Executive Summary
Safety Rules was a school injury prevention program which ran in primary schools and district high schools across Western Australia between 1998-2000. The program drew on programs that have been implemented in other states such as School Safe Cycle in Victoria and the Student Committees for Injury Prevention (SCIPP) from NSW. The program was offered to all schools in Western Australia with primary aged students. Each paritcpating school was given an incentive grant, resources and training to implement the program. Please refer to the Executive Summary of the final report of the "Safety Rules OK!" statewide school based injury prevention program. Information about the program and on a range of child injury issues has been made available at the "Safety Rules OK!" website.

Student Safety
The San Juan district is committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students. In San Juan, 99% of students attend school with no serious safety or discipline problems. According to the district's annual school survey, more than 80% of students, parents and staff believe their school is a safe place.
Safe Schools Partnership with Sheriff's Department
San Juan has a "Safe Schools" partnership with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department . Off-duty deputies (Safe School Officers) are on school campuses daily to help with prevention and enforcement.
Safe Schools Plans and Teams
In addition, every school has established Safe School teams that include staff and parents and Safe School plans , updated annually, to prevent problems and respond effectively in case of an emergency. The district's Safe Schools Task Force, with representatives from each school and district staff, works on safety plans and issues, and receives monthly training on safety issues.

The implementation of injury prevention programs in North Central Indiana has helped Memorial strive toward attainment of Level II Trauma Center verification, as well as enhancing the existing community outreach efforts. Several programs have been initiated which address falls, helmet use / bicycle safety, and motor vehicle safety. Additional components of some of the programs include water safety, gun safety, recreational / sports safety, violence prevention and conflict resolution. Effective injury prevention programming began as a result of an injury prevention committee that included members of our community as well as hospital staff.

Treat students with equal respect. Create ways for students to share their concerns. Help children feel safe expressing their feelings. Have in place a system for referring children who are suspected of being abused or neglected. Offer extended day programs for children. Promote good citizenship and character. Identify problems and assess progress toward solutions. Support students in making the transition to adult life and the workplace.

Tips for Parents
Parents can help create safe schools. Here are some ideas that parents in other communities have tried:
  • Discuss the school's discipline policy with your child. Show your support for the rules, and help your child understand the reasons for them. Involve your child in setting rules for appropriate behavior at home.

Injury Prevention Injury Prevention WHO Traumatic Injury-2000, Press Release "The Global Burden of Injury" Appendices The Injury Chartbook (posted May 20th, 2003) It is a recognized  precept that the term "accident" is a misnomer and that injuries are preventable. While the stated purpose of PHTLS is to provide the prehospital provider with the tools to enable effective trauma management to begin at the scene, PHTLS is also cognizant that prevention can be responsible to alleviate the burden of traumatic injury amongst the masses. As EMS providers, we may hold the most effective positions with which to place at the forefront of the preventative field. We have, after all, seen the consequences of traumatic injury. And whom better to educate those groups most afflicted by trauma, than the very people who serve to provide initial care. There are many ways that you can become involved in the prevention movement. We hope that this page will provide you with some of the tools that can help facilitate your interest in a particular area. Or at the very least, give you some ideas as to where to begin.
Some thoughts to start:
  • Get involved in safety programmes. There are multitude of organizations that provide effective presentations and packages to promote injury awareness, targeted to a specific group or injury.
