    Nature of the Work
Working Conditions ... Sources of Additional Information
    Significant Points
    • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
    • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
    • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

Kindergarten - Science - Animals and Their Needs (continuation) - Overview
This month there is one science biography lesson on Jane Goodall. The Core Knowledge February Scope and Sequence states that this month's science lessons should be a continuation of lessons started in January on Animals and Their Needs. Therefore, the teacher should complete any lessons from January that have not yet been covered. If all the lessons from January are complete, the following is a list of suggestions for extension activities. They are not written in formal lessons as they are merely suggestions for continuing the study on animals. They are intended as a pick and choose type of list. These suggestions do not come from the Core Knowledge content. Extension ideas.
    • Study how animals cope with winter weather. Explore hibernation.
Learn about the groundhog in honor of Groundhog Day! Shadows are explored in the Literature Lesson The Dog and His Shadow and a February Art/Craft Lesson.
Take a field trip to the zoo or a farm. Compare the different animals found in both of these locations.
Animals are mentioned in this month's literature lessons on Aesop's Fables and in the music lessons Carnival of the Animals and Old MacDonald.

    OVERVIEW
The "Seeds and Weeds" unit provides students an opportunity to examine and compare many different types of seeds. They look for seeds in their environment and they learn about the various ways seeds travel and plant themselves. Students grow their own seeds and observe the changes that take place during the germination and growing process. Finally, they observe the changes that take place when certain seeds are cooked, for example, popping corn and cooking beans for chili.
    SFUSD SCIENCE CONTENT STANDARDS
Using the materials in the "Seeds and Weeds" unit the following standards can be addressed: PROPERTIES OF MATTER CONTENT STANDARD 6: Students understand that matter can be described by its attributes. THE CELL CONTENT STANDARD 10: Students understand that living things are made of smaller structures. These smaller structures allow for living things to be adaptable, diverse, interdependent and undergo change over time. STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION CONTENT STANDARD 11: Students understand that living things have features that enable them to survive. Living things have similar characteristics yet are diverse in the way in which they adapt to their habitat

    OVERVIEW
The "Myself and Others" unit provides students the opportunity to look at themselves and their classmates, they gather information about characteristics such as height, eye color, and hand size, with a focus on their similarities, differences, and variations. Students realize and appreciate that although each of them is unique, they all share many similar characteristics. Finally, they experience the concept of growth and development as they think about themselves in the past, the present, and the future.
    SFUSD SCIENCE CONTENT STANDARDS
Using the materials in the "Myself and Others" unit the following standards can be addressed: DIVERSITY CONTENT STANDARD 12: Students understand that living things have observable and identifiable characteristics that make them different from each other as well as from nonliving things. HEREDITY CONTENT STANDARD 13: Students understand that all living things have life cycles and that within each cycle the young are similar, but not identical, to their parents.

There are a number of different resources available for loan from the Science and Health Education Partnership at UCSF. One needs to have an orientation and be entered into the SEP database in order to borrow items. To do this, call 502-6689 during the regular school year and make an appointment with the Resource Center Librarian. The orientation process takes about 15 minutes. The RC is not open during the summer, but users may be able to schedule an orientation depending on staff availability by calling 476-0300.

Kindergarten Science TOPICS: Course Description Text Testing F.O.S.S. is the F ull O ption S cience S ystem The Full Option Science System springs from a philosophy of learning at the Lawrence Hall of Science that has guided the development of successful active-learning science curricula for more than 25 years. The FOSS developers are dedicated to the proposition that elementary students learn science best by doing science. Teachers and students do science together when they open the FOSS kits, engaging in enduring experiences that lead to deeper understanding of the natural world. Science is an active enterprise, made active by our human capacity to think. Scientific knowledge advances when scientists observe objects and events, think about how they relate to what is known, test their ideas in logical ways, and generate explanations that integrate the new information into the established order.
