"I thought I would miss skyscrapers," she says. Still, "weekends are pretty slow. I'm not a party person." Lincoln Park's strenuous International Baccalaureate program, Caroline admits, reluctantly, helped prepare her for Swarthmore 's rigorous academics. Monday midnights she hosts her own radio show. She's enjoying observing 2nd graders for her education class. Caroline spends a lot of time in her dorm, just talking. "I thought, three roommatesno way. We've done well, surprisingly well. "I thought going to college I wouldn't find cliques, but you do," says Caroline. "You even find the typical jock around here. I wanted to avoid an environment like that; that's why I didn't go to the University of Illinois. At the same time, I think the general spirit of the school has remained unchanged for 130 years: Learning comes first." How to Explain Kwanzaa to Your Child
Kwanzaa is a relatively new festival, created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a way to help Africans and African-Americans celebrate family, community and culture. It's celebrated from December 26 through January 1 of each year. If you're planning to celebrate Kwanzaa with your family, you'll need to talk to your children about the festival's origins and explain the various symbols and rituals to them. Steps: Explain the purpose of Kwanzaa. The festival was created to strengthen Pan-African culture and community, and to reaffirm a common identity among African and African-American peoples. Discuss the difference between cultural and religious festivals. Kwanzaa is not a religious festival, so it doesn't conflict with the observances of Christmas, Hanukkah or other sectarian winter festivals. Talk about the festival's name. "Kwanzaa" is derived from the Swahili phrase meaning "first fruits," which refers to ancient African harvest festivals.

How to Make a Kwanzaa Calendar
Teach your children about the seven days of Kwanzaa with this fun craft project. Steps: Trim a 9-inch-by-12-inch piece of white construction paper to 7 inches by 10.5 inches. Turn the paper sideways, and then use a ruler and pencil to mark off six vertical lines at 1.5-inch intervals. Trace over the lines with a black pen. This will create seven spaces for the seven days of Kwanzaa. Write "26" at the top center of the far left space to represent December 26, the first day of Kwanzaa, which starts on a Sunday this year (1999). Continue numbering the spaces, ending with "1" on the final space, to represent January 1, the last day of Kwanzaa. Write the Swahili word "Umoja" under the date in the far left space. Write its English translation, "Unity," at the bottom of the space. This represents the first of the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Write in this space how you and your family will celebrate Kwanzaa that day and how you will recognize the principle of umoja. Draw pictures or use magazine cutouts to illustrate.
