89. The Dales Knitting Tradition
A site containing the history of the Yorkshire Dales knitting Tradition includesimages and patterns.
http://www.daelnet.co.uk/features/knitting/
With a history which spans four centuries find out how the Knitting Tradition had its origins in York and was forced into more rural parts, eventually finding it's way into the Yorkshire Dales, where it has become an established trade and artform.
Find out how the Yorkshire Dales inspires design of new patterns. There are a selection of cross-stitch patterns shown here along with instructions on how to create new patterns on your own computer.
This is an area which gives you an opportunity to view some photographic images depicting the Dales Knitting tradition and some of the people and products and settings involved associated in its long history.
Sheep have been domesticated in the Dales since the Bronze Age (3-200BC), so Dales farmers have had a very long association with this animal. Indeed, during the Middle Ages the Cistercian Abbey of Fountains, became the most powerful in England, its wealth based almost entirely on sheep farming carried out on lands it owned the length and breadth of the Dales. Fountains Fell overlooking upper Ribblesdale, for example, marked the western extent of lands owned by the Abbey situated many miles to the east. At the end of the 16th century, after the Dissolution of the monasteries, local sheep and the people who reared them continued to play a crucial role in the setting up and success of England's longest and most distinctive hand-knitting industry. Today, the Dales continues to provide inspiration and raw material for many textile craft leisure groups, including hand spinning, weaving and dyeing, embroidery, hand and machine knitting, crochet etc. Long may these crafts and their enthusiasts flourish!

Best Quote I Heard All Day
The road to tyranny, we must never forget, begins with the destruction of the truth. Bill Clinton
So what took you so damned long, Bill? Instead of immediately condemning Bush's total failure in responding to the Katrina disaster, you say nothing until last Sunday. Your successor is making your quote very viable indeed.
The Democrats had better get their act together and show some leadership in the Senate now rather than worrying about what they're going to do in 2006.
A Fine Ending
At last, the edging for the Field of Flowers has begun. I tried to take pictures of my provisional cast-on for those of you who have never done one; however they came out a bit dark. This is the best shot, where you can see the crocheted base and the laceweight stitches picked up and ready to be knit.
It's one of three cast-ons that I use. The other two are long-tail and cable. Don't need more than that in your repetoire.

I am having terrible problems holding the yarn in place to pick/scoop for my purl stitches. I've tried several methods of wrapping and finally ended up holding the yarn between my index and thumb, which is very awkward, slow and uncomfortable. This method is so fast for knitting, that if I can master the purl I will probably stay with it, rather than the English (wrap) style that I've always used. I hope you can help.

95. Imprint Knitting Pattern Webring
The imprint knitting pattern webring is intended as a promotional tool for authorsof hand and machine knitting patterns and content who sell their work
http://www.girlfromauntie.com/patterns/imprint/imprint_ring.asp
Imprint knitting pattern webring Purpose
The imprint knitting pattern webring is intended as a promotional tool for authors of hand and machine knitting patterns and content who sell their work directly to the consumer. By now, I think it's pretty obvious that there's a new sort of dot com bubble that has been expanding over the past couple of years. In addition to the knitting entrepreneurs who have been teaching and publishing their own newsletters and patterns for years, and selling them the "old-fashioned," mail order way, there's a crop of new designers and publishers who have figured that the Internet has provided a convenient vehicle for distributing their own visions. (The bubble isn't restricted to content creatorsa number of Internet-first, bricks-and-mortar later yarn shops have started up too.) Now, we all know what happens to dot com bubbles, but in the meantime, jump on and enjoy the ride. The idea for this webring was driven by three factors: First, obviously, I'm planning to start offering my own patterns for sale. Increased hits means a likelihood of higher sales, and a chance that maybe this scheme will pay for my web hosting, and perhaps a bit of yarn. Secondly, I know that there are a number of self-published newsletters and patterns out there. Some of these entrepreneurs, who earn their living in part through their knitting-related writing and teaching, have done a good job of promoting their products. But I can think of some who aren't quite as well known who could maybe use all the free promotion they can get. Thirdly, there's the odd dilettante who already has a full-time occupation but wants to try selling their wares on the side. Some of these people have been rather successful.
