Kwanzaa: Soul Food Celebration Kwanzaa, celebrated by some African Americans, is a holiday which has gained in popularity in recent years. It came out of the ‘60s cultural revolution that set off an interest in African history, music, art and a growing sense of black consciousness. Kwanzaa, which means "first fruits of the harvest," is celebrated for seven days from December 26 through January 1. It is a cultural, rather than religious, holiday. Each day is celebrated, generally by a gathering of family and friends. Participants discuss and commit to seven guiding principles, one each day. A candle is lighted each day. The first day starts with a black candle–it represents African American people in unity. The next six days alternate between lighting a red candle, representing struggle, and a green candle, representing a "green future." A feast is held on December 31 for sharing, remembering, reassessing and rejoicing.

A Kwanzaa Feast to Remember Kwanzaa is a weeklong celebration, culminating in a joyous night of singing, storytelling and feasting that celebrates togetherness, community and family. The feast on this last night of Kwanzaa is called the Karamu. For the Karamu, it is traditional to serve dishes that incorporate ingredients native to Africa, and particularly ingredients that were introduced to America by Africans. We've put together some delicious African-American inspired menus to help make any Karamu joyous and memorable: Zesty beef kabobs , smooth, smoky eggplant salad, and rich, creamy pumpkin soup start off this feast. Follow up with a mountain of sesame-fragranced fried chicken and heaping platters of collard greens okra and tomatoes. Kwanzaa - What is it?
This celebration is not a festival originating in any of the 55 African countries nor is it an "African" Christmas celebration. Kwanzaa is an African Americans celebration of life from 26 December to 1 January.
Maulana (Ron) Karenga is the creator of Kwanzaa. Dr. Maulana Karenga introduced the festival in 1966 to the United States as a ritual to welcome the first harvests to the home. Dr. Karenga created this festival for African Americans as a response to the commercialism of Christmas. In fact one might say that Kwanzaa has similarities with Thanksgiving in the United States or the Yam Festival in Ghana and Nigeria. The word "kwanza" is a KiSwahili (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania) word meaning "first."

To celebrate Hanukah we make a menorah by having the children make two blue
hand prints with the thumbs over lapping for the large helper candle in the
middle.
After the blue handprints are dried. I have the children put on a yellow
flame with their pointer finger. We do this each day of Hanukah until all
the flames are lit. HANUKKAH BOOKLET AND 2 RECIPES
For Hannukah each year, we have our children make booklets so they can "read" to their parents, what they have learned. Here is how we've done it in the past. My Book About Hannukah What you need: Blue Construction Paper (1 per child), White Yarn (3 pieces per child), White Construction Paper (reg. paper is fine too) (2 per child), Hand drawn Hannukah Symbols (see end for suggested symbols), A hole Punch, Crayons, Glue, Copies of the recipes at the end (1 per recipe for each child), glitter, felt scraps, sequins, etc. 1. Take the piece of blue contruction paper and fold in half to form cover of booklet. Then fold remaining two pieces of white paper. Insert the folded two inside the blue cover to create booklet.

Objectives: The students will be able to:
write something they like about their holiday on the board.
orally share ideas before, during, and after the reading of the book.
write one paragraph on what they think Kwanzaa is.
Pre-Lesson: The teacher will tell the students to close their eyes. The teacher will say the following: "Think of a holiday where all of your family gets together and you eat, visit, and maybe exchange gifts. You wake up on that morning and smell a turkey in the oven, and fresh pumpkin pie. You rush downstairs to see gifts wrapped in colorful paper. Pretty soon, your relatives start to come: grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. You have a big meal and your stomach so full you can barely move. Later you play games with your family, visit, and perhaps sing songs." The teacher will tell the students to open their eyes. The teacher will ask the students what holiday they were thinking of. Students will probably respond with "Christmas." The teacher will ask, if anyone celebrates a different holiday instead of Christmas around the same time of year. Hanukah or other such holidays may be mentioned.

    Kwanzaa
To experience the evolution of a cultural holiday is a rare event not often seen in most lifetimes. Like sensing the shifting but steady change of light in a total eclipse of the sun, we are coming into the brighter light of Kwanzaa. This African-American holiday was first created just thirty years ago and over time has spread to become a welcome tradition among those of African heritage. Despite its awareness among the literati and the scholars, Kwanzaa is still not widely observed across all audiences. Many African-Americans have heard the name but know little of the traditions and cultural aspects of Kwanzaa. Yet, Kwanzaa has really gone mainstream, in the sense that it has attracted a good deal of media attention. There are no less than three books on Kwanzaa and their recipes have been released from major publishers. Kwanzaa is the African American cultural celebration that occurs between Christmas and New Years Day. While it is not founded on religion, it does bear a strong spiritual base in the sense that it emphasizes thought and meditation on seven key principles. And with all holidays, food and cooking become a focal point on which the customs and rituals revolve.
