The most effective safety and injury prevention programs acknowledge that changing human behavior is but one strategy to save lives. EDC's Health and Human Development Programs (HHD) emphasizes a combination of strategies, including legislation and policy development (e.g., drinking age limits; helmet laws), education (e.g., driver education, poison hotline awareness), and product or environmental modification (e.g., childproof medicine containers, fences around swimming pools). Working with practitioners, state and federal agencies, and national organizations, EDC builds skills and expertise to reduce death and disability. TOUR EDC'S ONLINE RESOURCES Children's Safety The Children's Safety Network (CSN) works with state agencies to develop and implement injury, suicide, and violence prevention programs. It also helps state and local health departments promote effective strategies in such areas as motor vehicle, bicycle, and playground safety; poison and fire hazards; and child abuse and neglect. CSN's work in suicide prevention and motor vehicle safety is featured in an article of the Fall 2001 issue of Mosaic , "The Science of Healthy Behavior."

Understanding what circumstances lead children to start fires and by following a few basic fire safety practices, you can reduce the chances of your children starting destructive fires. Curiosity about fire is part of a child's growth process, especially between the ages of 2 and 9. The majority of fires set by young children are set out of curiosity or experimentation. When children are bored and under no supervision, fires may happen. Matches and lighters should be locked up. Any child can be a potential firesetter. Firesetting behavior in some children is a way of expressing feeling of frustration, unhappiness and need. Punishment, discipline and "scare tactics" will not satisfy a child's curiosity about fire. The child may be angry over a divorce, a move or other crisis. They may be seeking revenge or using fire to send a message that they desperately need attention. Seminole County Fire Department’s Juvenile Firesetters Intervention Program, which began in 1982, may be able to help curb undesirable behavior. Of course, there is no charge for the department’s services, and all information is kept strictly confidential.

The two-hour class will provide an overview of the current risks and dangers, prevention measures, and signs of abuse. The session will also highlight police programs and resources used in missing children and abuse cases.
