Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Kuwait was attacked and overrun by Iraq on 2 August 1990. Following several weeks of aerial bombardment, a US-led UN coalition began a ground assault on 23 February 1991 that completely liberated Kuwait in four days. Kuwait has spent more than $5 billion dollars to repair oil infrastructure damaged during 1990-91. Geography
Kuwait is a small state located in the northwestern corner of the Arabian, or Persian, Gulf (referred to hereafter simply as "the Gulf"). Approximately the size of New Jersey, Kuwait covers an area of 17,818 sq kilometers (6,880 sq. miles). At its widest points, Kuwait is 200 kilometers (124 miles) from north to south and 170 kilometers (106 miles) from east to west. The country's most prominent geographical feature is Kuwait Bay, a large natural inlet that extends 40 km into the mainland.
Shaped roughly like a triangle, Kuwait shares borders with Iraq in the north and northwest and Saudi Arabia in the south and southwest; the Gulf bounds Kuwait on the east.
There are nine islands in the country's territorial waters: Warbah, Bubiyan, Maskan, Failaka, Awhah, Umm Al-Naml, Kubbar, Qaruh, and Umm Al-Maradim. The densely inhabited island of Failaka, lying 20 kilometers northeast of Kuwait City at the mouth of Kuwait Bay, is thought by some to be the northernmost point of the Bronze Age civilization of Dilmun. There is also evidence that Failaka (referred to at the time as Ikoras) was settled by Alexandrian troops sometime after 323 BC.

    GEOGRAPHY
In the early 17th century Kuwait was known as Qurain (or Grane), from the Arabic words Qarn (a high hill) and Kout (a fortress). Some historians believe that Barrak Bin Ghuraif, Sheikh of the Bani Khalid tribe, built Kuwait in Grane and that since then the city has been referred to by its present name.
Location Kuwait lies at the north-west corner of the Arabian Gulf, between 28 o and 30 o latitudes and between 46 o and 48 o longitudes. To the north and the west, it shares a border of 240 km (149 miles) with the Republic of Iraq, and to the south and south-west it shares 250 km (155 miles) with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. On the east it has a coastline of 290 km (181 miles) on the Arabian Gulf.
    Area And Topography
The total area of the State of Kuwait is 17,818 sq km. Most of the mainland is a flat sandy desert gradually sloping towards sea level in the east. It is broken by shallow depressions and low hills, which form a ridge at Jal Al-Zor (145 metres above sea level), cut by the Umm Al-Ramam Wadi. The area is locally known as Ghodai, meaning a hill. The southern part of Kuwait is generally flat, with the exception of Ahmadi hill which is 137 metres above sea level.

18 February 2003 Kuwait Geography " Maximum temperatures range from 104 F/40 C to 122 F/50 C during the hottest season in July and August. " Fighting in such heat? Would this be like the Russian Nazi, or Napoleonic winter defeats? If I remember my history, it was the failure of the Nazis to supply themselves, and food I believe was Napoleon's downfall. Still. Such heat will have its complications for non-natives.
