Phonological Awareness Activities for the Kindergarten Child
Marvin L. Simner Overview Phonological awareness is the ability to recognize that spoken words consist of sounds and sound sequences. Most young children when hearing words such as airplane, baseball, and elephant, think only of the objects that the words represent and not of the sounds that comprise these words. For many children the ability to think of words as having sound properties in addition to meaning develops gradually during the preschool years. There are others, though, who fail to display this ability even at the end of kindergarten. For these children there is considerable evidence to suggest that learning to read may prove difficult. Fortunately, however, there is also substantial evidence that 5- to 6-year-old children who lack this ability can be helped through phonological awareness training. The booklet is divided into four sections. Throughout the sections are examples of nearly 50 activities and games that can be easily implemented in the classroom and that are derived chiefly from the exercises used in the successful phonological awareness training programs.

Engaging these children in reading experiences appropriate to their current levels of literacy is the best approach to closing the gap between their skills and those of their more reading-advantaged peers. For the early elementary students with the lowest performance this means going back all children, including those at risk, learn to enjoy, value, and benefit from schooling. The High/Scope method can and does teach students to read, write, and in general, become productive and well-adjusted citizens.

    contents
    ... PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION
Preventing Reading Difficulties Before Kindergarten Americans want their children to start school ready to learn, a goal that includes preparedness for reading instruction. As we discussed in Chapter 4 , among those children who are likely to begin school less prepared to learn to read are (1) children living in low-income communities; (2) children with limited English proficiency; (3) preschool children slated to attend an elementary school where achievement is chronically low; (4) children suffering from specific cognitive deficiencies, hearing impairments, and early language impairments; and (5) children whose parents have a history of reading problems. Children who are particularly likely to have difficulty learning to read in the primary grades are those who begin school with less prior knowledge and skill in certain domains, most notably letter knowledge, phonological sensitivity, familiarity with the basic purposes and mechanisms of reading, and language ability. In this chapter, we discuss research findings on how the various worlds in which infants and toddlers live affect the development of their ability to learn to read. We begin by discussing the role of parents and caregivers, including both the beliefs they hold concerning reading and literacy and the behaviors they engage in with their children in support of literacy development. We then discuss the literature on preschool environments and their contributions to reading skills development. Next we discuss biological and physical conditions and their effects on reading ability development. We present information on clinic- and pediatrician office-based literacy development efforts. Finally, we examine how children with physical and cognitive impairments have been aided in their efforts to learn to read.

    Guided Reading in Kindergarten
    INTRODUCTION

My, how the kindergarten curriculum has changed in my years of teaching. I firmly believe in providing my students with a developmentally appropriate curriculum. However, in the past few years the kindergarten curriculum has accelerated tremendously. Kindergarten children are expected to go to first grade with beginning reading skills. In order to teach the state mandated objectives while providing developmentally appropriate activities, I developed this approach to reading in kindergarten. First of Year Approach After the initial assessment of each child in my class, I group them according to their academic and developmental level. This enables me to work with children that need help learning their letters, beginning sounds, etc. while introducing emergent reading text to children who are ready to begin reading in small group situations. I use the Building Blocks philosophy in whole group instruction which introduces objectives in a multilevel format. To read more about the Four Blocks/Building Blocks approach to reading visit Patricia Cunningham's web site.
Students in my classroom are placed in five groups. They rotate through five literacy based centers each week, included Guided Reading. I see at least three groups everyday. I call groups from other centers as I finish each group. Each group is assigned a color. (I choose activities for each group based on their academic level. However, this discussion is based on the groups ready for guided reading).

    School Day Highlights
B.F. Day has a long and proud history of educating children in Seattle. We are the oldest, continually operating school in the city. Our building is a designated historic landmark having undergone state-of-the-art renovation in 1991. B.F. Day has an outstanding record of parent and community participation in school governance and support. Our school was one of the first Seattle elementary schools to institute a Site Council with staff, parent and community participation. We have an active Parent Teacher Student Association ( PTSA ), which supports the many special programs offered to our students. A Parent Volunteer Coordinator helps place parent and community volunteers in classrooms, the library and tutoring programs. In 1996, B.F. Day instituted a Parent/Teacher/Student contract signed by all teachers and families attending the school. Parents make a commitment to volunteer a minimum of 15 hours per family to support the school. Eighty percent of all B.F. Day families currently fulfill this commitment. B.F. Day has a long-term relationship with the Fremont Arts Council, which provides volunteer involvement for school art, projects. The Fremont Chamber of Commerce partners with the school for annual fundraising activities. Our neighbors, Adobe Systems and Getty Images, provides technology and resources to the school.
