Until recently, Korean Americans were largely invisible in the U.S. However, like many Asian groups they had distinct immigration waves, suffered from race-based exclusionary laws, and endured a pivotal event that caused them to reexamine their place in the American landscape. Immigration Waves
Korean Americans had three distinct waves beginning with 1903-1924. From 1903-1905, some 7,000 Koreans migrated to Hawaii as labor for the sugar plantations. Approximately 1,000 of these came to the continental US In 1905, Korea became a protectorate of and was later annexed by Japan in 1910. Japan then severely restricted further emigration to the US to stop the exodus of skilled labor and to stem the Korean independence movement. In 1924, the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act limited Koreans entering the US to 100 per year.
The period between the end of the Korean War in 1953 through 1965 marked the second immigration wave. It was mainly facilitated by an earlier law, the War Brides Act of 1945, which allowed spouses and adopted children of US military personnel to enter the US Today, it is estimated that one in four Korean immigrants can trace their lineage to the arrival of a Korean War bride. Also the end of the Korean War marked the beginning of American families adopting Korean children.

Asian American
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
An Asian American can be generally defined as a person of Asian ancestry or origin who was born in or is an immigrant to the United States The term "Asian American" is credited to the historian Yuji Ichioka who, in the late , used it to describe members of a new pan-ethnic radical political identity who shared common histories, experiences, and goals. In the United States, this term has widely supplanted the term " oriental " which was popularly used before the to describe East Asian peoples regardless of nationality, upbringing, or origin. Some have argued "oriental" is politically loaded and referenced a colonial "other" (see orientalism "Asian American", like " Hispanic American ", can not be defined as a similar group of people sharing similar cultures or physical features. For example, Indian Americans Filipino Americans , and Japanese Americans are very different from each other in both culture and physical features. Like the term "Hispanic American", saying that a person is "Asian" is not specifically referring to a certain lifetyle or culture and could refer to a wide range of different Asian ethnic sub-groups. Additionally, although the term "Asian" in the United States is most popularly used as a term to group peoples with physical characteristics resembling East Asian people, Asians from the

    San Francisco School Board, l905
In response to the challenge of changing demographics more than a century ago, the San Francisco School Board established a segregated Chinese Primary School for Chinese children to attend, including those who were American-born. By the turn-of-the century after Japanese immigrants had settled in the wake of Chinese exclusion, the School Board also applied the Chinese segregation policy to Japanese students. School superintendent, Aaron Altmann, advised the city's principals: "Any child that may apply for enrollment or at present attends your school who may be designated under the head of 'Mongolian' must be excluded, and in furtherance of this please direct them to apply at the Chinese School for enrollment." Throughout their history, Asian Americans have confronted a long legacy of exclusion and inequity in relation to school policies and practices, particularly during periods of changing demographics, economic recession, or war. In spite of historic, linguistic differences, distinct Asian nationalities have been grouped together and treated similarly in schools and in the larger society. The grouping of Asian Americans together, then, makes sense in light of historic links from the past to the present.

HOME June 21, 2005 Asian-American MTV MTV is planning 3 new channels aimed at Indian-Americans, Chinese-Americans and Korean-Americans. That's what MTV World is counting on as it introduces three new channels focusing on the growing population of young, acculturated Asian-Americans: first, MTV Desi, which will go on the air in late July; then MTV Chi, for Chinese-Americans, by the end of the year; and MTV K for Korean-Americans next year. The channels will not be merely tweaked reproductions of MTV India, MTV China or MTV Korea, three of MTV's 42 channels abroad. Rather, they will, like their target audiences, be hybrids, blending here and there and grappling with identity issues, mostly in English.
MTV Desi will serve as the prototype. Interspersed among Bollywood videos, electronic tabla music and English-Gujarati hip-hop , it will feature brief documentary clips profiling desis, comic skits about South Asian-American generational conflicts, interviews with bicultural artists and desi house parties, live. MTV Chi will mix up Mandarin rock, Canto pop and Chinese-American rap; MTV K will tap into South Korean hip-hop and the little-known but vibrant Korean-American pop scene.

Becoming Asian American
Second-Generation Chinese and Korean American Identities
Nazli Kibria $25.00 paperback 0-8018-7744-X (1 ctn qty) 2003 232 pp. Add paperback to shopping cart
Description
In Becoming Asian American , Nazli Kibria draws upon extensive interviews she conducted with second-generation Chinese and Korean Americans in Boston and Los Angeles who came of age during the 1980s and 1990s to explore the dynamics of race, identity, and adaptation within these communities. Moving beyond the frameworks created to study other racial minorities and ethnic whites, she examines the various strategies used by members of this group to define themselves as both Asian and American. In her discussions on such topics as childhood, interaction with non-Asian Americans, college, work, and the problems of intermarriage and child-raising, Kibria finds wide discrepancies between the experiences of Asian Americans and those described in studies of other ethnic groups. While these differences help to explain the unusually successful degree of social integration and acceptance into mainstream American society enjoyed by this "model minority," it is an achievement that Kibria’s interviewees admit they can never take for granted. Instead, they report that maintaining this acceptance "requires constant effort on their part." Kibria suggests further developments may resolve this situation—especially the emergence of a new kind of pan–Asian American identity that would complement the Chinese or Korean American identity rather than replace it.

Pane thnicity
Sociologist Dina Okamoto documents patterns of Asian American panethnicity by looking at rates of collective action, organizational formation and intermarriage. She looks at the ways in which labor market processes, such as competition and occupational segregation, affect pan-Asian efforts. Okamoto studies race and ethnicity on a broader scale as well as immigration issues. She also researches occupational sex segregation and how individual characteristics, such as marital status and whether or not one has children, affect women's occupational choices. Stereotypes of Asian American Students. ERIC Digest. by Kim, Angela - Yeh, Christine J. This digest discusses the various negative and positive Asian American stereotypes. It also explores how school practices and individual educatorsconsciously or unconsciouslymay reinforce them. Doing so has important negative social, political, and economic ramifications for Asian Americans. Indeed, while Asian Americans are often characterized as the "model minority" (Lee, 1997, p. 442), many have serious psychological and emotional concerns which are not being addressed. GENERAL STEREOTYPES S. Lee (1996) reported that high- and low-achieving Asian-identified students experienced anxiety to uphold the expectations of the model minority stereotypes. The students who were unable to perform well academically felt depressed and were embarrassed to seek help. Moreover, dispelling the Asian American universal academic success myth, the Educational Testing Service (1997) found that twelfth grade students from six major ethnic groups (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, South Asian, and Southeast Asian) had significant variations in their educational backgrounds and achievement. ETS also demonstrated how stereotyping has led to the neglect of the development of student services and support for the many Asian American students who are undereducated and have low socioeconomic status.

The asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) advocates on Many of the over 200000 korean americans working in the New York City area
    http://www.aaldef.org/about.html
Founded in 1974, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) is the first legal rights organization on the East Coast serving Asian Americans. We were founded by a group of lawyers, law students and community activists who believed that the law should be used as a tool to achieve social and economic justice for Asian Americans and all Americans. We believe that the laws in this country should be applied equally, regardless of race or ethnicity. We also believe that every American has a right and an obligation to be involved in the communities where she or he lives and works. Our aim is to build an informed and active Asian America that is involved in the civic life of this country.
What We Do Voting Rights Project This successful campaign followed our 1985 agreement with the New York City Board of Elections to provide bilingual materials and assistance for the first time to Chinese-speaking voters. Combating Anti-Asian Violence Redress for Japanese Americans Since its founding, AALDEF has been instrumental in the efforts to secure redress for the 120,000 Japanese Americans who were unjustly interned in American concentration camps during World war II. We have provided representation to former internees in redress claims, and submitted amicus briefs and provided testimony in support of redress to Congress and to the U.S. Commission on the Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (CWRIC). Throughout the 1980s, AALDEF assisted the legal teams that overturned the wartime convictions of Fred Korematsu and Gordon Hirabayashi, redress activists who protested the incarceration process in the 1940s.
