Country Info Kuwait Introduction Kuwait General Data Kuwait Maps Kuwait Culture ... Kuwait Time and Date Kuwait Education Back to Top In 1993 Kuwait's population was highly educated, both in comparison to other states in the region and in comparison to its pre-oil education levels. The impressive education system was brought about by a conscious government decision, made possible by revenues from oil that began in the 1950s, to invest heavily in human resources. The education system has its problems, however. For example, it relies heavily on foreign teachers. In the late 1950s, almost 90 % were non-Kuwaitis. contempt a long-standing government effort to indigenize education, the system continues to rely heavily on foreigners. The system also often fails to train graduates in fields that correspond to Kuwait's most pressing labor needs. particularly in higher education, the system produces many graduates with training in liberal arts and few with training in vocational subjects.

See How to Edit and Style and How-to for help, or this article's talk page The Kuwaiti culture is quite a unique one. Most of the Kuwaitis are extremely liberal and hospitable people. Diwaniah is a unique institution in Kuwait's culture: this is a gathering place for males (usually in the evenings, once or twice or even thrice per week, and sometimes even every night), where Kuwaitis sit around and discuss any possible matters, be it political, social, economical, local or international. Diwaniahs can be called a symbol and proof of Kuwait's democracy, and no other Gulf country has anything like that, because people are free to discuss whatever they like without fear of persecution. Usually tea is served and sometimes snacks are provided by the host. Some prominent merchants or MPs announce their diwaniah timings with the addresses in the newspapers, so anyone from the members of the public can come and visit them.

    Hospitality
The Kuwaiti culture, just like many other arab cultures, takes great pride in hospitality. edit
    Greeting
Kuwaitis traditionally greet each other by shaking hands and kissing cheeks. Traditionally men and women do not exchange more than a few words and possibly a handshake to greet each other in order to respect the privacy of the woman. However, it is common for women and men to kiss cheeks especially as relatives or close friends. It is also customary for people greeting each other to ask a long series of questions such as asking about one's health, that of their relatives, their jobs, etc. in order to relax the other person and give a sense of intimacy. edit
    Tea and Coffee
Hospitality in Kuwait is often portrayed through the serving of tea and coffee . It is very uncommon for a guest to enter a house, office, or even some stores without being offered tea or coffee. In Kuwaiti bedouin custom, a guest's refusal of tea, coffee, or such offerings is sometimes viewed as insulting by the host, as it is as if the guest is denying the host's efforts of being hospitable.

The Kuwaiti child was taught from an early age to serve and protect older family members and also, to ensure cooperation between clans, not to embarrass the family, The degree, which a young Kuwaiti was successful in learning his role was reflected in the amount of (face), he earned. The concept of face has the same meaning as respect and reputation in the west, except the face has intensity about it that is almost inconceivable to a westerner. But face accrues not only to the individual but also to the group, and a youth is considered mature once he view personal success as being synonymous with the success of the family or group.
Face is expressed through hospitality, generosity and loyalty to family or particular group. A Kuwaiti spends his life building his personal and social face and the sense of face lies behind many social behaviors in Kuwait.
There are also more formal Diwaniyah, which specialize in particular interests, such as politics or science.

The large revenues from oil production allowed independent Kuwait to build up its economic infrastructure and institute educational and social welfare programs. Surrounded by three major Middle Eastern powers, the main threat to the country came from the renewal of Iraqi territorial claims over Kuwait which date back to Kuwaiti independence. Kuwait had been seriously threatened by Iraq in 1961, but Iraq was deterred by British military intervention. In 1990, no such assistance was available. Kuwait had given firm backing to the Iraqis during the Iran-Iraq war, lending some US$40-60 billion to Baghdad. Disputes over repayment and the exploitation of oilfields which straddle the (still disputed) border region between the two countries eventually led to the Iraqi invasion on 1 August, 1990.

    Kuwait
Kuwait is a relatively small country on the western shore of the Persian Gulf. It is located between Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq. It is slightly smaller than the US state of New Jersey. It is characterized by a dry desert climate with extremely hot summers. The terrain is flat to slightly undulating desert plain. Vegetation consists of low brushes and scrub. Before the Gulf War in 1991, many reptile species were found in Kuwait including lizards, house geckos, and snakes. The economic activities of Kuwait are varied. They include maritime activities such as ship building, fishing, pearl diving, business and trading between Arabian Gulf ports and those overlooking the Indian Ocean. Kuwait was also a stop for overland caravans between Persia and Mesopotamia enroute to the eastern and interior parts of the Arabian Peninsula. Both the maritime and trade activities had a positive impact on Kuwaiti society. Oil was discovered in Kuwait in 1938 by the Kuwait Oil Company but because of World War II, it was not exported until 1946. When the oil began to flow, the Kuwaiti economy flourished taking the country from poverty level to great wealth. Kuwait remained a British protectorate until 1961 when it became an independent nation. Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al Shaba became the leader of Kuwait. However, Iraq claimed the emirate in the early 1960's and it again received British protection. References: http://www.arab.net/kuwait/kt_society.htm

In that time Sheikh Mubarak Al Sabah or "Mubarak the Great" (r.1896-1915) enters into an agreement with Great Britain, which effectively established Kuwait as an autonomous British protectorate with a semi-autonomous position for the country. Mid-1930s Kuwait began the development of its petroleum industry, the basis of the country's modern prosperity. On June 19, 1961 Kuwait gained full independence from Britain and in 1963 it became a member of the United Nations.
