GOLDSEA
ASIAMS.NET ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES Is Corean (Korean) Cinema the New HK Cinema? t the peak of its Golden Era between the mid-80s and early-90s Hong Kong cinema was defending nearly half its domestic box office turf against Hollywood imports, thanks to an unusual concentration of mega-talents like John Woo, Chow Yun-Fat, Jackie Chan and Tsui Hark. No other film industry in the world had been able to claim that for a half century. What's more, some HK kung-fu and gangster flicks outdrew Hollywood thrillers in many international markets.
Corean heartthrob Won Bin
Hollywood's strategy for coping with the HK threat? Simple and devastatingly effective buy up the biggest box-office draws. The result has been an epic shift: the top HK talents have been reduced mostly to coolie-ing on Hollywood formulaics while HK cinema has become a parched gulch with bounding tumbleweeds and half-hinged screen doors banging forlornly with every hot gust.
Corean American Shiri star Kim Yoon-jin
But just as Asian Americans resigned themselves to having screen images hijacked by a remarkably Asian-unfriendly Hollywood, Corean cinema began throwing off heat. Beginning in the early 90s a hardy new generation of Corean filmmakers made themselves fixtures at the award ceremonies of Cannes, Venice and other international film festivals. By the turn of the century Corea's Pusan Film Festival emerged as Asia's premiere celluloid bazaar. But that was small potatoes, not enough to catch the notice of an industry whose real lifeblood is box office.

Remarks at the Smithsonian Institution
Korean American Centennial Commemoration Event
Thursday, December 4, 2003
Thank you for inviting me to speak today. It is such an honor to be here at the Smithsonian, an institution that does such a wonderful job of recording the past, present and future. What a great place to learn and share. My mother who died 20 years ago would be so proud to know that I am the first Korean American Director of the Women's Bureau. She would never have dreamed that her little girl born in the horse year could have attained so much. In fact, she waited two weeks before announcing my birth, and by doing this, she could then say I was born in the year of the goat - a more tame domestic animal that men would prefer. She wanted to make sure I would find a good husband! So my life was not about finding a career or even a job when I was young. But I found that I wasn't much good at housework when I got married! I kept breaking plates! And I had too much energy to sit at home. So I decided to get a job, and I have never regretted working. I love work!

An exploration of Asian Americans in television, music, film, literature, and other artistic media. Discussion and analysis of music, films, and scripts. Asian American Studies 181: Readings in Other Literatures of Asian America
This course will consider texts situated at the "margin" of Asian American literary studies, namely Vietnamese American, Cambodian American, South Asian and Korean American narratives. Using a historical approach, we will explore how post-colonial theories can inform the readings of these texts, focusing on the themes of agency versus co-optation. We will closely examine the identity formation of the narrators and how they inform the current debates over identity politics occurring among Asian American literary critics. We will also address the issues of canonization and the intersection of gender, race, and ethnicity.

    GOLDSEA
    ASIAMS.NET ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES
    KOREA OR COREA?
(Updated Friday, Mar 7, 2003, 08:35:34 AM.) e at GoldSea choose to honor the more natural rendering commonly used in the English-speaking world prior to the Japanese annexation and colonialization of Corea beginning in 1905.
American and English books published during the latter half of the 19th century generally referred to the nation as "Corea" as recently as the years immediately preceding Japan's formal annexation of Corea in 1910. An 1851 map of East Asia by Englishman John Tallis labels the nation Corea. The same spelling is used in The Mongols , a 1908 history of the Mongol race by Jeremiah Curtin, the world's foremost Asia scholar of the day, as well as in several books by American missionaries published between 1887 and 1905.
Japan's annexation of Corea didn't become formal until 1910, but for all practical purposes Japan had become the power that regulated Corea's relations with the outside world in 1897 when it defeated China in a war over Japan's ambition to exercise control over Corea. The only other power willing to contest Japan's supremacy in the Corean peninsula was Russia. When it was easily defeated by Japan at Port Arthur in 1905, the annexation of Corea became a fait accompli. Anxious to avoid a costly Pacific conflict, President Wilson ignored the pleas of a delegation of Corean patriots and their American missionary supporters and turned a blind eye to Japan's acts of formal annexation and colonization of Corea. During that period Japan mounted a campaign to push for the "Korea" useage by the American press. Why? For one of Japan's prospective colonies to precede its master in the alphabetical lineup of nations would be unseemly, Japanese imperialists decided.
