Teachers believe in the power of information, but the rush of school life makes it difficult to stay current with the research on effective instruction. This brief paper will help teachers become discerning consumers of educational programs and materials. It provides guidance on how to recognize scientifically based instructional strategies, and how to use the concepts of research in the classroom. Alphabet stamps - upper and lower case - 1 inch grid paper for sequencing. Word families to copy. Student names to copy. Strips of paper to stamp words and sentences. 4. Magnetic letters and magnetic boards. I make a name card for each student with name and picture and add a magnetic strip to the back. Word cards and name cards are always available - also alphabet strips are placed in all centers.

Language Development Children need to have a broad array of language experiences. Oral language, vocabulary, and other language concepts are crucial foundations for success in reading. Children's language can be developed by exposing them to opportunities to discuss experiences, make predictions and discuss past events.
Each year kindergarten students begin the year with a Me unit. This child is using language to tell about his "child of the week" pictures and story. Kindergarten children use their language skills each morning during calendar activity. They name the day, the month, and the year, as well as describe the daily weather. Each weekend a child takes home Cubby Bear and dictates a story to their parents about their experiences to share with the class and place in a class book. Show and Tell is a favorite activity among the kindergarten children. There is usually a theme for the letter of the week or the unit study.

    The Kindergarten Connection
Transition to kindergarten is a critical time in a child's development Ensuring that children are ready to enter school to learn and succeed is not only the parents' job. In fact, a national study released in April 1998, "Kindergarten Teachers and Classrooms: A Transition Context" emphasizes that the responsibility for successful transitions to kindergarten go beyond the kindergarten teachers as well. In addition to the individual child's readiness and the kindergarten teacher's role, the family, the educational system, preschool programs, and the community are all responsible for successful transitions. You may be anxious for school to start after a hectic summer. You may hear rumors about teachers, feel unclear about programs and procedures and have many questions. Your child may wonder " Who will be my classmates?", "Where is the bathroom?", "How will I know which bus to get on at the end of the day?". You will want to know who the teacher is, what the curriculum will be and how to best prepare your child for the changes ahead.
