Interview with Natasa Ilic
Natasa Ilic (b. 1970) is a free-lance curator and critic based in Zagreb,
Croatia. Ilic is a member of the independent curatorial collective "What, How & for Whom /WHW" and directs Galerija Nova in Zagreb. With René Block, she currently curates "Cetinje Biennial V," Montenegro (July-Sept 2004). What do you think is behind all this Balkan hype? There were three exhibitions, one in Vienna, one in Graz, and one in Kassel. Natasa Ilic: AE: NI: Of course, there is the element of bad conscience, but it is primarily related to the political, economical development there. AE: As a kind of compensation? NI: Yes. AE: What about the art scene of the Balkans? Is it better, more vivid than before? NI: For example, at the moment there are really four generations in the Croatian art scene and there is communication between them. So the Croatian art scene is certainly very alive at the moment. Probably for some countries in which contemporary art started, in a way, with the fall of the Berlin Wall, I would say that they also collected and gathered some experience in this last decade.
AE: So you would connect it to this political change and the opening up of possibilities?

This was the high point of the suffering that Kurds were going through for almost a century. Will the world come to their aid? Unfortunately, no. Western and regional countries have always used the Kurds for some political or economic interest. The world has left them, like the Afghans, in agony for so long. Were the Kurds you met preoccupied with possible U.S. or international action against Saddam Hussein? What hopes or fears do the Kurds have about the possibility of war? The Kurds have suffered at the hands of many nations, but there has been a lot of progress in Kurdistan since your last visit in 1980. Can you describe some of the changes? I was so surprised to see these changes during my last trip in Iraq. Kurdish people there have done a great job of organization. I thought I could help them to create a free media, to rebuild a cultural identity, like I did with AINA [a non-profit organization] in Afghanistan. It seems to me that Kurdish people there are getting more and more "mature" and ready for a new state. Hopefully very soon, Kurdistan will be one of the nations of the world. They are ready for this.

Iraq: Presidential Choice Is Landmark For Kurds By Kathleen Ridolfo 6 April 2005 (RFE/RL) The Iraqi National Assembly elected Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) head Jalal Talabani to be the country's new president on 6 April. Talabani's rise is a milestone in the history of Iraq's long-oppressed Kurds. He is the first Kurd ever to fill the seat, and has worked hard to maintain Kurdish autonomy within a federal Iraq. A Kurdish patriot, Talabani had a history of organization and at times confrontation to oppose the regime of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. But he has worked alongside fellow Kurd Mas'ud Barzani to maintain autonomy within a postwar federal Iraq. "It is a right of the Kurdish people to demand that the region of Kurdistan, as it is known in terms of geography and history, become the region over which the Kurdish people would exert their federal rule," Talabani told RFE/RL's Radio Free Iraq (RFI) on 24 February. "We believe that these [currently] existing problems can also be solved by consensus and dialogue, in a brotherly political way. There is no problem in Iraq that would be unsolvable, in our opinion." (see also: Iraq's New President Talks to Radio Free Iraq) Talabani has played a crucial role in the postwar administration of Iraq, holding a seat on the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council and acting as rotating president on the council in November 2003.
