This is second in a series of her proven tips to encourage women to Take Fitness to Heart. As the nation’s schools open their doors, there may be changes in the “student body.” More than ever before, many children and youth will be overweight. And the implications are devastating – unchecked obesity at a young age escalates into years of poor health, especially increasing the likelihood of diabetes and heart disease in later life. In addition, a major consequence of obesity in children is a lack of confidence and self-esteem. Kathrine Switzer offers simple tips to help parents develop a regular fitness routine for their children and healthy habits that will last a lifetime, both in and out of the classroom.

Posted Friday, 8 April, 2005 Kathrine Switzer is the author of Running and Walking for Women Over 40 (St. Martin’s Press), an Emmy-award winning TV commentator and a former winner of the New York City Marathon. This is part of a series of her proven tips to encourage women to Take Fitness to Heart. Running and walking are excellent ways to stay fit, but mothers with young children or preteens may find it difficult to incorporate an exercise routine into their busy schedules. RYKA’s Kathrine Switzer offers the following tips to help mothers find the time for exercise and fitness.
  • Childcare help: Share childcare with your exercise partners. If you all have small children, develop a schedule that rotates childcare evenly so no one misses consecutive workouts. Make deals with neighbors: If your close neighbor does not have kids, or like to run or walk, she can be of help. Arrange a tradeoff – if she watches your child while you run, then you can do the same, or pick up groceries or wait for a delivery or repairperson for her.

Preteen Kids Culture
Does your preteen's messy room drive you crazy? Believe it not, that mess is a necessary part of your child's development. If you have a child between 9 and 12, you may have noticed a few changes in their personal surroundings. For example, in one corner of their bedroom you may find their dolls or action figures, and above them a poster of their latest heart throb. In another, you'll find last year's birthday card plus their latest half finished craft project. In short, your preteen has likely become a clutter bug. Preteens are experts at saving every little memento of their young lives. While this space may seem like a mess to us, to our children it's a shrine to all things that make them tick.
Parent educator Sheila Boyce says preteen bedrooms are often the first place which reflects the fact that "they're developing their own sense of who they are. So all of their belongings, their pictures, notes from friends that are important to them are there, and parents need to respect that. Now that doesn't mean leaving everything around the house, but in their room or special place."
Boyce adds that preteens also "really need privacy. That's something that is very important at that middle age. So don't go through their things or take inventory of what's being saved and what's not."

Preteens and peer pressure
How to help your kids avoid negative influences from friends
Today show Sept. 10 - While peer pressure can technically start in early childhood with children trying to get other kids to play the games they want, it really becomes more of an issue in the preteen and teen years. It's not always negative, but in some cases it can create problems for families. "Today" contributor Dr. Gail Saltz is a psychiatrist with New York's Presbyterian Hospital and she shares some advice on how parents can handle peer pressure with their kids. Starting in middle school, children tend to spend more time with their peers and less time with their parents. This often leads kids to look to those peers for opinions, reinforcement and acceptance. All of this is developmentally quite normal. Peer pressure is not always negative. In fact friends often encourage each other to study, try out for sports or to try new interests in the arts. But these are years of experimentation and sometimes risk taking in an attempt to find their identity and feel "larger than life." To that end, some kids may try to pressure your child to behave in a manner that is dangerous. While in school your child will probably be pressured every day to do things like talk badly about peers, exclude or be hurtful to others, cheat, skip classes, break curfew and lie to you. In addition, kids are growing up faster than ever and will be pressured to do drugs, drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes and have sex.

Over the next several months Wired Kids ( wiredkids.com ) will launch a new website and online resource that will provide emotional and mental health support for victims of Internet sexual exploitation. It will also provide information, awareness and education for families, friends and others impacted by the Internet sexual exploitation of a loved one. It will contain information about the laws, legal process, typical schemes used by the molesters online, and links to offline support and helplines. It is an enormous effort, but crucial. According to studies conducted by Wired Kids and others, between 14 and 24% of young teens have reported meeting an Internet stranger in person, offline. While many of these meetings turn out just fine, far too many do not. And friends and even the friends' parents often know about these meetings ahead of time, but don't take actions to stop it. Katieplace.org will help them understand how important sharing this information can be, and what to do if they suspect their friend or loved one is the victim of sexual exploitation. The site will deal with the issues and risks head-on, but in a non-frightening way.

Diane M. Keefe For Parents Author Bio Reviews Home ... Order PREFACE Dear Parents, Daily Lifelines will provide you with the tools to teach your teens about values and techniques that will help them be successful in life. This book provides an opportunity for discussing key issues of concern to teens in a calm manner and while everyone is receptive. Daily Lifelines was written as a perpetual calendar, meaning that it can be used over again, and that the reader can begin at any time of the year. The Index allows readers to skip ahead to pertinent topics or review back as many times as they wish. I wrote this book because I needed a way to introduce my children to core values and all of the spiritual healing information I had been learning. It seemed that when I thought about discussing these things with them, it was when they had done something I did not like and I was disciplining them. That was not the right time to teach them. The inspiration for the book came to me one night

Parents General Health Your Kid's Sleep
Sleep - or lack of it - is probably the most-discussed aspect of baby care. New parents discover its vital importance those first few weeks to months. The quality and quantity of an infant's sleep affects the well-being of everyone in the household, and it's the difference between having cheerful, alert parents and members of the walking dead. And sleep struggles rarely end with a growing child's move from crib to bed. It simply changes form. Instead of cries, it's pleas or refusals. Instead of a feeding at 3:00 AM, it's a nightmare or request for water. So how do you get your child to bed through the cries, screams, avoidance tactics, and pleas? How should you respond when you're awakened in the middle of the night? And how much sleep is enough for your child? It all depends on age. How Much Is Enough?
Charts that list the hours of sleep likely to be required by an infant or a 2-year-old may cause concern when individual differences aren't considered. These numbers are simply averages reported by large groups of children of particular ages. There's no magical number of hours required by all kids in a certain age group. Two-year-old Sarah might sleep from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM, whereas 2-year-old Johnny is just as alert the next day after sleeping from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM. However, having said that, sleep is very important to a child's well-being. Kids' behaviors can directly reflect their lack of sleep in a way that may not be immediately obvious. When adults are tired, they can either be grumpy or have low energy. But a child can become hyper, disagreeable, and have extremes in behavior.

Balancing Stress and Success
We live in a pressured world, and we want our children to be successful. It sometimes seems like our kids have to be athletes, play an instrument, be involved in community service activities and excel in school just to be "average."
Many parents are struggling with the desire to be good parents, provide opportunities to our children that we did not have, and give them a chance to be the best they can be. However, in the process, we and our children are likely to experience a lot of stress, and we are likely to feel that we do not communicate with our children as much as we would like to, or about the things that we should. Parents need resources and strategies for effective parent-child communication, which is the focus of this section.
I invite you to explore how to balance stress and success, while at the same time making a commitment to communicate more with your children. Try the activities below to get your mind thinking about your children, and then go talk to them.
