Health Problems in Asian American/Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian Women
Who are Asian American/Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian women in the United States? Asian American/Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiian women represent one of the fastest-growing and most diverse populations of women in the United States. Asian Americans represent a number of groups, including women from Vietnamese, Korean, Asian Indian, Japanese, Filipino, Cambodian, Laotian, and Chinese descent. Among Pacific Islanders are women who are Hawaiian, Samoan, Guamanian, Tongan, and Fijian. So, this population has a vast array of languages and cultures. Some of these women are 4th and 5th generation Asian Americans, while 75% are recent immigrants and refugees. Native Hawaiians and American Samoans are part of the Asian-American population, but they are native to this country, not immigrants. Cineaste Publishers Inc. Used in the UCB Media Resources Web site with permission. What is Asian American Cinema, anyway?" The question came from a colleague in the discussion group that had formed to discuss a film and video series I had programmed for the Institute for Cinema and Culture at the University of Iowa, and the question was directed at me. "What are you going to say in your article," asked the filmmakers who knew I was attempting to answer this question. "How are you defining Asian American Cinema?," asked my friends on other campuses, themselves struggling to answer the same question. "I don't know," I replied. "The only thing I do know is that my students are helping me to redefine 'Asian American Cinema' every week, and I'm sure that any answer I give today I will abandon before the end of the semester." The term 'Asian American Cinema,' which includes works in video and film, implies first of all that there is such a thing as Asian American Culture. But is there such a thing as a unified Asian American Culture? Of course, the term culture is itself a slippery one - is there such a thing as American Culture, for example? Europeans might say yes; many Americans, especially people of color, would say no.

    • First recorded settlement of Filipinos in America. They escape imprisonment aboard Spanish galleons by jumping ship in New Orleans and fleeing into the bayous.
    • First recorded arrival of an Asian Indian in the United States.
    • China is defeated by the British Empire in the first Opium Warresulting in Treaty of Nanjing whereby China is forced to payindemnities of 21 million silver dollars, cede the island of Hong Kong and open five ports to foreign commerce. As a result peasant farmersare heavily taxed.
A series of floods and crop failures in southern China lead to poverty and threat of famine among peasant farmers.
    • Three Chinese students arrive in New York City for schooling. One of them, Yung Wing graduated from Yale in 1854 becoming the first Chinese to graduate in the United States.
    • Strike of gold at Sutter's Mill, CA, draws Chinese immigrants to WestCoast to mine gold. Many arrive as indentured servants during theCalifornia Gold Rush. The bulk of Chinese immigrants come later as acheap source of labor to work the railroads, mines and in other industries.
    • California imposes a Foreign Miner's License Tax, collecting $3 a month from every foreign miner who did not desire (or was prohibited by law) to become a citizen. The purpose of this tax was to reduce the number of Chinese immigrating to California as well as to discourage Chinese from mining for gold (although they did not pose a great threat to white miners since they usually worked deserted claims).

If you know of any other books or related resources that should be included, please let us know DEAR JUNO by Soyung Pak, illustrated by Susan Kathleen Hartung (Viking, 1999). Juno can't wait to read the letter from his Korean grandmother, but he doesn't know how to translate the Korean words. From little clues tucked inside the letter, Juno knows some of Grandmother's news anyway. When it's time to write her back, he must figure out how to communicate even though she doesn't read English. This is the first picture book for both the author and the illustrator. Ages 4-up. F IS FOR FABULOSO by Marie G. Lee (Avon, 1999). Jin-Ha's teachers assume she must be performing amazing well in math class because . . . well, don't all Asian Americans? But in this stereotype-busting story, they're wrong. Jin-Ha is smart, but it doesn't come naturally to her, and having a bad teacher just makes matters worse. But when she lies to her immigrant parents about the F on her test, will a bully turn friend? And will Jin-Ha ever manage to set things right? A sweet, fairly quiet, sometimes funny novel. Ages 10-up.

A scene from the film ¡°Tie a Yellow Ribbon¡± The issue of identity has always been at the core of artworks by many adoptees. Joy Dietrich, a Korean adoptee filmmaker in her mid-30s, has confined the issue of identity not only to adoptees. From her films like ``Surplus¡¯¡¯ and ``Robot Girl¡¯¡¯ to her new feature film ``Tie a Yellow Ribbon,¡¯¡¯ she has consistently focused on not only the identity problems of adoptees but also those of being an Asian-American women. Dietrich, who also works as a research editor at The New York Times, has just finished shooting one third of ``Tie A Yellow Ribbon¡¯¡¯ in the United States.
Joy Dietrich Question: Could you briefly introduce yourself to our readers? Answer: I was born in Korea, abandoned by my biological father in the city of Seoul when I was one or two years old. I lived in an orphanage for four years until I was adopted by my American parents. I lived in Texas for the first two years in the U.S. and then moved to Indiana where I stayed until high school graduation. I went to college in Ohio and after graduation, lived in Geneva, Switzerland and Paris for several years. I moved to New York in 1998 to do films. From 1994, I worked as an editor and reporter for various magazines and news services in the United States and abroad. Until today, I continue to work in the field of journalism to help pay my bills.
