David and 24 others globetrotters gathered in Tacoma, Washington, and joined the Peace Corps Volunteers (PCV).
PCV Group K-25 departed for the Central Pacific nation called Kiribati [Kiri-bass]; previously knows as the Gilbert Islands.
Kiribati is a group of 33 low-lying atolls that extend 4 degrees north to 4 degrees south of the equator and stretch across the International Date Line.
After island hopping between Hawaii and Fiji, the PCV landed in the capital - Tawara, Kiribati.
Three-month of training started by sailing 19 hours under the Southern Cross Constellation to the island of Abemama. The island is located 150 kilometers south/south-east of Tawara. During this training period, David and several other PCV [I-Matangs - white people] had the opportunity to fly to Marakei for two weeks of training with the local PCVs. (It's a tough life, but someone has to do it…)
    Happy Birthday David
While on Marakei, David has been snorkeling on the reef. The coral ranges from 5 feet deep to over 30 feet. David talks about of hundreds of fish and is unable to describe the colors of the reef fish. While swimming in the morning surf, David described several dolphins were playing the waves.

Status of coral reefs of the world: 1998 7B. Status of coral reefs in the northwest Pacific Ocean: Micronesia and east Asia Jim Maragos, Charles Birkeland and Gregor Hodgson Abstract Introduction The Pacific basin has been divided into four regions with two in each essay. These divisions are based on the culture of the peoples who settled these islands, and geographic locality. Northeast Asia and Micronesia (northeast tropical Pacific) are covered in this essay. The companion essay covers Melanesia, in the southwest Pacific, and Polynesia in the east Pacific. There is a wide range of countries, from those with massive populations like China, to those with small populations like Palau; and from the wealthy, like Japan and Guam, to developing countries in Micronesia. Status of reefs in the northwest Pacific Reefs of the Marianas have generally deteriorated. Since 1981, about 5% of 113 sites around Guam have shown living coral cover over 50%. Coral recruitment has significantly decreased over this time, and over-fishing has reduced the size of fish so much that the reproductive potential of fish is only 5% of what it once was. The other reefs of Micronesia (Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands) are in much better health, with some damaged reefs around population centres because of sediment and nutrient pollution. Local fishing pressures are slight to moderate, however, there is clear evidence on some reefs of destructive fishing (use of dynamite which smashes corals in a circular area). On most reefs, there is the virtual extinction of giant clams, sea cucumbers, trochus shells, lobsters, and many of the top quality fish.

Also important in Kiribati are chants for one to four voices that honour particular achievements, such as initiation rites. The chants are not normally accompanied by dance. The I-Kiribati (as locals are known, pronounced 'ee-kee-ree-bus') speak a Micronesian dialect, although English is widely used in official communications. The local alphabet has only 13 letters, with 'ti' standing in for 's'. The missionaries got their talons in early, and the Kiribati Protestant Church today has over 28,000 followers and the Catholic Church close to 40,000. Religion is taken very seriously, and the further south you go the more you should avoid doing anything that looks remotely like work (even darning your beach towel could be frowned upon). Traditional customs and beliefs still survive, which is not surprising for a people who have lived so closely to a force as mysterious as the sea for so long. Pacific News member of Culture Gallery Introduction ANGLONESIA Anglonesia is a neologism used here to refer to Australia New Zealand and the United States in the Pacific (ANZUS). The progress from colonialism to independence in the Pacific Islands region (both north and south of the equator) has not brought an end to the influence of the former colonial powers. Presently, there are ten territories or dependencies linked directly to an extraregional government, and five others are constrained in their foreign policies by the terms of their free associaton compacts. Like these territories, the independent states are also affected by the political, security and economic policies of the extraregional powers. There continues to be an overlap of interests between outsiders and islanders, which is likely to persist even as more island stated begin to exert their influence more and more within the region as well as globally. KIRIBATI CULTURE The culture of the Gilbert Islands is beautiful, complex and diverse but yet contains similarities through the thirty-three islands that make up the Gilbert Group. Gilbertese culture is of necessity, something that covers a broad scope both in range and topic matter. What I have done in this Web page is to concentrate on the similarities of Gilbertese culture that exists from island to island and including our Banaban community now residing on the island of Rabi. I have also used the traditional term "Gilbertese" interchangeable with the modern term I-Kiribati. On this page, I have tended to use the term "Gilbertese" as in most cases I am referring to those cultural matters that are traditional but are still relevant to the modern progressive Republic of Kiribati. MANEABA The maneaba or mwaneaba is in the centre of the village. Next to the war canoe, it is the masterpiece of Gilbertese culture. Like the houses, it is built in a rectangular shape with the two ends differing somewhat. The maneaba architect is usually an old man who has learnt his trade through experience and from traditions in his family. Of course, he is also something of a sorcerer, because an undertaking like building a

Post-freedom politics were initially controlled by Ieremia Tabai, Kiribati's first president, who served from 1979 to 1991, stepping down due to Kiribati's three-term limit for presidents. Teburoro Tito's tenure as president, 1994-2003, also was curtailed by the three-term limit, though in his case his third term lasted only a matter of months before he lost a no confidence motion in Parliament. In July 20003, Anote Tong defeated his elder brother, Harry Tong, who was backed by former-President Tito and his allies. An ensuing court challenge which alleged violations of campaign finance laws could have unseated President Tong. in October 2003, a judge specially brought in from Australia to ensure strict neutrality, governed in President Tong's favor.

    About Banaba
An extremely remote isolated island several hundred kilometres to the west of the Gilberts Group. It is a raised atoll, rising several tens of metres above sea level. Extensive phosphate deposits were mined from the turn of the century until 1979. These deposits, destined for processing into fertiliser, were sold at below world market prices to Australia and New Zealand and helped 'kick start' these major agricultural economies. It is indeed curious that 1979 should also have been the year of Kiribati independence. The inhabitants, the Banabans, never quite saw the justice of shipping their homeland to Australia in bulk carriers in return for an inadequate number of small pieces of paper termed "Royalties" and were a constant thorn in the side of the British Phosphate Commissioners. When there was insufficient of their homeland left (ie the village areas were to be mined) they were resettled on Rambi Island in Fiji in about 1947 (which they had to buy with their own money!) where the community resides to this day. Some have returned to Banaba. In retrospect their treatment seems rather shabby, but I suspect that they would have fared worse under many other possible colonial regimes. [PS Does anyone know how the Nauruans were treated by the Germans prior to 1914? It would make an interesting comparison.]

When the Banabans had to leave their ancestral homeland as a result of the devastation caused by the phosphate mining industry they settled on the island of Rabi in Fiji. Unfortunately the traumatic upheavals which the community has been through since the beginning of the century, and particularly since the Japanese occupation, have resulted in an understandable loss of confidence and a questioning of their identity and future. The Rabi born, in particular, have little conception of their rich historical heritage and former culture. This book, therefore, has been prepared to provide the present and future generations of Rabi islanders with all that thas been recorded of their former way of life on Banaba from the time their forebears first settled it over a thousand years ago and created a prosperous, self-supporting and happy society numbering several thousand.

Kiribati was one of the Micronesian Islands in the Pacific Ocean. It lies on the equator south of Hawaii and Marshall Islands. Kiribati was so unique because of its own history, culture, people, food and their language. As for the history of Kiribati, it was beginning in the 18 th century when two British captains, Gilbert and Marshall, discovered the central and northern islands of the Gilberts group, which they named Gilberts. While the Gilbert Islands group became independent in July 1979. The majority of the coral islands of both Gilberts and Ellice consist of ring shaped atolls or coral reefs that surround lagoons. http://www.janeresture.com/kiribati_history/egan22.html th century. Also Kiribati consists of 16 small groups of islands, which are Makin, Tabiteuea Maiaki, Arorae, Beru, Abaiang, Tamana, Abemama, Onotoa, Nikunau, Tabiteuea Meang, Aranuka, Maiana, Tarawa, Kuria, Nonouti, and Marakei.
