiday songs, and children will simply listen and enjoy (songs with no additional activities have been omitted from these notes). Others provide opportunities for related discussion, activities, or movement. Several holidays and customs presented in these songs may be unfamiliar to children. Therefore, some explanation and or supplemental materials will be helpful. It is only by learning about each other that we can teach tolerance and peace to the children in our care. Kwanzaa
(Music and Sheet Music can be found in the Song of the Month section) Since most children ( and adults for that matter! ) don’t know what Kwanzaa is, this is a great opportunity to introduce this wonderful holiday to children. Kwanzaa is a time for African Americans to honor their people, their past, and their unique culture. It lasts seven days, from December 26th to January 1st. Have children hold up seven fingers every time the word seven is sung, or a picture of the number seven. Gather several traditional African instruments to play. Or make special shakers decorated with African designs.
See the Homemade Instruments page for suggestions.
