Keywords: Kuwait, Gulf War, Storm, Nursing Kuwait, the country noted as the cultural capital of the Arab world, is located on the continent of Asia. Bounded by Iraq on the left, Iran to the immediate right, Saudi Arabia on the bottom, and the Arabian Gulf to the far right, this small country attracted the attention of the entire world when Iraq invaded it in 1990. The character and traditions of Kuwait have been shaped by the sea, which for so many generations has provided the Kuwaitis with their major source of income. Kuwait's present development has fascinated businesses and drawn investors from other parts of the world. The Kuwaiti flag remains a symbol of dignity and freedom. Another cultural practice, that most westerners might find shocking, is the friendliness shown among people of the same sex. It is a mutual understanding in the Arabic culture for two men to kiss each other on the cheek if they are friends, but it is impolite to kiss a woman on the cheek, no matter how friendly you are. Another social issue is "cruising," which is especially popular among the younger generation of Kuwaitis. The status symbol for cruising in Kuwait is the late model car. Young people drive with music so loud, that it attracts the attention of all spectators.

... return to main page This Soldier's Guide to Kuwait is an electronic "reprint" of a hardcopy Soldier's Guide to Kuwait that was given to US troops deploying to Kuwait in 1996 and 1997. Most of the information should remain the same - however, if any of you have a more current version of the guide and wouldn't mind scanning some pages or emailing us text corrections, we'd be more than grateful. It was also pointed out to us by an American civilian living and working in Kuwait that Kuwait is by now means as strict as far as women's clothing is concerned as this soldier's guide makes it out to be. However, it is still suggested that American females adhere to the standards set forth in this guide when visiting public places in Kuwait so as to not offend the more traditional Kuwaitis who may not agree. Khaled Al-Hajeri
Kuwait is one of the most beautiful Arabic countries around and its capital, Kuwait City, is fantastic. I like it because it's my country and it has many attractions, like shopping, camping, fishing, restaurants and lots more great things. The Al-Sabah family ruled Kuwait and its dynasty was established in the mid-eighteenth century, about 1760. Because of its small size and small number of people, Turks threatened to take actual control of Kuwait in 1899. Kuwait received British protection when the threat was real. In 1938, Kuwait discovered oil under its land and by 1946 was exporting the oil, after which Kuwait's economy flourished. It became independent under Sheikh Abdullah Al-Sabah in 1961. In 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait. For seven months Iraqi soldiers and war-machines destroyed most of our beautiful country. After those seven months Kuwait was free with the help of the world.
