Tell Me a Story, Paint Me the Sun by Chaplan (1991)
This is an illustrated book, appropriate for elementary school children and younger adolescents. It describes a girl whose father loses his job and becomes depressed (or starts drinking). Although he does not seek treatment or improve, she is able to talk to other adults and learn that she is worthwhile. This book is useful for the child who must learn to cope with ongoing parental denial of a mental illness or drug problem. Daddy Doesn't Have to be a Giant Anymore by J R Thomas (1996) Clarion Books
This illustrated book is told from the elementary school aged daughter's point of view. It describes her reactions to her alcoholic father's mood swings and erratic behavior. She is present when family and friends arrange a supportive confrontation to break down the father's denial and get him into residential treatment. When he returns from the treatment, he is on the road to sobriety and is able to talk to his daughter about his past behavior.

The family is the oldest and most fundamental of human institutions. The conjugal, elementary, or nuclear family exists in known societies. The family has been subjected to enormous pressures as human cultures have changed from a rural to an urbanized, industrial orientation. These changes have altered the aspirations of "family", but have not greatly diminished the desire for entering into intimate relationships. All modern family units do not include children, although it is still the norm. The following links provide "safe areas" for children on the Net and an array of resources for parents. Thank you to the WI Country Club Managers for supporting Camp HOPE! Camp HOPE (Helping Other's Pain End) is a wonderful place in central Wisconsin where children and teenagers gather to work through the grieving process after a loved one dies. The camp gently guides the children and teenagers through the complex emotions by showing them that they are not alone. Fun is the top priority at Camp HOPE. The children and teenagers learn that it is okay to laugh and play and that to do so is not disrespectful to the memory of the person who died. Through playing, sharing, and being together with peers and staff who know the pain, the children and teenagers realize that the emotions they are feeling are a normal part of grief. What is happening to them happens to others everywhere, and at Camp HOPE, their pain is understood and shared. The founders of Camp HOPE are Becky and Marty Loy. They began the camp in September, 1989 in memory of their daughter, Sara Margaret.

WiredKidz a safe, moderated online community for kids.
    http://www.wiredkidz.org/privacy.html

    WiredKidz
About WiredKidz Your privacy is of utmost importance to WiredKids. Although the law doesn't cover not-for-profit organizations, we believe strongly in protecting children's privacy and safety online and strive to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. Only children and teenagers who are WiredKids' volunteers may use our WiredKids and Teens communities. We do not collect more information from your children than is reasonably necessary for them to participate in any activity at our site. Since we are an Internet safety program, we believe that certain off-line contact information for parents and their children is essential for your child/teen to be a member of WiredKids/Teens. This information includes a letter of good standing from their school (or substituted proof from a home-schooled child) that helps us confirm that your child is indeed a child, and registered in school. While we usually oppose the collection of too much information by a site, our collection of such information is key to the protection and safety or your child while visiting our site and being a member of WiredKids/Teens. Without it we cannot be assured that an adult will not be posing as a child for admission. While we cannot guarantee that adults will not infiltrate our programs, posing as a child, we will be educating our members how to deal with adults online and protect themselves online at all times.

So my husband and I are personally aware children, especially teenagers with ADD or ADHD present unique challenges for parents, teachers and counselors.
    http://www.chrisdendy.com/
Welcome to our ADHD website! Our family welcomes you to our website which features important information on teenagers who are struggling with ADD or ADHD. Attention deficit disorder runs in both our families, so we have had a lot of first-hand experience coping with its challenges. Currently all three of our children and two of our grandchildren have been diagnosed with either ADD or ADHD. So my husband and I are personally aware children, especially teenagers with ADD or ADHD present unique challenges for parents, teachers and counselors. Parenting our sons was probably the most humbling, yet rewarding, experience of our lives. Now that our sons and daughter are grown and coping successfully with ADD and ADHD, we have developed this website to share information with other families and professionals. Hopefully, you will learn from both our mistakes and our successes. My family and I bring you a message of hope plus send best wishes during these difficult teen years! Chris A.
