September 18, 2005 Kaiser Well, the mishagas in my life lately is that I'm having to give up the physicians who have helped me a lot over the last year because my current employer has Kaiser for their health insurance provider. The COBRA rules state that I can't pay for COBRA when my employer provides health insurance. I'm grieving the loss of these great doctors who I basically had to know Jesus to get in to see and then still had to wait 2 months. So, I have a CPAP because I have sleep apnea. Without health insurance, I pay $160 a month for a rental, so I called the customer service line to arrange for an appointment with a PCP so that I could get a referral to the sleep lab and get Kaiser's equipment. The call center person didn't know what a CPAP was and didn't have it in her list on the computer. I explained and she said she was sure the PCP would know. I got to the appointment, after I had explained to the gentleman on the phone on the clinic what my needs are, and the medical assistant walked with me into the exam room. There was a set up for a Pap Smear . This would be very funny if I were a guy. The medical assitant said, "So, you're here for your pap?" I replied, "No, other end. CPAP." He asked what that was. I again explained. He left and the PCP, a nurse practitioner came in. I went through the whole routine again. In the end, I did get my referral and went on my way.
