It includes 8 of the 11 Line Islands , including Kiritimati (formerly Christmas Island), as well as the Gilbert and Phoenix groups and Banaba (formerly Ocean Island). Tarawa is the capital. The population is nearly all Micronesian, with about 30% concentrated on Tarawa. Languages spoken are English (official) and Gilbertese. Inhabitants are about half Roman Catholic and 45% Protestant. Fishing and the growing of taro and bananas form the basis of the mainly subsistence economy. Fish and copra became the chief exports after the mining of Banaba's once thick phosphate deposits ended in 1979. A member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the nation is a republic with a president, a cabinet, and a unicameral legislature. How many billions were spent getting those satellites up there? and then the images are free. Some fantasticly hopeful business models there! Not entirely - it was mostly your tax dollars that were spent, and the images you see for free I bet are a far cry from what military gets. So yes, you already paid for them , 100-fold.

I just get them free and give my money to a different government completely - hopefully to look after me in my old age. But that is beside the point. MSN hasn't done this for military reasons (presumably) and I am guessing it is at its own cost? Or are they using military hardware for this? Tapolyai Preferred Member joined:Oct 10, 2001

Kiribati is pronounced 'Kiribas' Kiribati's oceans stretch 3870km east to west. The country is composed of three main island groups: the 16 atolls of the Gilbert Islands chain; north of Fiji, the eight atolls of the Phoenix Islands, south-east of the Gilberts; Line Islandschain, even further east. Measured by land size Kiribati is a tiny nation, but its 33 atolls span 3.5 million square kilometres of ocean. Our work took us to the main island of Kiribati, its capital Tarawa . Tarawa is very flat a speed hump on the pot-holed road could be considered as Mt Tarawa. Tarawa is a group of islands surrounded by a coral atoll. In South Tarawa causeways link the islets, however for North Tarawa a boat is required to island hop at high tide. The international airport is at Bonriki (it is named 'Bonriki International Airport'.) in the south-east corner, which also hosts the new hospital and fish ponds. The central Government offices, Parliament building, President's Office and Resident, Central Post Office, Telecommunications Services Kiribati Limited (TSKL), Library and Archives, and various other official buildings are all on Bairiki islet. Betio islet, probably the most popular in Kiribati, has the port, shipyard and main power station. Betio also has a large number of WWII War relics.
