THE KURDS
The Kurdish nation is a divided nation cut up into five parts and distributed among the states of Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and the former Soviet Union. According to history books and historians, the word "kurds" is very old and it goes back in time to 2000 B.C. The Kurdish population is estimated to be 35 million. The Kurdish people have their own language, culture, and unique historical development. In terms of ethnic origin, the Kurds belong to the Indo European family of nations.
According to history books and historians the word "KURD" is very old and it goes back in time to 2000 B.C. Kurds historical neighbours are Assyrians to the south, Persians to the east, Armenians to the north and Greeks to the west. The Kurdish Language is a branch of the Indo-European family of languages which includes Kurdish, Persian, Baluchi, Urdu, Afgani, and most of the European languages such as German, Russian, Italian, Spanish, French, Scandinavian languages, and English. Many scholars and linguists believe that the Kurdish language, because of its isolation and seclusion in the numerous closed valleys and mountain slopes of the Kurdistan Highlands, has preserved many of its original characteristics; it is considered to be pure and to resemble closely the original primitive Aryan tongue. Modern Kurdish is divided into two major groups: 1)The Kurmanji group with it's two main dialects: North Kurdish (Kurmanji) and

I am delighted to be here and thank Dr. Shafeeq Al Ghabra and the Kuwait Information Office for hosting this gathering. I have informally titled my presentation: "Iraqi Kurdistan: Crucible for Democracy and Model for a Post-Saddam Iraq." In the short time I have, I would like to cover the following topics: a quick review geography and demographics, a discussion of the evidence for democratization, civil society building and human rights training, some first hand observations  about the Oil for Food Program and reflections on challenge of  accessing Iraqi Kurdistan. Let me begin by stating that I have just returned from a three week visit to Iraqi Kurdistan. Most of my time was spent in Erbil, Dahuk, and Sulaimania. But I also took various extended road trips to towns and villages in the areas around these three cities. First, a brief a review of geography and demographics.

Kemal Burkay During recent years the Kurdish question has reappeared, more intensely than before, on the international agenda. For years, this question has been of fundamental concern to the countries of the region, and it has led to extensive internal controversies and economic and social crises. In order to further an understanding of the Kurdish question in its present dimensions, a summary of its historical and geographical background is necessary. Language, Religion, and History The Kurds are, together with the Arabs, Persians, and Armenians, one of the most ancient peoples of the Near East. The country they inhabit is called Kurdistan. The Kurds have their own language, Kurdish. Kurdish is a member of the Indo-European family of languages; like Persian, Afghan, and Beluchi, it is one of the Iranian languages. Kurdish is unrelated to the Arabic or Turkish languages. Literary works have been written in the Kurdish language since the tenth century A.D. Kurdish is a lively and rich language that has managed to survive despite all the oppression and bans to which it has been exposed. There are hundreds of poets, writers, and researchers writing in Kurdish. Many dictionaries and grammar books have been written for the Kurdish language. Kurdish folklore also has a very rich tradition.

THE KURDISH PEOPLES
The following chart summarizes an extensive survey and evaluation of the Kurdish peoples and the languages they speak. I have followed the classification of languages and dialects used by the Summer Institute of Linguistics , as published in the Ethnologue , 13th Edition, 1996. (This was the current edition at the time of the research. Editions 14 (2000) and 15 (2005) maintain the same dialect and language designations as Edition 13.) The Ethnologue listings represents a revision of names and dialect groupings among the Kurds, based on later research than other sources used. This appears to be the most recent schema summarizing research on the Kurdish languages. Previous sources were not consistent, so accounting for some variations from this presentation. Observations and Findings with Conclusions follow the chart. This report has been updated several times since the original research, but the chart remains the same. Dr. Orville Boyd Jenkins

Kurdistan
From dKosopedia, the free political encyclopedia. Kurdistan is a region with a group of people that flows into Turkey Iraq Iran , and Syria . The Kurds in Iraq have de facto autonomy. Introduction The Kurds are a people divided. Inhabiting an area that spans three time zones in five countries, the Kurds are a classic example of the principle of “divide and conquer” in action. Despite numbering almost 30 million, in every country they inhabit they are a persecuted minority, without exception. Were they all united in an independent Kurdistan, the resulting nation-state would be larger and more populous than most of its neighbors. Obviously, then, Kurdish nationalism is viewed as a threat by the other countries in the region. Instead, the Kurds are denied basic human rights, including even the freedom to speak their own language, and have been the victims of violence, genocide, and the only use of chemical weapons since the First World War. Fortunately for the Kurds’ oppressors, Kurdish unity is not on the horizon. Factionalism is rampant in Kurdistan. In Turkey, the Marxist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), led by Abdullah Ocalan, until very recently was waging a campaign of terror against Turks and Kurdish ‘collaborators’ alike. In northern Iraq, Mullah Massoud Barzani’s Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) fought a bloody power struggle with Jalal Talabani’s Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) for nearly four years, until a power-sharing agreement was reached in 1998. The KDP also frequently clashes with the PKK.

Robert Olson, Professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies University of Kentucky The main thrust of the Israel-Turkey Defense Pact seems to be directed against the Kurdish nationalist movement in the Middle East and particularly against the PKK in Turkey. The question must be asked why Israel and its support would want to take on the Kurds after so recently subduing the Palestinian nationalist movement and Arab nationalism: a struggle which has lasted for over a century. The answer seems to be that Israel perceives its future well-being and potential dominant economic role, fueled by American, European and international capital as being dependent on access to plentiful and reasonably priced water. The water is in Turkey. Most of it is in heavily Kurdish populated areas in eastern and southeastern Turkey in which the head waters and tributaries of the Euphrates and Tigris rise. The increased strength, growth and success of the Kurdish nationalist movement and, especially the PKK, present obstacles to Israel, its Arab partners and the West's need for access to the waters in Turkey. As a result Israel has decided to support more publicly than ever before Turkey's war against the Kurds. It is quite true that the defense pact is also directed against Syria and Iran as reported in MEI 526. In the case of Syria, Israel perceives the pact as being able to kill two birds with one stone. One bird is the Asad regime in Damascus and the other is Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the PKK who resides in Syria and Lebanon. By tightening pincers on Asad, Ankara and Tel Aviv hope to make him cough-up Ocalan and compel Ocalan to flee Syria to somewhere else where he could be more easily assassinated.

The Kurds and Kurdistan A Selective and Annotated Bibliography . Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1997. Compiled by Lokman I. Meho DESCRIPTION As the Kurdish question becomes more prominent in Middle Eastern politics, it is attracting attention from the media, the academic community, and governmental and non-governmental organizations. Swamped with questions from the press and academic departments, students of Kurdish topics have needed a comprehensive bibliography on the Kurds. This book meets that need. An introductory essay provides users with general background information on the Kurds and Kurdistan. With over 800 entries, the annotated bibliography provides information on the most important works about the Kurds and Kurdistan published from World War II through 1996. Emphasizing recent titles, the book focuses on English-language scholarly works. Arranged in topical chapters, the book opens with a section on general works, then covers travel works, history and archaeology, politics, minorities and religion in Kurdistan, society, economy, language and education, literature and folklore, and culture and arts. REVIEWS "A 24-page introduction to this bibliography presents general information on the Kurds and their nonexistent state of Kurdistan. This introductory essay describes the geography, language, religion, and tribal culture of the 30 million Kurds who are scattered among Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Azerbaijan (with the largest number in Turkey). This information is followed by a brief history of the Kurds since 1918 in each of the five neighboring nations.

On February 19, 2005, leader of organizations representing major nationalities and ethnic groups in Iran gathered in a summit to form “the Congress of Iranian Nationalities for a Federal Iran (Congreh Meliathai-e- Iran-e-Federal). The gathering took place in a London hotel. At the end of the summit, the leaders issued the following manifesto: MANIFESTO OF THE CONGRESS OF IRANIAN NATIONALITIES Iran is owned and belongs to all its peoples and nationalities, a right that they have been denied and taken away from them. We understand and feel the national injustice that Iranian nationalities have been subjected to, and therefore, we dearly honor the sacrifices made and the hardships endured by the sons and daughters of Iran for freedom and justice. We believe that the legitimacy of any government is derived from its peoples – this should be the case in multinational/multiethnic Iran as well. Whereas without the participation of all its nationalities to have the opportunity to rule the country and the regions that they live in, realization of freedom, development and peace is impossible; We believe the establishment of a federalist system of government on the basis of ethnic-nationalities and geography is the only political mechanism that is enduring, and allows all Iranian nationalities to realize their aspirations and the exercise of self rule in a framework of a free, united and a democratic Iran.
