This article profiling preteens focuses on how tweens' clothing choices define who they are and how they want to be perceived. Both girls and boys often are looking for a way to define themselves, say fashion experts, and changes in fashion and other aspects of outward appearance can help them do that. (AP, 8/12/05 ) JULY 2005 Study: Preteens Do Better in K-8 Setting
A study of middle school-age students in the Milwaukee Public Schools district has found that the students did better academically, had higher attendance rates, and lower suspension rates when they attended K-8 schools, rather than separate middle schools. The district decided to pursue the study after the number of K-8 schools in the district increased six-fold, largely due to parent demand. Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. One conversation with your kids about not smoking isn't enough. Introduce the subject when a child is still very young, in simple language and with clear rules. As your child grows, repeat the message in terms he can relate to. Here are some suggestions to help you decide what to say, when to say it, and how. Even if smoking is a hot-button issue for you, it's important that you remain calm and relaxed when raising the subject with your child. Keep it light. Nothing turns off teens and preteens more than a lecture. Don't do all the talking. Ask questions and truly listen to your child's answers, without judging.

Pre-teens: Bullying
Even though everyone agrees bullying is not ok it can still happen... and your child may be bullied or even be a bully at some time.
Bullying is not okay
There are three ways children can be bullied.*
  • Physical bullying Verbal bullying Relational bullying
How will you know bullying has happened?
Here are some ideas to help if bullying is a problem for your children....being bullied is never your child's fault...Have you noticed your child's behaviour has changed? Maybe he or she doesn't want to go to school or has unexplained tummy aches or headaches? Has your child lost confidence recently or seems to be low? All these could be signs that your child is being bullied. If you notice any of these signs, or your child tells you about bullying, there are some steps you can take.
How to help
Take bullying seriously. You may be tempted to think your child is being over-sensitive, over-reacting or simply wanting extra attention. Telling you about bullying will have been a big step and taken lots of courage. When you react by taking your child seriously, your relationship with each other will be stronger. Talk together about how to sort the problem out. If the bullying happened at school, a club or other organisation your first step is to alert the staff to the problem. Ask your child to tell a trusted adult straight away when bullying happens. Make sure your child warns the bully that they're going to do this. You could find a special listener for your child such as a play ground assistant or school secretary who is around everyday to support your child.

At what age is it safe for children to begin to bicycle outside quiet neighborhood streets and ride on the street instead of the sidewalk?
Experts differ slightly on this issue. While there is no "magic age" that determines when it is safe to ride on arterial roads, children in the 9-12 year-old age group likely have developed the cognitive skills that allow them to bicycle on the road.
"Younger kids [under the age of 9 or 10] generally do not judge closing speeds well," explains Preston Tyree, education director of the Texas Bicycle Coalition in Austin.

However, are parents always available and can they afford it? Fathers as much as mothers? Are they prepared to let their kids go out? If so, on what conditions? On their own or with an adult? And how? Is the bicycle always a suitable way to get around? Is public transport good enough? Is there a difference between the country and the town? Is mobility not a universal right, for the young as well? Is it not part of the way they learn about life, not just the city? A solution for parent-taxis! Lack of after-school programs for preteens gives kids an advantage in conflict with parents, says UC Berkeley researcher 05 Jan 2000 By Patricia McBroom, Public Affairs BERKELEY With few or no full-scale after-school programs in place for children aged 10 to 12, working parents are losing a battle of wills with their kids who want to be free of adult supervision, according to research carried out at the Center for Working Families at the University of California, Berkeley. These families are being "dropped off a cliff" in terms of after-school care, once their children are out of elementary school where care programs were routinely in place until the end of the working day, said Rivka Polatnick, a research sociologist at the center. "We are playing with fire," said Polatnick. "We know that the period of preteen into early adolescence is a very vulnerable age and a critical time in development. These children are being left essentially unsupervised." Polatnick's research, to be released by the center this month, is based on interviews with 36 preteens in a Bay Area middle school and their parents. It is one of a few studies conducted in the United States to collect in-depth material on how preteens feel and what choices they are making when they get to middle school. These case studies add insight to national statistics showing that more than one third of U.S. children aged 10 to 12 with working parents are regularly taking care of themselves.

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 30, 1996 A new way to help children 5 through 12 stop thumbsucking is gaining ground in the nation's dental offices, one that is safe, easy and involves no fear or discomfort for the child. It's called T-Guard(TM), a thumb cover of FDA-approved, medical-grade material, attached by a parent to a child's wrist using a colorful, lock-band bracelet. T-Guard doesn't keep children from putting their thumbs in their mouths, but it makes it impossible for their lips to form the tight seal around the thumb that generates the soothing suction sensation to which children are drawn. While child health experts don't consider thumbsucking a problem in very young children carried over into preschool and grade school it can hinder social development and cause severe dental problems affecting the child's physical health and appearance. For pediatric dentists, long dissatisfied with putting children through extensive fittings and impressions necessary to create preventive intraoral devices, T-Guard is a welcome alternative. It often eliminates thumbsucking in a few weeks, as compared to the six months or more typical of cemented mouth appliances.

Many books are available that help teach children about sexuality. Some books for young children explain how babies are born. Other books describe puberty and the changes that preteens and teens go through. In addition to books for children, there are books about sexuality that are written for parents. Some of those books may be appropriate for you. Also, you may want to keep some of the books for children in your childcare setting for children to use. (Before doing this, you probably should discuss the books with the parents of children in your care.)
There are several things that parents and childcare providers should keep in mind when searching for educational books about sexuality for their children and for themselves.

From the Mouths of Babes, By Parry Aftab, Esq. More than 70 million Internet users in the United States are under the age of 18. They each spend more time online than most adults do (aside from work). They shop, make buying decisions, communicate, play games and search. They do their homework, collaborations and hold meetings online. They participate in surveys, fill out forms and register for online sites and services. They are the future of the Internet and e-communities and e-commerce. And, for smart e-businesses, the future is now! In preparation for the IAPP and TRUSTe West Coast conference on privacy where we were running a plenary panel on kids, teens and privacy, I polled thirty preteens and teens who work with TeenAngels.org (our WiredKids.org’s preteen and teen online safety program) about privacy. Their sophistication surprised me and I expect will surprise others too.

Ask Our Experts: Effect of Divorce on Pre-Teens Is it better to stay together for the sake of the children? Raisingkids.co.uk's parenting expert, Dr Pat Spungin, presents some of the facts and findings about a difficult and painful issue. Raisingkids member's problem
I'm in a relationship with a married man, who has 2 girls (aged 10 and 12). We very much want to live together but are worried about the effects of him leaving on the children. Will it have a detrimental effect, and is there a right age to go? What research has there been to show if its better to put up with an unhappy situation for the sake of the children versus moving on? Dr Spungin's advice
The findings over the years have been extremely mixed. For a number of years the orthodoxy was that children were better off when their parents separated - if the parents were arguing and unhappy, before the divorce. Then more recent research found that children of divorced parents, even where there was an amicable separation, suffered - they did less well at school and were often emotionally disturbed etc. Boys, in particular, were said to be negatively affected by the loss of their father. These findings should be seen against the fact that a majority of divorced fathers lost contact with their children within 2 years of getting divorced. As you can imagine, this is not a black-and-white matter, but many other factors come into play. Is the breakup civilised or are the children drawn into the conflict? Do they keep good relationships with both parents after the divorce?

The boy's admiration should hearten the makers of the phone for preteens. But executives at Firefly Mobile Inc. would be less enthusiastic about Steven's mom's response: "No, it's not." Sure, the phone has slick features that allow parents control over their kids' calling activity. But Amy LeVesque of Holland, Mich., said her son does not need a cell phone. He is, after all, only 10.
