Trooper Walsh - 10 feet + and over 250lbs BillC - I was watching a nature show, wild things, and they did a bit on Komodo dragons. there were basically two types in the village on Komodo island. The wild, dangerous, stealthy Komodo dragons....and the slow, fat ones that hung around the villages. the villagers would feed the dragons, they were extremely tame, or at least they looked it, can Komodo dragons truly be tame like this? Trooper Walsh - Yes, They are just like people (but more intelligent), some are nice and others not so nice, they have good and bad days.

Seeing the Beauty in the Beast
Through his studies of the cardiovascular development of the reptile embryos, UNLV physiologist Carl Reiber gets an eggs-trordinary research opportunity as he plays parent to the world's first Komodo dragons hatched in captivity.
By Barbara Cloud
I n mythic lore, the dragon is a huge, ferocious, terrifying creature. In real life, the dragon is a huge, ferocious, terrifying creature. And if you didn't believe there was a real-life dragon, you haven't met Varanus komodoensis, the Komodo dragon, a beast that may not actually breathe fire, but that otherwise lives up to its "dragonian" reputation. "Komodo dragons thoroughly enjoy eating people," says Carl Reiber, a physiologist in UNLV's department of biological sciences who studies the world's largest lizards. "They are predators, bar none. They tend not to be able to eat full-grown adults, but there are numerous occasions reported when these animals have attacked children." Komodos, which are found in nature on the hilly island of Komodo in Indonesia, stalk and ambush their prey- usually goats, sheep, and other small animals, but sometimes humans. "They don't usually take them down immediately; it's not like a lion that stalks his prey and grabs it by the throat, suffocating it or destroying blood vessels so that it bleeds to death. Komodos bite their victims, and these animals have foul mouths. They have a bacterial and fungal population in their mouths that is absolutely horrible." So when a Komodo bites its prey, it infects the animal, rendering it greatly weakened within 24 hours.

Komodo Dragons This is a wonderful creature that lives in the lowlands, grasslands, and palm trees of Indonesia, In these islands they're about 2,500-5,000 Komodos. With a weight of 200 pounds and a length of up to 8.6 ft. This is a picture of the Islands of Komodo, courtessy of www.starfish.ch. History- Komodo dragons go as far back as 250 million years ago where they were just small little monitors. But as time went on some monikers grew apart from others and migrated as Southeast as they could get and eventuly ended up some where in Europe and South Asia. As you would think komodos would be related to dinosaurs. But they aren't related, alligators and crocodiles are more related to dinosaurs. As shallow water came in the lizards started there journey, swimming and walking to North Australia where on there way stayed in Indonesia. The komodos in Australia died out and in Indonesia there was huge and bigger animals. So they evolved to being about 28 ft in length! That's one big lizard, it's the biggest in the world. Adopt a Komodo Dragon! Primeval Power
With the appearance of a long-extinct dinosaur, the Komodo dragon is the largest living lizard in the world. The largest verified specimen reached a length of 10.3 feet and weighed 366 pounds, although this may have included a substantial amount of undigested food. More typical weights for the largest wild dragons are about 155 pounds. Although the Komodo can run briefly at speeds up to 13 miles per hour, it generally relies on stealth and power for hunting. A top predator with possibly important lessons for science, the Komodo dragon is a popular resident at the National Zoo.

Komodo Dragon Taxonomy
Order: Squamata
Family: Varanidae
Genus/species: Varanus komodoensis In 1992, Komodo dragons hatched for the first time outside of Indonesia at the National Zoo. Four clutches have hatched and the resulting 55 offspring may be seen in more than 30 zoos around the world. The Zoo's Komodo dragon can be seen in the outdoor enclosure behind the Reptile Building. Description
The Komodo dragon is the largest living lizard. The largest verified specimen reached a length of 10.3 feet (3.13 m) and weighed 366 pounds (166 kg). This may have included a substantial amount of undigested food. More typical weights for the largest wild dragons are about 154 pounds (70 kg). Although the Komodo can run briefly at speeds up to 13 mph (20 kph), its hunting strategy is based on stealth and power. They can spend hours in one spot, waiting for a deer, boar, goat, or anything sizable and nutritious. Monitors can see objects as far away as 985 feet (300 m), so vision does play a role in hunting, especially as their eyes are better at picking up movement than at discerning stationary objects. Their retinas possess only cones, so they may be able to distinguish color but have poor vision in dim light. They have a much smaller hearing range than humans. The result is an animal that can not hear such sounds as a low-pitched voice or a high-pitched scream.

These lizards live in one of the driest regions of indonesia with few permanent water sources

bring little moisture to the region....the trade winds which blow in from Australia also offer
little relief in the way of moisture. Temperatures in the Komodo National Park , range from a

This huge reptile, discovered in 1912, grows to lengths of 10 feet for males and slightly smaller for females. They weigh between 200 and 300 lbs. and reach sexual maturity in around 6 years.

The first visitors to Komodo Island probably were terrified by these prehistoric-looking beasts. The Komodo dragon, or komodo monitor lizard, is thought to be the source of Chinese legends of great scaly man-eating monsters, the dragons that are still featured prominently in Chinese folklore and religion. Classification and Range Komodo dragons are also known as Komodo monitors, or by the local Indonesian name, "ora." These giant lizards belong to the family Varanidae, which includes 52 species of monitor lizards. All varanids belong to a single genus. Varanus includes very tiny lizards only a few inches long to the immense Komodo dragon. Komodo dragons live on four southeastern Indonesian islands in the Lesser Sunda region: Flores, Gili Motang, Komodo andRinca. As recent as the 1970s, their habitat also included the island of Padar.

http://web.fccj.org/~dbyres/2011projects/komodo/dragon.htm
The Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis) By: Daniel Hiller The Komodo dragon was first discovered to the scientific world by accident. During the First World War a pilot crashed into Indonesian waters and swam to safety to a nearby island. What he didn’t realize at first was that this island he found was not safe! He soon found out that these giant lizards never seem to most of the world before lived on the island. Luckily, the pilot was able to radio to home and was picked up but no one believed his "dragon" story. Later, an expedition was formed and his reports were confirmed. Physical Characteristics Varanus komodoensis Habitat
The Komodo dragon mostly lives on the Komodo Island of Indonesia. These groups of islands are called Lesser Sunda Islands. All are part of Indonesia. Komodos live in self-dug burrows in the terrain. They like hot, arid grasslands on the island. The Komodo Island is about 520 sq. km. The highest elevation is 825 m. There is only one village on the entire island where humans live. It is called the Komodo Village and they practice Muslim. Komodos are not a real threat to the village because they know and respect the Komodos. They are lived together for hundreds of years. Diet The diet of the Komodo dragon is somewhat simple, anything it kills! They are carnivorous and primarily feed on Sunda deer. They will also prey on birds, snakes, wild horses, wild boar, water buffalo, and very seldomly humans! There has only been one death from the village people and more from tourists. The tourists have more of a chance of an attack because they don’t really understand the Komodo dragon like the people who inhabit the islands. Komodo will also feed on any kind of carrion (already dead meat). The young Komodos feed on insects and geckos while they live in the tees.
