  • Children are playing and working with materials or other children. They are not aimlessly wandering or forced to sit quietly for long periods of time.
Children have access to various activities throughout the day, such as block building, pretend play, picture books, paints and other art materials, and table toys such as legos, pegboards, and puzzles. Children are not all doing the same things at the same time.
Teachers work with individual children, small groups, and the whole group at different times during the day. They do not spend time only with the entire group.
Children learn numbers and the alphabet in the context of their everyday experiences. Exploring the natural world of plants and animals, cooking, taking attendance, and serving snack are all meaningful activities to children.
Children work on projects and have long periods of time (at least one hour) to play and explore. Filling out worksheets should not be their primary activity.

    August 21, 1998
To the Editors of All Indiana Daily Newspapers: Opportunities will abound when the 1999 Indiana General Assembly convenes in January. Given the $2 billion state surplus, our policymakers will have the rare opportunity, not only to implement sizeable tax reductions, but to invest additional resources in the state's most precious and important commodityHoosier children. Positive K-12 education policy should be at the top of every legislator's priority list, and the highest priority should be changes in the law governing kindergarten. The Indiana Department of Education will request changing the enrollment cut-off date from June 1 to September 1, and providing school corporations the financial support to make optional full-day kindergarten available the highest of all priorities. Implementing optional full-day kindergarten will give school corporations more tools with which to deliver effective early education opportunities. Any full-day kindergarten policy adopted by the legislature should ensure that parents have the option to enroll their children and schools have an option of when, and if, they make a transition to full-day programming. Research on full-day kindergarten programs strongly supports the benefits of this policy. This research suggests that full-day kindergartners exhibited more independent learning, classroom involvement, productivity in work with peers, and reflectiveness than half-day kindergartners. Moreover, children in full-day programs tended to exhibit more positive behaviors than did pupils in half-day or alternate-day programs. Researchers have found a positive relationship between participation in full-day kindergarten and later school performance.

The Ewing Public School District employs more than 600 individuals, including secretaries and support staff. The Importance of Standardized Test Scores Test scores, more than anything, point to the direction a school district is headed. In The Ewing Public Schools, that direction is clearly up. The eighth grade Early Warning Test (EWT) shows a marked improvement over the last two years. In 1994, 45.5% of students taking the test were in the top level for reading. In 1997, that has risen to 59.3% of students in the top level. In math, only 27% of students were in this top level in 1994. But by 1997, 46.5% of students had achieved this top level of performance. Also noteworthy is the fact, that in the 1997 test, 94.9% of those tested passed the reading section, while 87.4% passed the math, and 86.4% passed the writing portion.

How Will I Know My Child Is Ready for Kindergarten? Kindergarten is a very important time in a child’s early school experience. It starts them on a path that influences their subsequent learning and school success. For most children, kindergarten is the first step in a journey through the world of formal schooling. However, children who enter kindergarten in the twenty-first century are quite different from those who began schooling in previous years. They come from increasingly diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, social, economic and language backgrounds. They also differ in the kinds of educational experiences they have had prior to kindergarten. There is no single measure that guarantees that a child is ready for kindergarten. In general, as your child nears his/her fifth birthday , she/he is ready to start school when it begins in the fall. In addition, the following information describes where most students are developmentally before beginning kindergarten. Keep in mind that each child will come to school with a variety of strengths and skills. Think of the following list as a way to identify your child’s strengths, rather than using it to decide whether she/her is behind or ahead of other children. If you want to help your child prepare for success in kindergarten, try the activities suggested on the back of this guide. And once the school year begins, know that his or her teacher will create a learning environment that gives each individual student an opportunity to thrive and learn new skills throughout the year.

Nelson Mandela, the well-known statesmen, once said, "Education is the great engine to personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that the child of a farm worker can become the president of a great nation." A study by High/Scope Educational Research Foundation of Ypsilanti, Michigan, showed the significant value of early learning. From 1962-1967, 123 African Americans, all aged 3 to 4 and born in poverty, and therefore at a high risk of later failing in school, were randomly divided into two groups. One group was exposed to a high-quality preschool program while the control group was not exposed to any preschool programs. The program that the experimental group was exposed to was based on High/Scope's active learning approach. In the study's most recent phase, 95% of the participants were interviewed at age 27. Additional data were gathered from the subjects' school, social service and arrest records. The most significant findings of this study were:
    • Almost a third as many of those attending the preschool program, opposed to those with no preschool exposure (71% vs. 54%) graduated from regular or adult high school, or received their General Education Development Certificate.

    The Education of Children
The longer we consider and examine the present day methods of education, the more clearly we recognise that children lack the care and consideration which would be in accord with their present and future needs, a care which considers equally the child's mental and physical needs and capacities. We notice that if children are not given the care which takes their stage of human development into consideration, they will lack the foundation for the task ahead in school and for their later lives in general. This realisation has accompanied me for a life time. At first nebulous and a surmise only, but I have been increasingly aware of it during thirty years of endeavour in the educational field. Especially during the last ten years, I have put my ideas for examination before teachers, educators and parents of all social classes, whose deliberations, based on their experiences, agreed with mine, that the present and future living conditions of men and women of all social classes rest on the careful consideration and rounded mental and physical care of early childhood, and that, at the moment, schools and life in general do not possess this genuine and firm foundation to a large extent. This realisation increasingly directed my educational endeavours in recent years, towards the care of children in their earliest years, up to school age, especially paying attention to their activity drive.

    Significant Points
    • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
    • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
    • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

Findings of the project of interest to people who work with children Project Overview Cultural Models, Values, and Beliefs Similarly, endorsing and talking about a cultural model for children's learning and education does not always translate into parental actions that might be predicted by a superficial analysis. In this chapter, we detailed which beliefs encoded in our sample's cultural model of learning and education they act on and some reasons why they do not act on others. One significant implication of this analysis is its usefulness for program design, such as finding ways to improve home/school cooperation to promote student achievement. Knowing which beliefs in their model of child learning and education are linked to action provides a basis for designing programs that are more sensitively fitted to the family's culture and more likely to work effectively. Our studies have been guided by several questions about immigrant Latino parents' educational values and beliefs: To what extent do immigrant Latino parents value formal schooling for their children? What role do they see formal education playing in their children's future lives and well-being? To what extent is there discontinuity in values and beliefs that might work against children's academic achievement (for example, "low academic effort syndrome")? Alternatively, to what extent is there continuity, or commonality, between parents' education-related values and beliefs and values and beliefs that support school achievement? What other discontinuities might exist that can interfere with these children's school success?

    KINDERGARTEN
The emphasis of physical education in kindergarten is to assist student development in fundamental motor skills, manipulative skills and movement experiences. Cognitive concepts associated with movement and fitness will enable the student to develop positive attitudes toward healthy lifestyles and physical activities. Kindergarten students begin to understand acceptable behaviors for the physical activity setting. Safe practices, classroom rules and procedures are prominent issues during instruction. Concepts of cooperation are introduced through small group activities, involving sharing equipment and space. Kindergarten students must be encouraged to participate in physical activities in and out of the classroom setting. Teachers must reinforce to students the importance of practice in order to learn and that it is acceptable to be a beginner when trying new skills. The physical education framework follows a developmentally appropriate sequence. Activities should be taught from the simple to the complex. The competencies are required to be taught through a variety of instructional strategies a district may develop. Competencies are not hierarchal or chronologically ordered. Competencies provide a general guideline of on-going instruction.
