Country Information Please Support our Sponsor The Republic of Korea (South Korea) shares borders to the north with the demilitarised zone (separating it from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea), to the east with the East Sea, to the south with the Korea Strait (separating it from Japan) and to the west with the Yellow Sea. There are many islands, bays and peninsulas in the Korea Strait. The volcanic island of Cheju do lies off the southwest coast. Most of the country consists of hills and mountains and the 30% of flat plain contains the majority of the population and cultivation. Most rivers rise in the mountains to the east, flowing west and south to the Yellow Sea. The Naktong River flows into the Korea Strait near the southern port of Pusan. The eastern coast is rocky and steep with mountains rising from the sea. . Ouick Facts

Evaluating Ancient Civilization
Planet earth is a place of ever-changing experience. Yet of all the diversity of living species only the humans have developed artificial civilization that dominates the environment and uses sophisticated means of communication with art, technology, and writing that are passed on to future generations. To discuss the ethics of early humans before the appearance of this evidence is very speculative and uncertain. Nonetheless to understand ourselves better it is useful to have some ideas as to our origins. Readers may disagree or agree about the spiritual aspects of our being and its source in God or a creator, but the long process of evolution is fairly well proven now by the scientific research of the last century or so. What does the nature of our bodies and how they evolved reveal about our values? The second law of thermodynamics indicates that the physical universe is meant to be used. As warm-blooded mammals our bodies must be constantly fed and protected from cold weather. To do this requires using resources of the environment. In our time excessive exploitation of the environment threatens our very survival, but in the ancient world with a small human population this was only rarely the case. The extension of childhood development and dependence on the mother for longer periods stimulated family values. The enjoyment of sexual relations at any time by creatures with brains large enough to make conscious choices brought greater emotional attachment, rivalry, jealousy, and social customs in mating. Much of human ethics is concerned with the morals of mating and the raising of children to understand the customary behaviors of the social group.

New Relics of "River Taedong Civilization" Found in Pyongyang Photo shows a site of a village (the period from the Neolithic era to ancient Korea) discovered in Richon-ri, Sungho district, Pyongyang. PYONGYANG, February 1 (KCNA) — More relics have been recently discovered in different parts of Pyongyang. Earthen walls dating back to ancient Korea were unearthed in Kwangdok-ri, Samsok district in the northern suburbs of Pyongyang. It is believed that there may be only earthen walls dating back to Koryo dynasty. But this time, stratum of walls dating back to ancient Korea has been discovered there. Pieces of the mouth and body of a top vessel and stone ax, relics of ancient Korea, were unearthed in the 1,053 metre-long lower stratum of the walls belonging to Koryo dynasty. Photo shows an earthenware vessel of the period from the Neolithic era to ancient Korea, unearthed in a newly discovered site of an ancient village. Also unearthed inside the walls were sites of two houses 50 cm below the surface of the earth. Stone ax, stone arrowhead, stone dagger as well as at least 50 pieces of top vessels were found in the site of an oval semi-dugout 6.8 metres long on its eastern-western side and 3.4 metres wide on its northern-southern side and in the site of a house which was so badly destroyed that only its eastern part remains.

Ronald Clayton: Reflections on recent travels in Korea Two years ago, I read a book by the art historian Simon Schama titled "Landscape and Memory" . This book is a meditation on the conflict between man and nature throughout western history. Schama leads his readers on a poignant but futile pilgrimage all over the western world looking for just one view of nature as it might have been without man's intervention. In the end the nature he reveals most clearly is human nature. Because the conflicts which define history are of course, all too human, nature is at most a passive witness to, and often a victim of human conflict. Schama's book seemed to validate my paintings but as a painter, I have a certain advantage... At first I integrated idealized landscapes from my mind's eye and memory into paintings that are otherwise abstract suggestions of industrial interiors. I wanted to set up a tension between the two by playing on the tension between abstract and illusionist pictorial space. Then in 1997 I visited Mexico on vacation. I went to the Yucatan and rediscovered for myself the ruins of Mayan civilization. I had previously spent time in American ruins of the

Chon, a lecturer of Seoul National University, focuses on two events during the Japanese occupation, to shed light on how Koreans began to identify themselves as a single ``people.¡¯¡¯ The two related events are the death of King Sun-jong, the last monarch of the Choson Kingdom, in 1926 and Sohn Kee-chung¡¯s winning of a gold medal in the marathon of the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. According to Chon, the former incident strongly reminded Koreans that they had lost the nation and that triggered a fresh wave of nationalism. The author writes that the modern media and pre-modern-style human networks created intensified feelings of national identity. Analyzing the second event, Chon notes that sports events, such as the last World Cup, have contributed to the idea of a people or an ``imaginary community.¡¯¡¯ In a nationalistic fever, all classes, including ``butchers or noblemen,¡¯¡¯ forgot their differences and felt they belonged to single identity or ``Choson people,¡¯¡¯ he writes. In the 2nd Chp. of the book, Huntingdon names the major contemporary civilizations: Sinic, Japanese, Hindu, Islamic, Orthodox, Western, and Latin-American. I assume Huntingdon classified Korea as part of the Sinic civilizaton. However he gives Japan its own classification which has evolved after emerging as its own sometime between A.D. 100 and A.D. 400. My question is, if Japan is listed as a separate civilization, do you think a strong argument could be made for Korea? Or, do you think Japan, Korea should be listed in the Sinic category. I'm not sure why I felt the need to post this question other than perhaps a strange nagging korean pride...

Rights History An ancient civilization much influenced by China. Korea was an ancient kingdom on a peninsula of the coast of eastern Asia. Like Japan, its neighbor, its distant past is legendary and is dated to 2333 BC. Its known history as a political entity dates to 57 BC. Korea has been influenced by both China and Japan. Its early philosophy and religion and system of writing came from China - though in 1443 a new alphabetic system of writing replaced the Chinese system. Its relation to Japan has something in common with that of England and Ireland. Japanese invasions occurred at several times in Korea's history (as well as invasions from the mainland, including China, the Mongols and the Manchus. A Korean dynasty was founded in 1392 which lasted until 1905. Like Japan, the kingdom of Korea tried to remain isolated from the western world and only broke down its isolation in 1876 when the Japanese, who had already opened up to the outside world, forced diplomatic relations on the Koreans. From this time begins the modern history of Korea in which the Japanese, Chinese and Russians extended their various conflicts to Korea. The Japanese influence in Korea grew until in 1910 they annexed the country. Until 1945 they ruled it as a colony, much as England had ruled Ireland. During this period Japanese filled all the important government positions down to village headmen. Some Koreans were taken to Japan as slave laborers and forced prostitutes during the 1930s. Their descendants are still there, and still denied citizenship.

Way Of Unification - Part 1 by Rev. Sun Myung Moon Section 1. Cycle Of Human Civilization 1. Korea And The Cycle Of Human Civilization 1) The Cycle of Civilization Zones and the Task Confronting Humanity If we look back over the history of human civilization, we come to realize that the ancient civilizations all began as tropical civilizations. In other words, the birthplaces of the ancient civilizations were tropical regions. The Mayan, Incan, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Indian, and China's Yellow River civilizations were all ancient civilizations whose birthplaces were the tropics or subtropics. Subsequently, these civilizations moved; but if we ask where they moved, we have to say that they moved into the region of cool-zone civilizations. Our present 20th century civilization undoubtedly belongs among the cool-zone civilizations. If this is true, how did civilizations begin in the tropics and then move into the cool-zones? If we look at the providence of nature, we can see that spring, summer, autumn, and winter follow one another in order, and even if we look at a single day we can see that it is divided into morning, daytime, evening, and night. If human civilization, therefore, should also have begun as a morning civilization (spring civilization) and then become a daytime civilization (summer civilization), then an evening civilization (autumn civilization), and then a nighttime civilization (winter civilization), why did it begin as a tropical civilization of the summer and daytime and then move into the autumn season of the cool-zone civilizations?

1. A Dravidian Language?
Q: What do you think about the theory today that the Indus language was a Dravidian language and that there is a connection between the Indus culture and today's South Indian culture?
T his is generally believed by those who are now working, particularly my friends like Asko Parpola, Professor Mahadevan, and the Russians Professors who have worked on this subject. They have all been working on the assumption that the language of the Indus people was Dravidian, that the people who build the Indus Civilization are Dravidian. But unfortunately I, as well as my friend Prof. B.B. Lal in India, have not been able to agree with this.
T oday the Dravidians are living in South India and we always say if they were the builders of the Indus Civilization and if they migrated from here because of some reason or the other, then something of that civilization they should carry into the south except just the language. But so far we have not been able to find any trace of the Indus Civilization in the whole of South India. It is there is Gujarat, it is there in Malabar, but not in the area where Dravidian is spoken today. Not a single evidence has been found.
R ecently when Asko Parpola came about three months ago to Pakistan, he said no Professor, what about Gujarat? Certainly in Gujarat we have got the Indus Civilization, right about to the mouth of the Narmada, right up to the mouth of the Tanti we have got this civilization. There is one more place on the Narmada we have got the Indus civilization, but not south of it. He said that this shows that people have been there. I said even then I will not agree.
