Paperback -
400 pages Order Today The Complete Kwanzaa: Celebrating Our Cultural Harvest
by Dorothy Winbush Riley A complete guide to celebrating Kwanzaa which includes information on its seven principles, ceremonies, traditional meals, clothing, gift giving, folktales, and proverbs. The book elaborates upon each of these principles through a combination of first-person narratives, poetry, folktales, quotations, and proverbs.
The section on Kujichaguila (self-determination), for example, includes poems from Nikki Giovanni, and Serena Gordon, and excerpts from Booker T. Washington's Up from Slavery and Michael Jordan's Rare Air. Ultimately, Riley says, the principles of Kwanzaa cannot be relegated to seven days at the end of the year; if we really want to take Kwanzaa to heart, we must live it in every moment. A very good book on the Kwanzaa celebration that will teach you how to do it right.

Kwanzaa - What is it?
This celebration is not a festival originating in any of the 55 African countries nor is it an "African" Christmas celebration. Kwanzaa is an African Americans celebration of life from 26 December to 1 January.
Maulana (Ron) Karenga is the creator of Kwanzaa. Dr. Maulana Karenga introduced the festival in 1966 to the United States as a ritual to welcome the first harvests to the home. Dr. Karenga created this festival for African Americans as a response to the commercialism of Christmas. In fact one might say that Kwanzaa has similarities with Thanksgiving in the United States or the Yam Festival in Ghana and Nigeria. The word "kwanza" is a KiSwahili (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania) word meaning "first."

Kwanzaa is now celebrated by an estimated 18 million people in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Britain, India and some African nations. Kwanzaa is devoted to seven principles, know collectively as Nguzo Saba: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative economics) , Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity) and Imani (Faith).

"One world - share it" is Girlguiding UK's Arts theme for 2004. There are four different sections: creative arts; performing arts; visual arts and celebrating arts. We will be adding activities as the year goes along. This first section has some global activities - adapted here for use for Lone Guides working from home. We hope you have fun doing them BATIK Batik is an Indonesian method of decorating fabric with wax and dye. The wax is painted over the fabric which is then dyed in a cold water dye. When the dye has set the fabric is then ironed or washed in hot water so the wax melts and the pattern of dye is left behind. You can try some Batik designs of your own as a way of livening up an old T shirt or making a distinctive wall hanging for your room. Do make sure that its ok to use the fabric you choose and that you have full permission to use the dye first - or it could all get very nasty! This site has instructions for making a kind of Batik T shirt by using glue instead of wax. (It is aimed at parents so many many apologies for the repeated use of the words "your child"! We know you are NOT children or parents - honest!)

Kwanzaa Day 4: Ujamaa
Well, better late than never... The fourth day of Kwanzaa is dedicated to the practice of ujamaa , cooperative economics. A children's book of Kwanzaa crafts, "Kwanzaa Fun: Great Things to Make and Do," further defines ujamaa: "...Using our money and talents wisely so that we all may prosper. We cooperate by sharing money, taking responsibility for our work, buying things together, and using our money to help others who are in need."
For my children, who are four, I decided we would start with just a simple lesson on what money is. We brought down their piggy bank and emptied out some coins and dollar bills. (I decided not to tackle the two-dollar bills that the bank is stuffed with. I wonder if all parents of twins get these off-looking bills as gifts as we did.) Working with my stored knowledge from my early childhood ed teaching days, I first asked them to talk about what they already knew. Surprisingly, they knew quite a bit: several names of the coins (though not matched to their correct denominations), that the dollar bill was made out of a special paper, that you buy stuff with it, that their Daddy gets paid with it. Good start.

These art and crafts projects use materials found typically in the classroom and around the home or office. Construction paper, glue, scissors, pencils, rulers, paper bags, wrapping paper, newspaper, magazines, bread twists, stickers, etc. Plastic lids of varying sizes make excellent circle templates. These projects are inexpensive and easy to make. Most projects can be completed in approximately an hour and can be varied to be seasonal. Also many of the projects can be used in school projects. Older students can make these items with little assistance while smaller children will need some of the items pre made. Always make the project yourself.

    of 6 THE JONES FAMILY
From December 26 to January 1, African-Americans plunge into Kwanzaa (a Swahili word for "the first" or "the first fruits of the harvest"). The celebration is not political, religious or heroic; it is purely cultural and celebrates African-American heritage.
The Jones family has been marking Kwanza since 1991 and some 25 families now share in their celebration. Jacqueline and her husband, Ron, play a game where bits of paper with the Swahili and English words representing the seven principles of Kwanzaa are placed in a bowl. Players who draw those words must then give a short lecture on what the words meant to them.
Now the Joneses have added Creole Bread Pudding, a recipe from Jacqueline's grandmother, to their list of Kwanzaa holiday traditions.
    CREOLE BREAD PUDDING
    Ingredients
1 large loaf or 2 small loaves of quality commercial white bread 6 eggs 4 cups milk 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg for batter, plus 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg for topping
