Brower Power - A spotlight on young enviro activists by Michelle Nijhuis
David Brower
, a pioneer of the U.S. environmental movement, once said that his generation depended on young people "to shape us up before it's too late."
Though Brower former executive director of the Sierra Club, founder of Friends of the Earth and the Earth Island Institute passed away in 2000, his legacy lives on: He established the Brower Fund, which cultivates new environmental leaders through the annual Brower Youth Awards . Award winners aged 13 to 22 are chosen by a panel of activists organized by the Earth Island Institute. They get a $3,000 prize, and ongoing advice and mentoring from top environmental activists.
This year's six winners are diverse in their activities; they're defending old-growth forests, promoting clean energy, helping get environmental protection back onto the national agenda and, of course, doing all they can to shape up their elders.

Throughout history people in nearly every culture have decorated or altered their bodies. The reasons are as varied as the patterns and processes: they seek to define themselves and their positions in society, to declare their allegiance to a god or to a cause, to conform to the customs of a group or to shock or entertain. From body painting to piercing to scarification, from tattoos to plastic surgery, from the Bronze age to the computer age, this film explores and celebrates the stunning diversity of body art. 2000. 50 min. South Africa offers an unparalleled wealth of culture, wildlife, and landscapes. From the dawn of human life to the recent history of apartheid to the new African era, South Africa is a country with a rich human history. Excellent game parks and reserves are home to a vast array of animals and birds. South Africa's diverse landscapes range from the arid and mesmerizing emptiness of the Kalahari Desert to splendid coastlines graced with gorgeous beaches. The debate has never been so intense over what archaeologists believe signals the dawn of human culture. Recent discoveries suggest that the earliest stages of human evolution were played out in sub-Saharan Africa. The famous early-man sites of Sterkfontein and Swartkrans have been designated a World Heritage Site named the Cradle of Humankind. The origins of the San (Bushman) people are uncertain, but archaeologists have traced their ancestors back more than 50,000 years. The ancient people left beautiful images on rock faces, evidence of their daily lives and a complex spiritual world.

    Jackson at Live 8?
By Guardian Unlimited Arts and culture Imogen Tilden, arts editor Michael Jackson's rehabilitation might be sooner than anyone could have predicted. Sunday's papers reported that Jackson is 'frantic' to appear at the Philadelphia concert. Interviewed today on London's radio station Capital FM, promoter Harvey Goldsmith confirmed that they would certainly 'consider' adding Jackson to the bill, if approached by the singer. Goldsmith added: "Whether it's appropriate or not is another issue, whether he's in a fit state to work is another issue, whether he can work is another issue and whether he can work live is another issue."

Introduction This paper, a series of notes on a work in progress, arose out of research engaged in at Emory University during January - May 2001 into a project called Home, tentatively subtitled "a contemporary art exhibition for South Africa with artists from the South Asian Diaspora". The paper sketched out my reasoning for the project, some of the historical and intellectual material I gleaned while at Emory, and changes I have made to the concept after interacting with this material. Following a research trip to the West and East Coasts of the US and to Toronto and the Caribbean I hope to locate additional artists and material for the show. Home is a project close to my heart, it is influenced strongly by my own background of being South African of South Asian descent and was sparked by a set of experiences in 1994, but only took shape as a project from 1999. The projects completion date is tentatively earmarked for late 2003 or 2004. Key obstacles embarking on the project earlier has included (most especially) the hard to resist opportunity of directing the One City Festival 2000 (which affected my deadlines for fundraising). I have also decided to hold the project until I am able to visit the South Asian peninsula once again - my last visit in 1970 was as a four year old and I have an extremely opaque memory of the place mediated through family photographs.

Approaches towards a Filmic Reconstruction of the Past within New Greek Cinema Since the identification of historical discourse as a mere variation of narrative structure and the subsequent dismissal of history's 'privileged' claims to knowledge, alternative forms of historical narration have been employed, in an effort to not only rediscover the lost relevance of history but also redefine and contemporise the discipline itself.
As a result, and for the purposes of a 'new' historiography, the utilisation of additional media and the employment of innovative approaches and methodologies has taken place. In the process, a significant level of fluidity and diversity has infiltrated the field, previously characterised by its overt rigidity.
The main objective of this paper will be to identify and examine a number of different stances towards the filmic reconstruction of the past, attempted by directors generally classified as belonging to the cinematic movement of New Greek Cinema. The interaction between the aforementioned developments and the cinematic landscape of Greece at the time will be considered, and individual approaches taxonomised and evaluated.
