CULTURE Language Korean is a Ural-Altaic language. It is related to Japanese and remotely related to Hungarian, Finnish, Estonian, and Mongolian. Although dialects exist, the Korean spoken throughout the peninsula is mutually comprehensible. In the DPRK, the Korea alphabet (hangul) is used exclusively, unlike in the Republic of Korea where a combination of hangul and Chinese characters is used as the written language. Religion Korea's traditional religions are Buddhism and Shamanism. Christian missionaries arrived as early as the 16th century but it was not until the 19th century that they founded schools, hospitals, and other modern institutions throughout Korea. Major centers of 19th century missionary activity included Seoul and Pyongyang, and there was a relatively large Christian population in the north before 1945. Although religious groups exist in North Korea, most available evidence suggests that the government severely restricts religious activity.

    27. About Korea: Culture: Performing Arts: Music
A detailed introduction to traditional Korean music.
    http://ailab.kyungpook.ac.kr/kmd/korea_music.htm
Imformation of Traditional Korean Music Traditional Korean Music K orea is rich in musical culture, and its music is distinctive despite tremendous influences from China. The same is true for Japanese music despite Korean influence. Evidence of these influences can presently be found in the existence of Koreanized-Chinese music called tang-ak in Korea and of Japanized-Korean music called komagaku in Japan. The Korean term tang-ak literally means music from T'ang Dynasty China. Similarly the Japanese term komagaku signifies music from the Koryo Dynasty in Korea. K M S og-ak, music for the commoner includes shaman music, Buddhist music, folk songs, farmers' music called nong-ak, a form of dramatic song called p'ansori, and an instrumental solo music called sanjo. In shaman music, the role of an inspired female shaman priest called a mudang is very important. The mudang plays the part of a medium between the visible world and the supernatural. Singing, dancing, and instrument playing are always involved. One of the most important types of Buddhist music is called pomp'ae, a song of praise to Buddha, and today preserved by only a few priests. To promote this music, the government has designated pomp'ae as an intangible cultural asset and is taking steps to encourage new devotees of the art. S ince Korea traditionally has been an agricultural nation, the life of the farmer has always had significant influence on the musical history of the country. The most interesting characteristic of farmers' music is its 12 different rhythmic patterns called shipich'ae, which are led by a small gong called kkwaenggwari. One of the more appealing types of sog-ak is the sanjo, an instrumental solo piece originally in improvisational style for various instruments: the kayagum, komungo, taegum, haegum, tanso, and p'iri. P'ansori is another musical treasure of leading importance in Korea and can be defined as song in drama, an indigenous opera-like production with one singer storyteller. Within the p'ansori, aniri is the spoken description of the dramatic content between songs, and pallim is the physical motion of the drama.

The first civilization in Korea was centered on the state of Choson which developed in the northwest corner of the peninsula in the second century BC. Choson steadily expanded until it came up against the more advanced Yen, a feudal empire which governed much of northern China. At the beginning of the first century BC, China, now ruled by the Han dynasty, attacked and destroyed Choson and governed the northern part of the peninsula for the next 400 years. To the south, a number of independent rival kingdoms evolved, of which the most important was the Silla in the southeast. In alliance with the Chinese Tang dynasty, which had taken over in northern China in AD 618, the Silla defeated their competitors and created a single political entity in Korea in AD 668 for the first time.
Around AD 870, a wave of rebellions broke out across Silla-controlled territory: this triggered the gradual disintegration of the Silla empire and a period of chaos in which rival forces struggled for control. The eventual victor in the early tenth century was the Koryo dynasty, once vanquished by the Silla, who allied themselves with the Song dynasty in China. The Koryo emulated the Song in establishing an advanced cultural and technological society (including the invention of printing in 1234, two centuries before its discovery in the West).

Country Info South Korea Introduction South Korea General Data South Korea Maps South Korea Culture ... South Korea Time and Date South Korea Culture Back to Top South Korea's homogeneous population shares a common ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage. National self-image is, on one level, unambiguously defined by the convergence of territorial, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural identities. Yet intense feelings of nationalism, so noticeable in athletic events like the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Olympic Games held in Seoul, revealed anxiety as well as pride concerning South Korea's place in the world. More than Western peoples and even more than the Japanese, South Korean individuals are inclined to view themselves as a tightly knit national community with a common destiny. In a rapidly changing world, it is often difficult for them to define exactly what being a South Korean is. To outsiders, the intense concern with identity is perhaps difficult to understand; it reflects a history of subordinate relations to powerful foreign states and the tragedy of national division after World War II. Problems of cultural identity are closely connected to the tragedy of Korea's division into two hostile states. Many members of the younger generation of South Koreans born after the Korean War fervently embrace the cause of t'ongil, or reunification, and believe that it is the superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, who are to blame for Korea's national division. The South Korean government's dependence on the United States has been cited as one of the principal reasons for the deficiency of improvement in north-south ties. While a majority of South Koreans remains suspicious of the North Koreans, many South Koreans also share the sentiments expressed by Kim Chi-ha: "our name is division, and this soiled name, like an immovable destiny, oppresses all of us." When parts of the wall dividing East Berlin and West Berlin were knocked down in November 1989, Koreans reflected sadly that breaching the DMZ would not be such a simple task.

    By Kim Tae-jong
Staff Reporter Sony used to be well known only for its electronic goods such as cassette tape players and televisions, but about ten years ago the company suddenly turned their sights to the entertainment business; music, games and movies. It might have been an unexpected move at the time, but their subsequent commercial success proves it was a good strategy. ``Compared to other manufacturing industries like shipbuilding, the entertainment business doesn¡¯t need immeasurable initial costs and investment in building equipment and infrastructures. It can generate profits simply based on human resources and their creativity,¡¯¡¯ Suh said. For example, the animation market has already surpassed the shipbuilding industry in output. But the local animation industry has only 0.4 percent of market share in the world¡¯s animation market, Suh said. The entertainment business, which is called ``cultural content industry¡¯¡¯ here as an umbrella term to refer to 11 different industries such as animation, movie, music, game and cartoon, has been a part of the government¡¯s 10 strategic industries. And KOCCA has been helping local industries expand into world markets.

    Korea Culture and Book Exhibition
Held in Dusseldorf/Germany (Feb. 9-21) A woeful state of national division on the Korean Peninsula grieved two youths of a former separated country in Europe and drove them to launch a non-political campaign for more understanding of north Korea. They were Mr. Andreas Niederdeppe and Mr. Armulf Piontek who worked together to arrange a Korean Cultural and Book Exhibition at the Dusseldorf Public Library, North Rhine/Westphalia, Germany from Feb. 9 to 21. "In the past, there have been no Korean exhibitions held without politics. They have been anti- or pro-Pyongyang presentations. We just wanted to provide non-political materials on north Korea to local people to help them understand another aspect of the country," said Mr. Niederdeppe. Both Mr. Niederdeppe and Mr. Piontek are fervent listeners to Radio Pyongyang. Mr. Niederdeppe is also a fan of south Korean KBS programs. "It's sad for us to see the two sides still confronting each other in the cold war structure." On show were north Korean music CDs, videos, insam, pottery, pictorials of Korean scenery, paintings, etc. Most of these items had been sent from Pyongyang in accordance with an agreement with the Korean Publications Exchange Association when the two Germans visited the country last May.
