Rethinking the Korean War:
A New Diplomatic and Strategic History
William Stueck
Shopping Cart Reviews Table of Contents
Introduction [HTML] or [PDF format] Search within this book at Google Print Fought on what to Westerners was a remote peninsula in northeast Asia, the Korean War was a defining moment of the Cold War. It militarized a conflict that previously had been largely political and economic. And it solidified a series of divisionsof Korea into North and South, of Germany and Europe into East and West, and of China into the mainland and Taiwanwhich were to persist for at least two generations. Two of these divisions continue to the present, marking two of the most dangerous political hotspots in the post-Cold War world. The Korean War grew out of the Cold War, it exacerbated the Cold War, and its impact transcended the Cold War. William Stueck presents a fresh analysis of the Korean War's major diplomatic and strategic issues. Drawing on a cache of newly available information from archives in the United States, China, and the former Soviet Union, he provides an interpretive synthesis for scholars and general readers alike. Beginning with the decision to divide Korea in 1945, he analyzes first the origins and then the course of the conflict. He takes into account the balance between the international and internal factors that led to the war and examines the difficulty in containing and eventually ending the fighting. This discussion covers the progression toward Chinese intervention as well as factors that both prolonged the war and prevented it from expanding beyond Korea. Stueck goes on to address the impact of the war on Korean-American relations and evaluates the performance and durability of an American political culture confronting a challenge from authoritarianism abroad.

The programs feature informal lectures by prominent historians on pivotal events from the settlement of Jamestown to the Korean conflict and the Cold War. The teachers are led in discussions, debates, interviews, and role-playing as they investigate the original documents that “transmit the voices of America’s past.” Teachers will find that the activities in this workshop can be adapted and used in their own classrooms. The topics relate to programs from Annenberg Media’s instructional series A Biography of America, which can be viewed in coordination with this workshop.

The War in Korea and later in Vietnam had an adverse effect back home. As the War went on, public opinion went against the War. America which had entered the War to get rid of ’commies’ was not very confident any more, due to the strong anti-war sentiments at home.

It is about the zealous account of African Americans standing up and being counted as defenders of LIBERTY. This LIBERTY encompasses a vision of basic human rights connected with justice as accorded to all other peoples seeking freedom both inside and outside the territorial bounds of America. American history, at its best, is filled with records of the early colonial settlers searching for a place where the principles of freedom could be expressed and practiced. We are all familiar with the many written proposals, oral discourses, and constitutional provisions which evolved from their democratic ideas. The vibrancy of their words were later put into resolutions which were incorporated into our U. S. Constitution. The early settlers of America spent arduous hours creating a national document which would hopefully spell out the basic ingredients necessary to sustain a unified democracy within this land. From the beginning, these pioneers wanted to establish a worthy place free of restrictions which would not subvert or obstruct the basic foundations of a viable democratic society. Educational, political, social, and religious freedoms were some of the known necessities for the real American way of life in this new country.

... Capital Cities Korean War During the early part of the 1900s, Japan seized control of Korea. Japan kept control of its Korean neighbor for over 35 years with often harsh policies and an attempt to eradicate Korean culture in favor of Japanese ideas and ways. As the end of World War II drew to a close, the allied leadership promised the Korean people that after Japan was defeated, Korea would be able to regain its independence. However, the former Soviet Union shared a border with Korea, and the USSR wanted a to expand into Korea themselves. So the USSR communist regime under Joseph Stalin declared war on Korea and invaded it just shortly before Japan surrendered to the United States. After the World War II surrender, Japanese troops did not immediately leave Korea. So United States officials met with the officials of the USSR to decide on how to remove Japanese troops from Korea. The United States agreed to Soviet occupation of the northern part of Korea with the U.S. occupying the southern part. The dividing line was the 38th parallel of north latitude. The southern part was called the Republic of Korea and the northern portion the People's Democratic Republic of Korea. Efforts to reunify Korea failed. North Korean forces invaded South Korea in 1950 and President Harry Truman authorized the use of American land, sea, and air forces in Korea to defend South Korea. Shortly thereafter, 15 other nations that belonged to the United Nations joined the U.S. in fighting the North Koreans.

    n. A conflict that lasted from 1950 to 1953 between North Korea, aided by China, and South Korea, aided by United Nations forces consisting primarily of U.S. troops.
var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Encyclopedia Korean War, conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953. At the end of World War II, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel into Soviet (North Korean) and U.S. (South Korean) zones of occupation. In 1948 rival governments were established: The Republic of Korea was proclaimed in the South and the People's Democratic Republic of Korea in the North. Relations between them became increasingly strained, and on June 25, 1950, North Korean forces invaded South Korea. The United Nations quickly condemned the invasion as an act of aggression, demanded the withdrawal of North Korean troops from the South, and called upon its members to aid South Korea. On June 27, U.S. President Truman authorized the use of American land, sea, and air forces in Korea; a week later, the United Nations placed the forces of 15 other member nations under U.S. command, and Truman appointed Gen. Douglas MacArthur supreme commander.
