Lessons and activities that have primarily reading outcomes can be found in the Literacy Activities and Lessons section. Lessons that also support MCPS curricular units in other content areas con be found in the section. In addition, some teachers wrote descriptions of what their classrooms look like during these lessons. Below is a brief view of our kindergarten science curriculum, along with some great links for you and your child to explore! Living and Non-living
Students observe the characteristics of living and non-living things, explore behaviors, and find out what types of environments help living and non-living materials and organisms form or grow. Our budding scientists learn that scientists everywhere study a variety of different substances and categorize alive and innate forms into these classifications. Five Senses
Students explore the connections between smell and taste, sight and hearing, and touch. Our young scientists explore vision and hearing receptors and examine how we perceive sights and vibrations. And, they discover that these are the very tools scientists use to gather information. Traveling Zoo
Our kindergarten scientists participate in a yearlong study of the numerous creatures that inhabit our Earth. Students quickly discover that all organisms have basic needs such as air, water, and food, and that animals can only survive in environments in which their needs can be met. They understand that our world has many different environments and these support the life of different animals. These allow animals to have life cycles that include being born and developing into adults. Our young scientists create habitats, build models, and act out life cycles as they identify and study the unique features of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, and insects.

Kindergarten Science
Kindergarten Curiosity: Can This Be Science? By Carol Vaage For Science Council Conference, October 17, 1997 Use children's natural curiosity and interests to create a metamorphosis in your classroom. A metamorphosis refers to real changes: eggs hatching, seeds sprouting, a classroom pet dying. Real experiences, exploration and learning changing the child - that's the metamorphosis we, as teachers, are searching for. Each year, we get a new group of children with a wide range of interests and development. One year, you may get a group that is inventive and construction oriented. Another year, you may have a group of naturalists, or environmentalists, or geologists, or paleontologists, botanists, marine biologists, meteorologists, and so on. But the children don't come into your class neatly identified for you. The best part of the job is introducing topics until the momentum is sparked. Imagination soars, ideas fly, projects develop, and activity is sustained.

http://www.tryscience.org/parents/se_1.html
Science is all around you. Your backyard, your kitchen, and other areas around your home provide natural "laboratories" for children. Children are curious; exploring with science can be lots of fun while also teaching them a great deal about themselves and their world. As your family gets involved with science at home, keep two important issues in mind: education and safety. While science projects can be fun, they should be based on solid educational standards that provide them with knowledge and skills that are age-appropriate and, wherever possible, related to their school science curriculum. At-home activities should be designed by professionals with the child's safety and success in mind. Remember: even the simplest activities with the most basic of materials can be harmful or dangerous, so parental supervision and guidance is critical at all times. Interested in more?
