Thomas Jefferson, among others, emphasized that the vitality of a democracy depends upon the education and participation of its citizens. While such active civic participation includes becoming informed about issues and voting in elections, it can take many other diverse forms relating to the United States government, its history, its people, and its neighbors around the world. For example:
  • Fannie Lou Hamer was an active citizen when she organized voter registration for Mississippi's black citizens during the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

Required Areas of Study
Social Studies
The aim of Kindergarten to Grade 12 Social Studies Curriculum is to help students to participate responsibly in a world of interdependent peoples, communities and nations. The Elementary Level Social Studies Curriculum recognizes that acquisition of social studies knowledge is not enough to equip our students to participate responsibly in the world as adults. Therefore, the four essential components of the social studies programknowledge, skills and abilities, attitudes and values, and citizen action must be considered when planning social studies lessons. There is a strong focus on each child developing a positive self-concept. Such development will be based upon recognizing and appreciating the value of each child and each child's family and culture. Learning about others and how to appreciate the similarities and differences among people will encourage the process of positive self-concept attainment. The following excerpt offers helpful guidelines for social studies education in Kindergarten. An important goal in the early years is to excite student interest in social studies and to capitalize on the eagerness of young children to learn. An effective ... social studies curriculum can help students gain a better understanding of themselves, as well as a view of the world within and beyond the walls of the classroom.

Nature of the Work
Working Conditions ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

Printable Brochure Kindergarten introduces children and parents to the public school experience. Setting the tone for all future learning, the kindergarten program encourages a positive self-image by providing age and developmentally appropriate learning experiences. Children enter kindergarten with different experiences and degrees of readiness. Using information from pre-kindergarten interviews, pre-school information and personal observation, the kindergarten teacher, in presenting the curriculum, selects and uses activities to meet individual differences and stages of developmental growth. Kindergarten children learn by doing. They need to be actively involved in the learning process, using all their senses to collect and evaluate information, to manipulate objects, to compare and contrast what they observe and to make sense of the world around them. Kindergarten children enter school with eagerness and enthusiasm for learning, but their physical development may impact their ability to learn. Small muscles are still developing while the large muscles are more highly developed. Hearing and eye coordination may not be fully developed, making auditory and visual discrimination difficult.
