Got Gauge!
(With apologies to Phyl for stealing her blog name.) Marie asked:
Wendy, did you have any problems getting gauge with the Alchemy? I love
the Hourglass, but find the 19-stitch gauge a little odd. At 110 yards per 50 grams, the Alchemy seems like a fairly exact substitution for the original Noro, but did you try any other yarns? If so, what happened? I'm trying to come up with a less expensive substitute for the Noro and neither worsted nor aran weight yarns are working out.
First off, an interesting note (well, it's interesting to me): Every place online where I've seen Alchemy Synchronicity listed, it states 110 yards per skein, but on the ball band for the yarn that I have it states 118 yards. I got gauge. Stitch gauge, that is. With the recommended needle size a U.S. 7 (4.5mm). 19 stitches/4 inches, yup. Row gauge? Another story. I get 6 rows/inch, instead of the stated 7. But I'm never one to worry about row gauge. I'm compensating in the pattern shaping, and doing the increases and decreases with fewer rows in-between so that the finished length will come out all right. Know what I mean? But Wait, There's More

WHY KNIT OR CROCHET KNIT VS. CROCHET THE BASICS ... DISCUSSION FORUMS Basic Crochet Instructions The instructions below will show you how to cast on and to make a knit stitch, also known as garter stitch. If you follow them exactly, you’ll complete a 7" by 9" block, which will be great practice and help a good cause: Warm Up America! Learn how your block can be joined with others to create an afghan to warm up someone in need. With these basics, you can make a scarf, hat, pillow, bag or any number of projects. Beginner Knit Block What you need: - Worsted-weight yarn, any color or colors
- Size 8, 14"-long knitting needles
- Yarn needle with big eye
- Small scissors Casting On Step 1: Make a slip knot on the shaft of one needle. This counts as your first stitch.
Step 2: Place this needle in left hand. Hold other needle in right hand to control the yarn. Insert point of right needle, from front to back, into the slip knot and under the left needle.
Step 3: Hold left needle still in left hand, and move left fingers over to brace right needle.
Step 4: With right index finger, pick up the yarn from the ball.

YAY for me!

I'm not sure if the new knitty came out today or yesterday, as yesterday I was in bed throwing up with a migraine, but I was OF COURSE excited to see it today, and see my pattern in it! I'm dead impressed with Arisaig as well, it's really cute and the photos are lovely. Here's a link to mine though! BLACKBERRY! . I think it's a very good issue. With that and the new magknits as well there's certainly no shortage of ace free patterns about at the moment. Well, back to doing a trial balance!!

Thanks to everyone for commenting - I'd really like to go and read everyone's blogs and email you all but I just don't have the time!! Well I do have the time, but not enough time with the internet more accurate. We're having real trouble getting internet in our new flat, because we don't own it the landlord has to sign forms to say it's ok, and either he's forgotten to do it or they got lost in the post! Either way nothing is happening, and we're going round to see him later to chase him up - it's REALLY getting on my nerves now! I'm paying for this website and not even able to use it!! And it will have to be text only posts, because I can only get on the internet at work (I started a week ago!), and I can't put my photos on the work laptop! aaargh.

Knitted Hyperbolic Space
Bits of hyperbolic space are better crocheted than knitted, I think, unless you are willing to use double-pointed needles (which I am not). It's fun to toss these at students and ask (a) is the curvature positive or negative on these objects? and (b) which one has greater curvature?
I had knitted the above bits from the inside out, so to speak, by beginning with a small number of stitches and putting an increase on every stitch or every-other stitch. In summer of 2004, Ari Turner asked me what would happen if I knit them outside in, i.e. by starting with a needleful of stitches and uniformly decreasing. Here are the results: Taken together, Ari and I agreed they look much like Xmas ornaments.

I've started doing a small amount of web design work on the side, so I decided to get some more space for developing and designing. So, the blog, it is moving with me as well. ) And a BIG round of thanks goes to Becky and her fabulous web hosting at Pretty Posies . My blog has been hosted with Pretty Posies for almost two years, and it has been a completely awesome experience. I highly recommend Pretty Posies and Becky for bloggy space and web design services. She has been a supportive and encouraging web host, and besides that, she's a super fabulous knitter. ;) Thanks so much to Becky for all her support and inspiration. Okay! Enough of the talk! Knitting
by Jaya Srikrishnan, Knitting Designer, Palm OS enthusiast I am a software engineer, a wife and a mother but long before I was any of these, I was a knitter. I started knitting when I was a young child and have done so ever since. I am also an eternal list-maker but I used to keep losing my bits of paper. One day, when I was traveling on business, I had to make a phone call from an airport. I had lost the paper on which the phone number was written. So there I was, balancing my laptop on the little ledge below the phone, booting it up so I could look up the number! I felt foolish. This was before the era of the cell phone.
That drove me to get a Palm handheld and I haven't looked back. After that first one, I have moved up a couple of times and on one of those occasions, I took an oath. I swore off paper. I refused to carry notebooks or note-pads around with me. Everything was going in my handheld. That was easy when it came to work and my personal life but when it came to my knitting, I was presented with a challenge.
