Sick, injured and orphaned native animals Koala Is the koala a bear? Despite being called 'koala bears' for many years, koalas are actually marsupials. Bears give birth to well-developed young. Newborn koalas, however, are tiny enough to fit on your thumbnail. They are raised in their mother's pouch. Where do they live? Koalas are found between south-eastern South Australia and Queensland, but only where enough suitable trees have been left. The largest koalas weigh over 10 kilograms and are found in Victoria, while the smallest live in North Queensland and weigh only 5.5 kilograms. Koalas live for between 10 and 20 years. How do they get about? With huge claws and strong muscles, koalas are able to hold on tightly to trees. They have two thumbs and three fingers on each front paw, which makes their grip more even on each side of a branch. They also have a clawless big toe on their hind legs, which allows them to grip with their hind feet as well. Two of their hind toes joined together form a handy two-toothed comb, used for grooming fur and removing ticks. What do they eat?

Their large paws have strong claws that they use to get a grip on limbs. They can climb by gripping a branch with their front paws and bringing their back paws up to their front. Then they move their front claws up and repeat this motion. This motion is very slow in order to conserve energy. They also sleep up to 18 hours each day. The koala has a very short tail, so it cannot be used to hold onto trees. Female koalas have a pouch, a distinguishing characteristic of marsupials. Males are up to 50 percent larger than females and have a broader face. The Koala has been known to feed on a large number of eucalypt and non-eucalypt trees. However, most of their diet is made up of only a few species of eucalypt trees. The koala eats about one pound of leaves each day. This feeding starts at dusk. They obtain almost all of their water from the leaves that they eat. Koalas are found only in Australia. They prefer to live in eucalypt forests, since the eucalyptus tree is its preferred diet.

The koala grows to approximately sixty centimetres in height which is about two feet. The koala is grey in colour with bits of brown. A koala's favourite foods are eucalyptus and gum leaves. It also eat a few other types of leaves. Koalas do not have bad eating habits, like Tasmanian Devils for instance. From all of the information that gathered, I know that koalas have only one baby at a time. The koala is not a bear. They spend a lot of their time sleeping. White settlers thought that the koala was some type of wombat when they first saw it. Koalas and wombats are close relatives even though koalas live in trees and wombats, on the ground. If the trees are close enough, the koala can jump from branch to branch or maybe tree to tree to find fresh leaves. They will climb down one trunk and up another if the trees are too far apart. The koala runs as fast as it can to the closest tree if there's an enemy nearby.
