IN THE COMMUNITY
National Children's Dental Health Month
The annual observance of children's dental health began in February in 1941. The American Dental Association held the first national Children's Dental Health Day in February 1949, and by 1955 the day event grew into a week long event. National Children’s Dental Health Month finally evolved into an entire month in 1981. The American Dental Association produces a program planning kit for its state and local societies and dental alliances to assist them in local promotional efforts. Planning kits include a poster, planning workbook, suggested resources, reproducible handouts, and publicity information. Posters are also available to the dental societies for use in classroom visits.
Give Kids A Smile Day 2004
Once again, the Pediatric and Community Dentistry department participated in the American Dental Association’s Give Kids A Smile Day. Local dentists, orthodontists, oral surgeons, and general dentists were among some of the 80 dental volunteers providing treatment. In addition, the School’s unique social services program, CARES (council, advocacy, resources, education, services) was available to enroll interested patients in dental coverage insurance and assist with other needs that were preventing patients from receiving dental care. This year over 300 pre-school children, school children, pre-teens, and teens visited the dental school and received dental screenings, sealant applications, and fluoride treatments.

Nature education for children and preteens
Q: We are planning to spend 4 months in the Melbourne area, January through April 2002. We will be pulling our daughter (12 years old and quite mature) out of school for the period and essentially homeschooling her. She is very interested in nature and wildlife, and I am looking for educational tours or more extended programs in which she could participate. Do you have any suggestions? I've looked through a number of books and searched the Internet, and have ideas of interesting places to take her, but haven't been able to find many programs or educational activities. Thank you for any suggestions you might have. A: Good idea. I'm not sure exactly what you have in mind, but here are some thoughts. In Melbourne, you're near enough to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, which has a wonderful kid-friendly visitor center and offers guided tours and other programs on a regular basis. You could check with the visitor center to see what programs would be available during the months you'll be around. You and your daughter may consider the state of Florida's Junior Ranger Program . In this program, kids volunteer at state parks and learn in the process. In the end, each Junior Ranger gets a badge. I think the closest state park participating in the Junior Ranger program is

49. Challenges Of Preteens

The Challenges of Preteens
by Diane Marty Preteens can surprise, anger and delight you all within the same hour, says Julie, mother of two children in that age group. Her advice for parents? Get to know your kids well and construct campaigns to protect them from harmful forces.
Less Likely to Mutiny
Busier Kids
I've heard complaints from many children that they have no time to be kids, says Peter Jaksa, Ph.D., author of 25 Stupid Mistakes Parents Make. In previous generations, preteens came home after school and played with friends. Most weekdays now preteen routines consist of school, extracurricular activities, homework and finally, bed. In many cases, this is too much, too soon. Preteens need to be active, but not overwhelmed.
Electronic Gurus
Technology has been responsible for some of the greatest changes in preteen life.
Parents need to be aware of what preteens are doing online, whom they are talking to and what they are saying, says Ed N. Brazee, Ph.D., editor of the Professional Publications for National Middle School Association. The best way to find this out is through regular conversations with your children, he adds. But placing computers in public parts of the house will also keep your preteens "honest.” And of course, limit online time.
Exchanging instant messages and socializing on the Internet does not substitute for one-on-one contact, says Harriet Mosatche, Ph.D., author of To Old For This, Too Young For That!: Your Survival Guide to the Middle-School Years. Preteens need to make real-time, non-virtual relationships, she adds.

Missing $10 sets off strip-search of preteens
(Category: Texas School strip searches students Mainland Preparatory Academy , an award winning charter school, doesn't play around with theft on campus. Principal Wilma Green admitted that seven girls and three boys who had been in a midday study hall were asked to take their clothes off down to their underwear while school officials searched for $10 that one of the students claimed was missing.
The students were all 11- and 12-year-olds, Green said.
“Everyone (of the students) acknowledges that that little girl had $10 and no one left that room for two hours,” said Green, who authorized the search. “Nobody objected to it. Most of the kids didn’t mind because they wanted to get their name cleared.” The money wasn't found on any of the children. Process of elimination indicates that the teacher took the $10. There is no mention in the article of whether she stripped also in order to "get her name cleared". Green does not understand that it is wrong to strip search little children. She also doesn't understand what is wrong with telling a child "take off all of your clothes or I'll think you stole the money". Fortunately, at least one parent understands.

Kids Corner: Preteens stumble along the road to maturity
Sunday, March 20, 2005 By Tara Rockacy
Making the exciting and often frightening leap into the early teen years can plunge children into a state of confusion and self-doubt, as three novels demonstrate. Charlie Harrisong is a fragile, introverted 11-year-old. The second eldest of five siblings in a close-knit family from Normal, Ill., all Charlie wants is a "normal" life. But in Kate Klise's "Deliver Us From Normal" (Scholastic, $16.95, ages 10-13), he is surrounded by abnormalities that force him to invite discomfort and humiliation. Or so he believes. He doesn't have friends at school and does his best to stay unnoticed. Unfortunately for Charlie, who is struggling with the early stages of depression, his family does nothing but stand out. Charlie keeps lists, such as: Most Embarrassing Things in My Life and Most Embarrassing Things My Family Did. Everything changes for the Harrisongs in the summer before Charlie is to enter sixth grade when his family must flee in the night and embark upon a journey to a new life. Charlie slowly learns to let down his guard. Klise's fast-moving, energetic story is character-driven and full of events, both traumatic and fascinating. Readers will quickly become captivated by this very real, touching and funny tale of lives that are very far from Normal.

The book is an honest and straightforward exploration of how adoption and foster care impact teens, and how different families come together.

community diaries shop Keeping Kids Safe Protecting Preteens From Injury By Gwen Morrison As our children grow, we allow them more and more freedom. It's all a part of becoming independent. But are we preparing our preteens for all the responsibility that goes along with this freedom? As parents we know there comes a time when we must let go just a little and allow our kids to partake in various activities on their own. It can be easy to acquire a false sense of security in regards to the safety of our preteens. Haven't we already spent the last 10 years going over and over the safety rules? Unfortunately, many preteens may not know how to follow these rules once they are out in the world exploring their new liberation. Rules of the Road
"This is the perfect age to begin introducing traffic safety to a young rider," says Preston Tyree, education director for the Texas Bicycle Coalition in Austin, Texas. "They are physically and developmentally capable of handling a bike and understanding the complexity of traffic situations." At this age, kids are usually riding on busy roads outside the neighborhood, and they need to know the rules of the road. "Approach this discussion as the 'first driver's ed,'" says Tyree. "Everything a bicycle rider learns is exactly what a motor vehicle driver needs to know. We will have better drivers and drivers who are more aware of cyclists."

Paquette According to Lissie Browder, a Sunday school teacher at Trinity United Methodist Church in Wichita Falls, Kan., our preteens are asking, but institutions aren't paying attention. "Unfortunately, my church spends less time and money on these kids than any other group in the church," she says. "I believe it's like that at most churches." Giving Them Answers
What kinds of questions are on these young minds? "[They] ask the same questions mankind has always asked: Who is God? What does it take to go to heaven? Why is 'little me' significant?" Bowder says. Rabbi Glenn Black, director of regional programming for National Conference of Synagogue Youth (NCSY), agrees. "They're dealing with the same issues we're grappling with," he says. Jewish preteens, even if they attend religious day schools, have other questions. "Kids want to know what distinguishes them as a Jew: What's different between them and other people? Why should they follow the Jewish religion?" he says. Current events also matter. "Israel is a big issue: How do we respond? Who's right, who's wrong?" Rabbi Black says.

Talking with Preteens About the Colorado School Shooting
Dr. Susan Linn
THE SCENE "Mommy, is this in Kosovo?" eight-year-old Sarah asks as she looks at newspaper pictures of a bloodied victim hanging from a Littleton, Colorado, high-school window. "No," you answer sadly. "It's in the United States." "I thought you said we were safe here," she says. WHAT TO SAY
We can reassure our children that we're probably safe from bombing, but how do we reassure them about random acts of violence? It is likely that most children over the age of eight are going to know something about the tragedy in Littleton, Colorado. They can read newspapers themselves; they may see horrible images on the news, and they may hear about it from their friends. It's only through talking with them that we can understand their particular concerns, clarify their misconceptions, and provide them with support and guidance. Here are a few examples of what you might say. Something really terrible happened in the United States yesterday, I wonder if you know anything about it?
Asking children to tell you what they know about the situation is a good way to start this difficult conversation. Begin with the things they know and then clear up any misconceptions.
