S. Korea pushes for second summit
'That promise must be kept and I believe it will': Kim Dae-jung SEOUL, South Korea South Korean President Kim Dae-jung has reminded North Korea's leader of his promise to visit Seoul for a second summit. North Korean ruler Kim Jong Il promised the South Korean president during a historic summit in Pyongyang last June he would travel to Seoul to help end decades of tension between the two nations on the divided peninsula. Last June's summit between the two Kims was the first of its kind since the peninsula was divided into the communist North and the pro-Western South at the end of World War II. It was the biggest step toward peace since the 1950-53 Korean War. But as the one-year anniversary of the June 15 summit draws near, Kim Jong Il has yet to announce a date, and tense ties between the United States and North Korea has slowed inter-Korean reconciliation this year. In a ceremony marking Memorial Day, the South Korean president said he had asked North Korea to tell him when their leader would be able to visit Seoul.

N. Korea warns U.S. of 'nuclear disaster'
Bush has labelled North Korea part of an "axis of evil" which he says threatens world peace By CNN's Joe Havely in Hong Kong and wire reports SEOUL, South Korea North Korea has warned the United States that it would be "grossly mistaken" if it chose to attack the communist state with nuclear weapons, saying such an act would result in America's own "ruin in nuclear disaster." The statement, carried on the official Korea Central News Agency (KCNA), comes days after American newspapers carried reports of a secret Pentagon review naming seven countries including North Korea as potential targets of U.S. nuclear strikes. It also follows U.S. President Bush's naming of the North earlier this year as part of an "axis of evil" along with Iran and Iraq. That sent relations between Washington and Pyongyang plummeting to a fresh low and the subsequent inclusion of the North on an American nuclear hit list does not seem likely to ease the chill any time soon.

South Korea indicts president's son
Kim Dae-jung's sons have come under the spollight for kickbacks Staff and wires SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) South Korean prosecutors have indicted the son of South Korean President Kim Dae-jung on charges of influence peddling. Kim Hong-gul was arrested in recent weeks after he allegedly accepted a bribe to get a lottery company a license. The president's youngest son reportedly received about $2 million from the lottery company and then influenced the government to give the firm a license to sell the tickets. Kim Hong-gul has not commented directly on any of the allegations, although he has apologized to the nation for any controversy he has caused the first family in his dealings with businessmen accused of financial misdeeds. The president's two other sons are also being investigated for possible influence peddling.

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (Reuters) Slovak police have recommended that a former Nationalist Party lawmaker and a colleague be charged with trying to illegally sell a sophisticated radar system to North Korea. The case involves efforts to sell Tamara radar allegedly the only system able to spot U.S. stealth aircraft to North Korea in 1998. Former Slovak Nationalist Party deputy Vitazoslav Moric and a colleague face up to eight years in prison if convicted, officials said. "The investigation is finished. We have given it to the prosecutor with a proposal to charge them. I expect them to agree with the charges," interior ministry spokesman Boris Azaltovic told Reuters. The ministry said the men bought the equipment from Ukraine in 1998 and tried to ship it to North Korea after falsifying export permits that said the end user of the systems would be the Slovak army.

South Korea denies warship entered North Korean territory
June 7, 1999

Web posted at: 12:13 a.m. EDT (0413 GMT)
SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) South Korea on Monday denied a North Korean report that one of its warships entered the North's territorial waters in the Yellow Sea over the weekend. North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said three South Korean warships followed North Korean fishing boats into waters off Kangryong on North Korea's west coast on Saturday before they were chased away by northern patrol boats. South Korea "committed a grave military provocation of illegally intruding warships deep into the territorial waters of the North side," KCNA said. A spokesman at South Korea's defense ministry denied the charge.

S. Korea's Hanaro, Thrunet end merger talks
South Korea has more than 8 million broadband users Staff and wires SEOUL, South Korea South Korea's second and third largest high-speed Internet providers, Hanaro Telecom and Thrunet, have ended their merger talks. Hanaro said Sunday it decided to end the negotiations after Thrunet was found to have signed a preliminary agreement with mobile phone company SK Telecom to sell off its leased service line operations. Hanaro and Thrunet have been talking about a merger since last November, as a way of competing with Korean broadband leader KT Corp. KT has about 49 percent of South Korea's 8 million-plus broadband users, followed by Hanaro with 27 percent and Thrunet with 17 percent.
No longer among assets
But Hanaro saw Thrunet's "secret" agreement with SK Telecom last week as a dealbreaker, according to the Digital Chosun site. SK Telecom signed a preliminary deal last Monday to buy Thrunet's leasing service division.

Racism in popular culture
I'm not sure if this was really done on the popular TV show hosted by David Letterman but I received a forward that may encourage an interesting discussion about racism in popular culture and be suitable for my Popular Cultures in English Speaking Countries class. I must say again that I find it hard to believe this was actually part of the show. I can imagine that some created their own top ten list as this is not an uncommon activity in America: David Letterman's Top 10 reasons why there are no black NASCAR drivers: (I bet his life will be miserable after the NAACP sees this!) # 10 - Have to sit upright while driving.
# 9 - Pistol won't stay under front seat.
# 8 - Engine noise drowns out the rap music.
# 7 - Pit crew can't work on car while holding up pants at the same time.
# 6 - They keep trying to carjack Dale JR.
# 5 - Police cars on track interfere with race.

Japan, S. Korea on alert for second N. Korea missile test
No sign of imminent launch, U.S. says
September 3, 1998
Web posted at: 1:27 p.m. EDT (1727 GMT)
In this story:
TOKYO (CNN) Japan and South Korea placed their forces on increased alert Thursday and pledged stronger military cooperation after signs emerged that North Korea was preparing for another ballistic missile test. There was no official information on what led Japan and South Korea to suspect a new launch, and U.S. officials said they had no indication that a new test-firing was planned. On Monday, North Korea test-fired a Taepo Dong 1 ballistic missile that flew across northern Japan and crashed into the Pacific Ocean. The first stage, or booster, landed in the Sea of Japan. It was the first test of the new missile, which has a longer range 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometers) than an older model and is capable of reaching all of Japan.

Last revised June 20, 2005 A Brief History of Tea Did you know that all the tea drunk i n the world, no matter whether it is white, green, red, brown, or black, and no matter where it comes from, is made of the leaves of the same evergreen tree or bush? Most people are surprised to hear this, and suddenly realize that although they may drink a lot of tea, they have never really stopped to ask where it came from or how it was made. In the pages that follow I want to take you on a journey through some of what I have learned about tea while living in Korea.
