Kwanzaa - What is it?
This celebration is not a festival originating in any of the 55 African countries nor is it an "African" Christmas celebration. Kwanzaa is an African Americans celebration of life from 26 December to 1 January.
Maulana (Ron) Karenga is the creator of Kwanzaa. Dr. Maulana Karenga introduced the festival in 1966 to the United States as a ritual to welcome the first harvests to the home. Dr. Karenga created this festival for African Americans as a response to the commercialism of Christmas. In fact one might say that Kwanzaa has similarities with Thanksgiving in the United States or the Yam Festival in Ghana and Nigeria. The word "kwanza" is a KiSwahili (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania) word meaning "first."

Kwanzaa - A Celebration of Heritage
Kwanzaa was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966. It is celebrated through singing, speaking, dancing and reciting traditional. Kwanzaa is built on seven principles that are commonly known as "Nguzo Saba". These principles are:
  • umoja - unity
  • kujichagulia - self-determination
  • ujima - collective work and responsibility
  • ujamaa - cooperative economics
  • nia - purpose
  • kuumba - creativity
  • imani - faith Kwanzaa was developed from elements of the African heritage. The African celebration of Kwanzaa was a ceremony of appreciation for the "first fruits of harvest". The four elements that made up the original African meaning of Kwanzaa were unity, awareness of ancestry and heritage, recommitment to traditional values, and reverence for creator and the creation. The modern celebration of Kwanzaa lasts seven days, from December 26 to January 1. Each of the seven days of the celebration is dedicated to one of the seven principles. Each day one candle is lit that represents each principle.

Everybody say, Kwanzaa, Umoja, Nee-a, Emonee.
    Say, Kwanzaa, Umoja, Nee-a, Emonee.
Everybody say, Kwanzaa, Umoja, Nee-a, Emonee.
Say, Kwanzaa, Umoja, Nee-a, Emonee. All right, now we're going to tell you what those words mean in Swahili. " Kwanzaa " means first, that's why we¹re holding up one finger on each hand " Umoja " means unity, all of us being here together, sharing and caring for the holidays. " Nee-a " means purpose and " Emonee " means faith that we'll have another wonderful harvest and planting season. Here we go: Everybody say, Kwanzaa, Umoja, Nee-a, Emonee.

    Seven Days and Seven Principles
A principle is a rule or law that governs conduct in a given situation. The Nguzo Saba are the set of principles/values by which Black Americans must order their relations and live their lives, if they are to make decisions about their lives and begin to build a new world and a new people to develop it. As a product of tradition and reason of history, the Nguzo Saba responds to current needs which can be the method used by Blacks to solve the problems on every level which confronts us as a people. Thus, the Nguzo Saba are social and spiritual principles, dealing with ways for us to relate to each other and rebuild our lives in our own images. Nguzo Saba (social and spiritual principles) and the Seven Days of Kwanzaa:
  • UMOJA (UNITY) (oo-MOE-jah) - To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race. The first day of Kwanza is shaped by the first principle of the festival, Umoja (oo-MOH-ja), or unity. Emphasis is given on finding unity in the family, community, nation and race. Children can practice this principle by making an effort to get along with one another all day.
  • KUJICHAGULIA (SELF DETERMINATION) (koo-jee-cha-goo-LEE-ah) - To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves.

    Origin and Background
to the Festivities of Kwanzaa Kwanzaa (KWAN-za) is a seven-day African-American cultural festival that is observed from December 26 to January 1. It is the only nationally celebrated, indigenous, non-heroic African-American holiday in the United States. During this time, families explore, share and celebrate the African-American community, their culture and their history. It's a time for black Americans to recognize their African roots, and honor the achievements of their people throughout history. People across the globe have observed Kwanzaa since 1966, when Dr. Maulana Karenga founded the cultural event. Dr. Karenga, then a professor at California State University at Long Beach, wanted to create a holiday about bringing black Americans together and strengthening the bonds between black people. When visualizing a holiday for the African-American community, Dr. Karenga was inspired by Kiswahili, the African language commonly known as Swahili. As the most regularly spoken language in Africa, Swahili represented a cultural and historical bond between African-Americans. Dr. Karenga named the holiday Kwanzaa after the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning "first fruits of the harvest." The extra "a" was added to the name in order to give the word greater impact.
