Required Areas of Study
Science
The aim of the Kindergarten to Grade 12 Science Curricula is to develop students who are scientifically literate. For Saskatchewan students, scientific literacy has been defined by a series of factors or descriptors. These factors outline what should be emphasized during science teaching. It is not necessary to design a science centre in the Kindergarten classroom. The factors of scientific literacy can be developed through materials and activities at the block building centre, sand and water centre, imaginative play centre, exploration centre, quiet-time relaxation centre, cooking centre, woodworking centre, or through other centres, experiences or projects. Centres, activities or projects devoted to science are not a critical component of a Kindergarten classroom. The learning that students acquire through various concrete experiences are what is important. The guidelines that outline an appropriate Kindergarten curriculum also apply to an appropriate science curriculum. The foundation for acquiring an understanding of science concepts is established through hands-on, experiential play with concrete materials. Children will gain a basis for constructing an understanding of their surroundings through discussion of their observations and reflection upon the meanings of their experiences. Such an understanding is the essence of science, and the ability to see how science is intertwined in all aspects of life is the basis of scientific literacy. Teachers can support science activities in the classroom by asking `why', `what', and `how' questions such as:

What do children do in pre-kindergarten? When you walk into a high-quality pre-k classroom, you will see children involved in active, hands-on learning that engages the young child and fosters in him the love of learning. Social and Emotional Development
    • demonstrate competence and independence...the classroom encourages children to do things for themselves. cooperate and follow instructions...children work in small and large groups together and become familiar with what is expected of them.
Language Development - Language activities promote successful communication skills by
    • using spoken language to express ideas... the child can retell a familiar story, or share where she went last night. employing language to communicate with others and to solve problems...children can express their wants and needs with words and can talk about conflicts using words rather than physical confrontations.
Physical Development - Children take part in activities that promote physical development of small (fine) and large (gross) muscles. It is critical that children recognize physical activities as an important part of healthy lifestyles. Gross motor activities help develop large muscles:
    • walking on balance beam, pumping a swing (develop balance and stability)

      Activity Time: 45 minutes
      Concepts Taught: compare/contrast
      Objective:
Students will compare their anatomy and habits to the anatomy and habits of a frog to identify with the characteristics unique to frogs. Connections:
§ Students will compare and contrast their bodies to that of a frog through their own observation (Kentucky Learning Goal 1.3 Students make sense of various things they observe). Context:
This lesson is use as an introduction to the integrated mathematics and science unit I have designed. Students have made observations in previous science lessons. They will listen and observe identify with the characteristics unique to frogs. Materials/Technology: § The book, “Ask Me If I’m a Frog” by Ann Milton § Post-it notes § Pen § Writing journal Procedures: § Read “Ask Me If I’m a Frog” by Ann Milton § As the story is being read aloud, have the students observe through touching and looking while answering questions.
