Kindergarten Social Studies
Social Studies by grade: The focus of the Kindergarten social studies curriculum is on the child's transition from the preschool environment to the community of a K-8 school. Through group projects, discussions, classroom play, literature, and field trips, the children learn to interact positively with others while building the self-esteem, confidence, and self-control necessary for learning the skills and work habits to be successful learners and members of the School community. First semester emphasizes San Francisco Day School values, expectations, and routines as well as getting to know classmates, teachers, administrators, staff, and the wider student body. Second semester builds on this foundation and begins to expand the children's knowledge of each other's families and cultures. Children share similarities and differences through the study of their own development, their families (including holidays and traditions), and cooperative activities and projects as a class as well as with students at other grade levels.

Listening to and reading stories, songs and poems, dictation of stories, writing, copying, and the creation of original storybooks support emerging literacy. The use of sound spelling encourages the students to take risks and become writers. The young students learn to read by writing. Counting, sorting, and using math manipulatives helps the children solve problems. For the Kindergarten student, a hands-on approach to learning is most effective. Children are taught and assessed as individuals on their own continuum of learning. Progress becomes a personal journey for each child. SCIENCE In Pre-K through Grade 4 the Science program aims to build upon a student's natural curiosity about her world. The curriculum introduces students to the early tenets of the scientific method and connects the students' observations and findings with their daily lives. The Science curriculum in grades Pre-K - 4 is based on a co-operative learning format which sees the study of science as a way of knowing, technology as a way of doing, and health as a way of being. The Lower School Science program is based on inspiring a life-long love of science while teaching specific science skills and the use of scientific equipment in a hands-on and active approach. The program fosters environmental awareness and responsibility. Lower School Science prepares students for Middle School Science classes. Cooperative learning is an integral feature of the program. In class, students work in teams of three to four with team jobs and tasks shared by all team members. Classes meet in the Science Lab with the Lower School Science specialist.

ALL KINDERGARTEN Introduction to History and Social Science The standards for kindergarten students include an introduction to interesting Americans in history whose lives demonstrated the virtues of patriotism, courage, and kindness. During the course of their first year in school, students should learn basic concepts related to history, patriotism, national symbols, good citizenship, geographic location, economics, and the importance of following rules and respecting the rights and property of other people. History
K.1 The student will recognize that history describes events and people of other times and places by
a) identifying examples of past events in legends, stories, and historical accounts of Pocahontas, George Washington, Betsy Ross, and Abraham Lincoln;
b) identifying the people and events honored by the holidays of Thanksgiving Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, and Independence Day (Fourth of July).
K.2 The student will describe everyday life in the present and in the past and begin to recognize that things change over time. Geography K.3 The student will describe the relative location of people, places, and things by using positional words, with emphasis on near/far, above/below, left/right, and behind/in front.
