I did my best to present both sides fairly, due to it's origin.
My purpose is to educate through art, not insult anyone. First of all, this holiday is acknowledged by many African-Americans, and it is also unrecognized or ignored by many African-Americans also.
It is often printed on calendars, but it is not an "official" U.S. Holiday celebration that allows time off from work with pay, like Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc. Just like Martin Luther King Day, not all states participate in it's celebration. And, I personally never heard of it until I moved to the Washington, D.C. area. Kwanzaa was never mentioned in my hometown. I'm also not African-American sothis holiday wasn't mentioned in my home at all. Kwanzaa is a holiday that is a personal choice on whether you want to observe it or not because of it's political and racial undertones that can't be ignored (
which I briefly mention below .) Some consider this a holiday that celebrates racial strife. Others consider it a week of ethnic awareness. It's all depends on personal viewpoints. I scanned several websites. I spoke with some African-American friends and I also used the book referenced to create this page.

Each year, beginning about this time, I get several questions from teachers along these lines: Can we sing Christmas carols in our school program?
Can I have a Christmas tree in my room?
What about a nativity scene? What about a menorah?
May I teach my students about Kwanzaa? In the same way, public schools may teach about religious holidays and the religious aspects of those holidays. The secular aspects of a holiday may be celebrated, while religious aspects of the holiday may not. What does this mean in terms of the classroom? You may teach a unit on religious holidays. In this unit, you may teach your students about Christmas and the reason for its celebration. You may also teach about Hanukkah and why it is celebrated. You may teach about Ramadan. You can teach the celebration of Kwanzaa. However, you must present this information in an objective way, without expressing preference for one over the other. Furthermore, you may display religious symbols while teaching this topic; however, once you have completed the unit, the symbols must come down. For instance, it is okay to have a menorah displayed while learning about Hanukkah, but you must remove it once you have left that topic.

    Winter Celebrations
by Judie Haynes December and January are a great time to have your students share their heritage with the rest of the school population. Winter celebrations is another theme for December/January. It is a great time to have your students share their heritage with the rest of the school population. So reserve that space in your school's center hallway or decorate the wall outside your classroom. The scope of this unit is wide because many of our ESL students do not celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah. You need to look at your student population before deciding how you will introduce this theme. Winter holidays that could be included are Diwali (India), New Year's Day, Epiphany (European), Chinese New Year (Asia). I am using Japanese New Year to demonstrate how I teach winter celebrations to my ESL students. This lesson is written to follow the TESOL Pre-K-12 ESL Standards.

by Dorothy Winbush Riley A complete guide to celebrating Kwanzaa which includes information on its seven principles, ceremonies, traditional meals, clothing, gift giving, folktales, and proverbs. The book elaborates upon each of these principles through a combination of first-person narratives, poetry, folktales, quotations, and proverbs.
The section on Kujichaguila (self-determination), for example, includes poems from Nikki Giovanni, and Serena Gordon, and excerpts from Booker T. Washington's Up from Slavery and Michael Jordan's Rare Air. Ultimately, Riley says, the principles of Kwanzaa cannot be relegated to seven days at the end of the year; if we really want to take Kwanzaa to heart, we must live it in every moment. A very good book on the Kwanzaa celebration that will teach you how to do it right.

Grandma sat up and patted the bed beside her. Lisha pushed herself up onto the bed and snuggled against Grandma. "What’s a harambee?" She asked again. "Harambee means we all pull together," said Grandma. "It means that when I make a gift for you, it’s not just for you – it’s for the whole community. Kids' books teach holiday traditions
    By JANIS CAMPBELL
Knight Ridder Newspapers Posted: Dec. 4, 2004 Holiday books for the youngest child are beautiful gifts - but also something you might want to pick up before the hectic days of last-minute shopping. Advertisement
They can help explain the holiday doings for a toddler and also help you by keeping little hands and eyes busy. The game of dreidel is a tradition for Hanukkah, and "Spin the Dreidel!" by Alexandra Cooper (Little Simon, $7.99) tells the story of the game in a sturdy board book with a dreidel in the spine for little ones to spin. The illustrations by Claudine Gevry are warm and kid-friendly. Another board book tells the Christmas story in "B is for Bethlehem: A Christmas Alphabet" with beautiful folk-art illustrations by Elisa Kleven. The author tries to keep the story true to the timeline, but that does make for some tough going in the alphabet for little ones, beginning with "A is for Augustus."
